Ask Slashdot: Should Libraries Eliminate Fines for Overdue Books?

Slightly off topic, libraries in Tennessee have a sure fire way to collect their fines... The law allows them to file 'Theft By Deception' criminal charges in the General Sessions court, and many do. Leads to arrests, criminal record and additional legal fees and fines.

The Louisville Free Public Library system did away with fines because of the COVID lockdown. They decided not to reinstate them for the same reasons in the article. It's not a bad idea, as long as you turn the materials in. You get roughly 6 weeks before they charge the unreturned items to your account, and you can't check anything else out until your balance is paid or the items are returned.

Made a discovery

For the last week or so, we've been getting dive-bombed by a little bird every time we open the front door. No idea where it was coming from until just now. That brave, bold, little dummy has built a tiny nest in the top of the floral wreath hanging on our door. I'm going to get the step-ladder out later and take a good look at it/get a picture. If there are any eggs, I'm going to check with the local wildlife agency about relocating it.

@Mrfunkedude I called in to work so I could stay home & keep an eye on Mom. She isn't feeling well. There's a million things around the house that I could be doing, but I can't decide where to start. So I'm in the chair, with the cat on my lap, surfing Mastodon. It's all my brain can handle right now.
