In my latest piece I breakdown how @openAI out-hustled Google and what it announced at I/O. In doing so, it showed the contrasting approaches to the AI race & Google’s challenges. https://buff.ly/4blC7LQ

AT&T isn't the first. And not the last. Ever wonder why companies don't give two damns about doing a good job of protecting our data and privacy? Here is a hint -- it doesn't cost them anything even if average citizens find their lives turned upside down. https://om.co/2024/03/31/why-corporations-fail-to-protect-our-data/

With @eu going after US Big Tech, the real question is can/will they go after China Inc. I mean, some of them are just doing "funky" things. New Post. https://om.co/2024/03/25/can-eu-be-tough-on-china-inc/

When traveling, I have to admit, I missed the Vision Pro sorely. I am so glad to be back watching movies, television and sports on what is such a killer media consumption device! https://om.co/2024/02/19/reunited-with-vision-pro/

I jokingly call Vision Pro Apple’s face computer, but for me, this is the future of television and how we will consume media. When I look at Vision Pro, I see, for now, a $4,000-reference home theater system. https://om.co/2024/01/19/a-new-vision-pro-day/

Wired was launched on Jan 2/93! 30 years later, this bible of optimism and tech futurism has lost its religion, much like most of the media. It's sad because optimism is what we need to look beyond the present & solve the problems of tomorrow. Some thoughts

Some important technology themes emerged this year. I wrote about them last year on my blog. I explored AI's rise, super-automation, & the slow arrival of self-driving vehicles. Less posts but more depth. Brace yourself for an exciting 2024. https://om.co/2023/12/31/goodbye-2023-hello-2024/

120th anniversary of the Wright brothers’ first flight serves as a good reminder to reflect on the long arc of technology and its impact. By drawing inspiration from Isaac Asimov, I delve into the power of envisioning the future, beginning with the futuristic visions of French artists at the turn of the 20th century. Our collective history of progress and innovation as a species provides a solid foundation for optimism about the future. https://om.co/2023/12/17/what-do-french-artists-wright-brothers-ai-have-in-common/

Thinking about the upsides of the OpenAI drama:

  1. A new Bollywood movie idea.
  2. I haven't had time to dwell on the Indian Cricket Team's loss in the World Cup.
  3. Satya didn't get a chance to witness that tame finish to our great run.
  4. I'm not entirely wallowing in the misery of missing DogSon, Mr. Gibbs.
  5. Most importantly, it's a chance to remind people that banking on a single vendor without building resilience into your strategy is a recipe for failure.

The shake-up at OpenAI has exposed a massive & obvious foundational risk in placing all bets on a single entity. Everyone should take note, focusing more on this than on the comings & goings at — no matter how important these might be to the company. https://om.co/2023/11/18/foundational-risks-of-openai/

This sort of hyperbole furthers the notion that Nvidia : today :: Cisco : dot-com rush.

Onmyom,
@Onmyom@mstdn.social avatar

@gruber he is not wrong / internet for most was web. So what is talking about is the next phase of how we deal with tech. I see the 10x change. Also Cisco in 2000: 19b in revenues 2023:58 b. Still powers our internet

Onmyom,
@Onmyom@mstdn.social avatar

@davew @gruber that is 100% accurate. Event today none of this GI goes anywhere without the foundation of the open internet and the web. sadly, we are going to lose it all very soon. And then it will be more Meta-styled shit all the time
