If anyone has a few million$$ hanging around, you could make a brief splash by starting "Bandcamp for Generative AI"

Set up a service that lets artists form collectives that can train a model together and also includes a marketplace that allows users to prompt these models in exchange for a fee that goes to the artists who trained it.

Ideally, the actual GPUs that your GANs are running on are being powered by solar or wind only.

Provide several disbursement models for the "collectives" like "artists are compensated according to their contribution of training material" or "artists are compensated even-split across the collective" etc.

Save the training data, or hash it, so that you can use it to investigate claims from other artists if they recognize their influence in the output of a model, to discourage theft.

When you build this platform, it will be bad and people will not like it. You probably won't make money because of the cost of IP enforcement, conflict mediation, green energy infrastructure for the service core, etc.

But that's what you will have to do to make the use of generative AI feel acceptable in my mind.

I'm listening to a podcast where they're talking about childhood experiences with videogames and it compelled me to share my favorite videogame memories as a kid:

  1. Staying up past bedtime taking turns playing Super Mario 3 on the NES with my dad and my little brother

  2. One of the highlights of my young life: catching my mom playing PilotWings64 by herself in the living room

I finally updated Ultimaker Cura a couple of weeks ago and I have lived for too long without tree supports!

how are folks feeling about the use of ? when is it ok to use? when is it not? what are some examples you've seen of the wrong call being made? would love to get a ton of folks' opinions so please for reach! ✨💗✨

North,
@North@chaos.social avatar

@ishotjr I think the technology is fine, but there are no ethical generative AI services currently available.

The only ethical model I can imagine is if a model were trained by an artist collective and then the output was sold by those artists or the model was licensed by those artists.

That said, this conversation is a rare privilege. We've already been saddled with a lot of practically unavoidable unethical infrastructure and everyone has to draw their own line on what's acceptable.

@MLE_online that sounds nice, actually

Today I saw a guy reuse an amazon bubble shipping envelope to insulate his water bottle. He rolled it around the outside of the bottle and secured it with a pair of rubber bands.

I really like that creative reuse. It's very clever.

extremely niche rec, but i'm having such a good time working with sunfiretesting.com for tangara's EMC work. great mob, hugely recommended.

North,
@North@chaos.social avatar

@jacqueline I talked with Tim and got a quote from them during my shopping process and I would probably go with them for my next project that requires testing and certification.

On the other hand, I might just never do another project that requires testing and certification, lol

I know 60 down and 20 up sounds wildly slow to everyone outside the US, but frankly I'm just shocked that I can do that on DSL over POTS wiring that hasn't been updated in 30+ years. Two 30AWG copper wires are streaming HD hentai into my house? Seems pretty futuristic to me.

North,
@North@chaos.social avatar

@bobmcwhirter I'm just a little too far outside the city limits. Pizza delivers here, but broadband does not. The only other options I have are satellite and 5g. I'm somewhat tempted by Verizon's home 5g service, but Brightspeed has been cheap and reliable, so I'm hesitant to shake things up for a radio based provider.

North,
@North@chaos.social avatar

@bobmcwhirter Yeah, they changed it last year I think? Maybe the year before? It was CenturyLink when I got it

North,
@North@chaos.social avatar

@koppanyh It's shocking. I wouldn't believe it if I didn't personally wire the phone jack that the modem is plugged into. Apparently, while everyone was moving on to cable and fiber, they've been working on DSL like it's a cure for cancer.

New vacuum system controller is finally assembled. This time, I went two layers of PCBs and used 3D printed masks to isolate the LEDs. What a glow up.

North,
@North@chaos.social avatar

@JamesAkers No problem! I've been playing with making vacuum tubes, so my vacuum system is for getting the experimental tubes down to operating pressure (around 10^-5 mbar)

You can check out my videos about it if you're interested, I see you work with neon, very cool!

North,
@North@chaos.social avatar

@JamesAkers Ooh, thanks for the resources!

I'm working on a new video now about the updates I've made to the vacuum system since I last made a video about it. I've learned a lot just trying to use it. Also, I should have a video out before too long talking about the oxygen concentrator build.

I'll let you know what I find out about nitrocellulose. In the meantime, I've been experimenting with sodium silicate as a binder. No success yet, but I hear rumors it was done in industry in the past.
