I’ve been working on a song in C minor - what the hell was I thinking? Three flats and no open strings for . I was studying B Dorian - that’s the Wicked Game key - but then went up a half step and played Ab / Cm as an opening chord and it sounded so cool. The other chords flowed from there - flats and all, and in between the usual fret markers. But you gotta dance with the one that brung ya. It’s going to be a cool track.

@hilljam @shannoncurtis Top shelf SNL skit. Way back in the 90s I called a DJ and played a snip of this skit I had recorded on videotape. Yeah, videotape. I picked a name by random from the Yellow Pages under the Wedding DJ section. Yeah, the Yellow Pages. It was early days for the internet and Shazam was just a comic book character, not the audio genie app we know today. What song is this? I asked the DJ. Without hesitating he answered “What is Love”, Haddaway.

Cusack Music Project 34 Selenium pre/drive.
It's kind-of like a klon: vol, tone, gain, can boost and/or add dirt.
Has a switch to add bass.
I'd say it's more creamy than fizzy in character.
I don't know where to put it yet... which pedal to take off the board, where to put it in the chain.

@eyesquash Was this the pedal possibly to collect but not use because of its rarity? If so, kudos for plugging it in and making noise with it. 👍🤘🎸

Chord chart for new track ‘1986’.
Inspired by the All In setting on my UA 1176 compressor, this riff has full chord strumming that needs a thinner pick. This might be the track that requires me to mic the Half Pint. As good as my other amp is into my audio interface, the Half Pint sounds better, even recorded on my iPhone.

I got my old acoustic professionally set up in the fall and now that it's spring it's time to do it again myself. Action and neck relief seem fine but I have a little buzz on the D and G strings from frets 3-7. I haven't measured the relief but when I test it it clears the frets with a small gap, so it's not bad. I'm trying to figure out what to adjust. Does that sound like a neck relief issue, an action issue, or a fret issue? Or an "acoustics can have a little buzz as a treat" issue.

Ok, I am a humbucker guy now. Thanks to your advice about modern tremolo (vibrato) systems I bought the G&L Doheny HH on sale, in old school tobacco sunburst. Wasn’t expecting to get humbuckers at all and was looking at the G&L Doheny with jazzmaster style pickups - but this guitar jumped out at me on Reverb, the color first, the rosewood fretboard, the trem system which was my original motivation, and then … the pickups! Bonus: the body is pine!

I’ve reduced my pedals to three going into the Milkman. From right to left is the the mini looper (just for its tuner), the Deco and then the OBNE Sunlight. The Deco continues to provide great tones and versatility, although I need to balance it carefully with the Sunlight, because that pedal is not subtle. Also had my Jazzmaster set up by a local luthier recently which included lowering the bridge pickup. Getting closer to the tones I want to hear but it’s a continual process.

Question for the and players: if you couldn’t rely on your fretting hand for vibrato, what guitar and vibrato bridge system would you choose so you could get that expression with a bar? I’d like to play more lead lines in my compositions but fretting hand vibrato and note bending is a path to injury for me. So I’m looking at guitars with effective vibrato bridges and the G & L Dual Fulcrum Vibrato on most of their models looks like a good place to start. 1/

Clean and restring for the Doheny today. Four months on this set - it might have lasted longer but the axe was getting dirty and fretboard needed some juice. How long do strings last for you, ?

Ok I have to ask: what’s the deal with Orange amps? I see them frequently online in guitar and gear Facebook groups and other forums. People seem to love them. I’ve never tried one though so I’m just curious.

NigelTufnel,
@NigelTufnel@guitar.rodeo avatar

@Theblueone @RuVerb @Cyrus @eyesquash I tried a 30watt head / cab combo at a California guitar store back in March. Looked great. Played just clean tones and it was fine. I prefer a Fender style 6V6 to the Marshall style EL34 circuit so take that for what it’s worth. I can’t see myself buying an amp with EL34s.

Competitive treadmill, where the daily word is disasters, natural and man-made, people f*cking up and lying, and now, sports and weather.

Where a few excel and are awarded comfort, most don't, and then we all die, having made things just a little bit worse. Most don't know or don't care.

Any escape would be welcome.
And the company of like minds.

Here's some dogwood.

@eyesquash Subdivisions popped into my head when I read this lament although it doesn’t quite fit the sense of injustice, ignorance and greed you’ve expressed here. But these lines are close: “Any escape might to help smooth the unattractive truth…” and “some will sell their dreams for small desires or lose the race to rats. Get caught in ticking traps. And start to dream of somewhere to relax their restless flight.” Peace to you today.

Strymon Deco update: the tones are so good that I’ve made the leap into recording with GarageBand, building song ideas that had previously existed only in my voice memo app or pedal loopers. In a past life I was an architectural photographer and this moment with Strymon reminds me of the first Zeiss prime lens I bought: so clear and inspiring that I was ruined for regular glass.

Firebird! More dirt than usual for the rhythm guitars on this track so I hit the challenge of competing frequency airspace when adding a lead overdub. Don’t think I solved it but it’s time to move on. I also wanted a bass-drums single chord groove somewhere in this track, hence the change near the end. The outro solo was one take with 3 pedals (distortion, phaser and tape flanger) maxed for bombast.

Ok, I’ve finished my Ab / C minor instrumental and posted to Bandcamp. It really feels like Eb major to me now. There is one open string in the key, I discovered, and worked that in. Otherwise Strymon Volante again for the guitar tracks with the bass, drums and piano tracks done in GarageBand. This was loads of fun to create and a wonderful escape.

Recording some tracks for my “cover” of Breathe by Pink Floyd. Serious question, tho: if I am brave enough to begin posting my work, where can I post covers without enraging copyright lawyers somewhere? Bandcamp seems right for me but they are explicit about owning uploaded content.

Got my pedals back on the floor. Learning how to cleanly start/stop loops while counting and playing. Trying out Pink Floyd’s Breathe, including the slide parts. Bloody difficult but loads of fun when I get it right.

Learning ‘Tea In The Sahara’ by the Police. I’d like to develop a cover version. It’s deceptively simple and I can’t put the melody in a scale that fits the chords. Anyone? Bueller?
