OfficerBribe,

Looks nicer, but the problem is that this is not the default experience.

OfficerBribe,

I remember telling someone to go kill themselves was a generic insult in school. Same as “fuck off”.

Just to add, consumer outlook / live / hotmail also benefits from this since it is also using Exchange in backend.

Additionally EWS is atually deprecated and planned to be closed on 2026 October for at least commercial Exchange Online (M365 / Cloud) customers (unclear from that article if free Outlook accounts also will be affected) although as with all MS announcements it will probably be prolonged. Microsoft Graph API is the new hot thing, but it seems some EWS features are not yet available in Graph API based on comments.

Another thing that in a proper company setting that uses Exchange Online you must approve applications before they can be used to access data (Not just Exchange data, this is Entra ID formerly Azure AD feature) for both EWS (in the past it was different, but now Oauth must be used which requires approval) and Graph API so company administrator will have to approve Thunderbird which many will not allow.

OfficerBribe,

If it is due to policy, Edge should show expected setting greyed out and display message along the lines “your organization is managing this setting”.

This sounds like some niche bug.

OfficerBribe,

Bangs is a cool DDG feature that redirects your query to another search engine in this case !g is Google

OfficerBribe,

Nonsense, Edge is a top tier Chromium browser. Vivaldi is another good Chromium option although I no longer use it. Chrome while a decent browser however is irrelevant in my eyes on any W10/W11 since Edge is part of OS.

Every day I use both Edge (only at work) and Firefox (home and work), both have pros and cons. I tried to switch from Firefox to Vivaldi less than 1 year ago, but there are some thing in Chromium based browsers that I did not like when compared to Firefox. Bookmark management was a big one (no tags).

OfficerBribe,

Exactly. Those OS updates are most likely fixing / reinstalling Edge since it is either considered corrupted or to push newer version. Set different default browser, unpin it from taskbar and you are good to go.

All these “fixes” and “debloaters” in a long run most likely will cause problems.

OfficerBribe,

I have just added all the other engines I use in browser itself. Kind of even forgot about bangs.

OfficerBribe,

There is no modification, it just redirects you to the site

OfficerBribe,

There is no modification, it’s just a handy shortcut, read about bangs here. You are not expected to use !g for all searches, only for those that you wish to search with Google. It’s also possible to replicate this with browser search settings, DDG just has this built-in.

OfficerBribe,

Is reddit really considered social media now? I always have described it as the biggest forum and site aggregator on internet.

I know at some point avatars and some crypto? BS came, but that did not change site fundamentals, reddit to me still feels like the same site I joined 10 years ago especially because I used same reddit client for majority of those 10 years. Only reason why I abandoned it is the closure of free API. That and the fact I dislike management, but if 3rd party clients would not have been nuked like that, I would have probably stayed.

Now I am using same client I used for reddit - Sync, so from UI perspective nothing has changed.

Cops Used DNA to Predict a Suspect’s Face—and Tried to Run Facial Recognition on It (www.wired.com)

For facial recognition experts and privacy advocates, the East Bay detective’s request, while dystopian, was also entirely predictable. It emphasizes the ways that, without oversight, law enforcement is able to mix and match technologies in unintended ways, using untested algorithms to single out suspects based on unknowable...

OfficerBribe,

I am on the same boat. Somewhat similar thing was already done by those forensic sketch people that drew how a person might look like after x years if they had earlier photo. It’s not like those sketches meant they are irrefutable proof, just a method to potentially find what you are looking for and then investigate further.

That said, this feels like grasping at straws. I cannot fathom how with only DNA sample you could get an accurate portrait that face recognition could then match.

Battery cost is a big problem, it amounts to around 20% of total vehicle cost. If you would buy a used car, you probably will need to replace it sometime soon. Battery currentlly costs more than a lot of people spend for their whole used ICE car.

OfficerBribe,

It is great that if someone now buys a new car, they chose EV or hybrid, but this change will definitely hurt those who prefer or can afford only cheap used cars.

Quite a problem in near future. Probably only breakthrough in battery tech (new type, re-use possibilities) will solve this and drive cost down for vehicles.

OfficerBribe,

Assuming current universe rules apply here is my order of preference. First 2 seem useful, do not see much practical use for other 2.

  • Speed - Assumption is that my brain / eyes can comprehend the increased speed, otherwise this is a useless power. Primary use wouldn’t even be running although you could become a top marathon runner. You can do chores and learn much faster essentially allowing you to become better than everyone else and in a sense prolonging your life because you could experience all the same things faster than everyone else.
  • Invisibility - You can do fun stuff. Seems like all of it would be unethical or illegal though, cannot imagine a use case that is not questionable besides hiding from someone you do not wish to meet.
  • Telekinesis - You can also do fun stuff, but I have never thought I need to move something without touching it or wish I could move something really heavy. Good pickpocket and powerlifter skill.
  • Flight - Almost useless in my opinion. It is a high profile power so you would probably get kidnapped and experimented on by someone quite quickly unless you just use this to hover in your room which admittedly would be cool.
OfficerBribe,

Good point. I definitely wouldn’t plan to go as fast as sound, but human body probably would not like even 3x speed increase for a prolonged time. Let’s bend rules a bit and say your body could endure all that and you would not get bone, muscle, skin (blisters) problems. Your organs also would need to adapt, otherwise every time you start/stop moving at insane speed, it would be as if you would be in a car crash.

To not give too much advantage, your food consumption would have to increase to sustain all the energy needs, did not think about that as well.

OfficerBribe,

It’s the other way around. DNS based filters are more efficient since connection attempt is simply dropped, but browser based adblocks are a lot more feature rich allowing blocking specific HTML elements not just domains. Additional CPU power to have such extension is miniscule compared to what you gain.

OfficerBribe,

Same here, but I have disabled it for Firefox and let uBlock handle browser. Some sites detected and disliked DNS level blocking.

OfficerBribe,

It’s a cool video, but I wouldn’t call it a parody

Tested 5 clients on my PC 3 times each. Times were more or less consistent on each run, biggest variation seemed for Uplay.

Setup: You are already logged in, there are no pending updates, you terminate client after each run (did not see significant time difference between repeated runs and 1st run after you log in), your logged in Windows account has admin rights so time is not wasted entering password (EGS and Uplay require admin rights to launch), time stops once launcher is usable.

  • EGS - 8 - 10 seconds
  • Steam - 20 seconds
  • GOG - 11 seconds
  • Uplay - 20 - 24 seconds
  • Heroic - 5 seconds

System: Ryzen 2600 with Samsung 970 EVO (2400 MB/s R/W as per Samsung Magician benchmark)

OfficerBribe,

Takes 5 seconds. I was signed in to my EGS account.

OfficerBribe,

Would be fun to investigate why there is such a huge delay and what is causing it.

CNN might be the only site I’ve seen that actually checks if you have made a cookie choice then. The whole cookie acceptance thing is dumb, but they are following the law.

Thankfully there is a plan that EU will make changes fo current policy so those popups might go away.
