Bike parking — followed by outdoor dining — generates the most revenue for local businesses, nearly double the amount generated from on-street private car storage 👏

We need to inform local businesses of these facts, but also need SFMTA to make quick decisions based off of them.

The fact that there’s no public bathroom in or nearby Patricia’s Green is a policy failure.

San Francisco needs more public bathrooms — and benches — especially in and nearby our parks.

We need a mayor who prioritizes these common sense improvements to our city’s public spaces.

Protected bike lanes, transit-only lanes, and car-free streets help people shift trips away from cars, reducing car traffic and demand for parking, among other benefits (e.g. roadway safety, climate action).

We need leaders who prioritize data-proven solutions to these problems.

Today I learned that San Francisco’s Vision Zero goal was for zero roadway fatalities and severe injuries by January 1, 2024.

Mayor Breed and the city have utterly failed to transform our streets and help people shift trips away from cars. We’re seeing the results of inaction.

BREAKING: San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors just approved a resolution urging SFMTA to implement a citywide No Turn On Red (NTOR) policy.

NTOR increases safety for people crossing the street, especially children, seniors, and people with disabilities.

A car driver who purposefully drove 80+ mph on a street with a speed limit of 25 mph and killed a man walking in the crosswalk got the following, unacceptable sentence:

1️⃣ A few months in jail
2️⃣ Diversion program
3️⃣ $58,000 in restitution

And the street still isn’t redesigned.

Rather than significantly increase the cost to store one’s private property — a car — on public property, SFMTA is proposing to significantly increase the cost to take public transportation, which disproportionately hurts low-income individuals and families.

This is disgraceful.

Oh well for SFFD using the Valencia Street center bikeway for emergencies only 😔

This also shows one of the many flaws of the center bikeway — when a car or truck drives in the center bikeway, people on bikes need to exit the bikeway and into the path of others cars and trucks.

San Francisco should convert all slip lanes into public plazas with planters, trees, seating, tables, and murals.

Doing this would instantly make streets safer and increase public space for people to gather, connect, and build community.

Slip lanes can be opened to people fast!

With the recent weak sentencings for car drivers who killed people with their cars, it seems like a great time to share this regular thought of mine:

If someone wanted to stop my advocacy, they could just hit and kill me — someone who primarily walks and bikes — with their car.

Shockingly and terrifyingly easy to kill with a car:

1️⃣ Hit someone with your car
2️⃣ Stay at the scene
3️⃣ Say you didn’t see the person or someone honked at you
4️⃣ Go home and sleep in your own bed
5️⃣ Get off with little to no punishment (and get to keep your drivers license!!!)

Boston City Council has declared roadway safety a public health emergency and called for infrastructure improvements to address the issue 👏

San Francisco should do the same now.

Who will lead on this issue? Will any of the mayoral candidates lead on this issue for our city? 🧐

Allowing turns on red increases conflicts, crashes, and injuries/fatalities for all people — especially people walking and biking — and makes it more dangerous and uncomfortable to cross the street.

“Through incentives and better street design, [San Francisco] can [become the bike-commuting capital of the country].”

“How can San Francisco […] become a more e-bike-friendly city? E-bike share, purchase subsidies and [a connected network of protected bike lanes].”

Yes, this!

LukeBornheimer,
@LukeBornheimer@sfba.social avatar

We do not talk nearly enough about:

1️⃣ How many trips are less than five miles (or less!)

2️⃣ How expensive cars cost to own and use

3️⃣ How relatively affordable e-bikes are compared to cars — you can buy a top-end family e-cargo bike every year for less than the cost of a car!

The current mayor of San Francisco is driven 1 mile downhill in a 3-ton, 7-passenger, $100,000+ SUV during a roadway safety crisis and climate crisis.

We need a mayor who leads by walking, biking, or taking public transit.

Will the next mayor walk, bike, or take public transit?

LukeBornheimer,
@LukeBornheimer@sfba.social avatar

The most-common retort I hear from people who defend/justify Mayor Breed’s actions is that this is for her safety.

Boston’s Mayor Michelle Wu — an Asian woman in a city historically known for racism, and who has received countless death threats — walks, bikes, and takes transit.

SFMTA is planning to expand No Turn On Red downtown (great!), but continues to obstruct No Turn On Red citywide (bad!) — SFMTA’s “plan” is too slow/bureaucratic.

Great to see SFMTA’s data on the safety benefits of No Turn On Red cited — alongside SFMTA noting NTOR as a “tried and proven [safety] method” — but frustrating that SFMTA continues to obstruct a citywide plan for no good reason.

A week after a family of four was killed by a person crashing their car into a bus stop, another person crashed their car into a bus stop.

Mayor Breed must take immediate action to transform our streets — using physical infrastructure — to help more people shift trips away from cars.

If you’re thinking, “Geez, it seems like there are car crashes happening all over the city in seemingly random places,” it’s because our streets are dangerously designed and Mayor Breed has deprioritized or obstructed the necessary work to help people shift trips away from cars.

Bike Bus helps children/families switch trips from cars to bikes — a huge deal (which also reduces car traffic, noise, and air pollution)!

Bike Bus is in The @washingtonpost 👏

Bike Bus’s positive benefits — environmental, social, health, transportation — are critically needed, and government should do more to enable Bike Bus, including through funding and the installation of protected bike lanes and modal filters.

LukeBornheimer,

The rate of adults driving their children to school has skyrocketed over the past 50 years, which has been devastating for people, cities, and the environment.

Bike Bus will help to reverse this trend, but we need connected networks of protected of bike lanes plus modal filters.
