I have been made aware that old mate fuckface is having opinions about housing and, having made the bad decision to subject myself to 6 minutes of the 15 minute video he's made about it, I am understanding why someone would want to firebomb his house.

You don't wish harm on people, but if he did happen to get pushed under a truck I would struggle to be sad about it.

The only agreeable bit I saw was his sledging Deloitte Access Economics.

Which is something, I think, we can all get behind.

This week is a cluster-fuck of computer touching so I am taking an afternoon tea break to plan a bushwalk on the weekend. Reject modernity, embrace trees and rocks.

I showed this to the dayjob's IT team (both of whom'st are women - one muslim, the other buddhist).

There was broad agreement with the sentiment.

Although, weirdly for IT people, they are not terminally online, so I had to explain the concept of a "computer man" to them beyond the immediate defintion provided by the words used.

@decryption I think one contributing factor is that they're quite a bit younger (earlyish 20s) than you (I assume) and I (very late 30s) so the relationship with computers is different.

Like, I distinctly remember when our family got our first PC and how that was amazing and changed a lot of things, then when we (finally) got the internet and what that was like and then when the internet became pervasive and just part of life.

Having a computer and being on the internet was a Thing. You stood out for doing it.

They basically grew up with the latter. Having a computer and being online is just...normal. They don't have their identity entwined in it because it was never something that people ascribed to them as part of their identity.

@decryption And this itself is largely the fault of white computer men.

"AI algorithms can impartially assign work orders based on objective criteria like performance ratings and cost, avoiding personal biases and undisclosed agreements."

  1. If it's an algorithm, it isn't intelligent. So the first two words are already a contradiction.

  2. The rest of it is a lie.

    Many people have said Australia’s defamation laws are bad. That they need to be looked at and relegislated. That they provide protection for the powerful and little else.

    These people certainly have a point.

    However,

    If the current laws are, as it would seem, little more than an incentive for Australia’s Most Astonishing Deadshits to completely and utterly inflict a massive self-own to be enshrined on the public record for all time….is that a bad thing?

    Is this going to set my house on fire if I put it in my smoke alarm?

    MattHatton,
    @MattHatton@aus.social avatar

    @jpm I think the more important consideration is "if this does set fire to my house, will the smoke alarm let me know?"

    Giving a cop your unlocked phone is an insanely terrible idea. https://aus.social/@perkinsy/112271834627847339

    MattHatton,
    @MattHatton@aus.social avatar

    @jpm Right? I don't understand why the general commentary from tech people isn't this.

    Digital licences are great, but encouraging people to unlock their phone in the presents of ACABs is asking for trouble.

    @jpm Yeah, at a previous job, they did that to just about every wall in there.

    It was amazing - just being able to write whereever you fancied.

    But, yeah, the immediate week after was deeply unpleasant.
