There's an awful lot of really shitty news out there at the moment, it's really hard to find the sparks of joy.

And that made me realise that the last time I felt like this was probably late 2019, hearing about a novel virus circulating in a foreign country, with the WHO starting to raise the alarm on how serious it might be.

Bugger.

Surely history isn't meant to repeat this rapidly??

@dave again - I think you're overly optimistic.

Current lot came to power riding on the backlash against the COVID restrictions.

There's no way some parts of the coalition would ever be able to support ANY form of societal response to contagious viruses, because of their cooker support base. 🤷‍♂️

Mrs T went to get some RATs from the pharmacy, and they refused, saying they are now only available to people who are symptomatic, based on new guidelines with immediate effect.

First I've heard of this. Did I miss some news? Does everyone else know this already?

@trendless N95 head straps for me, 99.5% of the time. Except for the VERY occasional time when I run out of the house late and flustered and forgot to bring a mask. Like today.

Where I resort to the (nicely flat packed) emergency pack of KN94 ear looped masks I carry in my laptop bag (and another in car glove box, and another in desk drawer in the office).

    @dave @sidawson as irrational as it is, I'm hoping for massive societal reform. Post the 1918 flu (and the World Wars, to be fair), we had a massive left shift, unionisation, and the creation of (Western) socialised health care.

    As some of you may know, I wrote a "leaving home/turning 18" book for my daughter, and recently repeated for my son.

    5 years ago, I had friends openly tell me to my face that I was wasting my time. All this stuff was on the internet. If they want to know anything they'll just be looking it up online.

    My thoughts were to protect against a Carrington level event, or energy crisis.

    It didn't cross my mind that a rise of LLMs would make all knowledge online entirely unreliable.

    But here we are.

    Oh, I see the government of Aotearoa has made the BBC World News chyron for a third day running - first the smoking ban overturn, then the COP28 Fossil award for over turning the environmental protections, and today for "protests across New Zealand against the government's anti Māori policies".

    What would be really handy is a generic ticket app, that can download and display digital tickets for events, travel services etc. Regardless of what they're for, or how they were booked.

    I know nothing about hardware. I'm a software guy. People come to me asking if this laptop or that tablet is a good deal, or even suitable for their needs. I honestly have no idea.

    At home, I am using an old (2015) W10 Toshiba laptop, where the keys are starting to fail (several entirely non functional).

    I've been hanging out for tech deal day to replace.

    I use it almost exclusively for writing #WordPress code, in XAMPP64 & some Gimp/2000s era 3D modelling.

    So, that said, I'm currently looking at

    A Lenovo 15.6", AMD 7 5700U, 16Gb RAM, 512Gb SSD, 42Wh for $998.

    But I've got a decent discount with MS for a Surface Laptop 5, 13 5" 12 gen i5, 8Gb RAM, 256Gb SSD for $1,799.

    To me, the Lenovo is a clear winner.

    Am I missing something obvious?

    Doing #research for a book led me to #divorce rate #statistics in #Aotearoa NZ.

    Turns out there's a MASSIVE spike in divorces in 1981 & 1982.

    Like, 1980:9%, 1981:11.9%, 1982:17.1%(!!), 1983:13.3% - and then it stabilises back out at about 11% for the next 30 odd years.

    Anyone know what might be the cause of that?

    Incidentally, there's also a precipitous plummit in marriages after 1971. Any known reasons for that?

    This morning was a very obvious demonstration of Kiwis rejection of Mastodon to me.

    I checked my feed with about 5 mins of this morning's rugby game left. Twitter would've been alight with every person's views on the play so far, their predictions for the result, and a smattering of "IDGAF about sport, please everyone shut up". There was nothing here. It took me a further 3 hours to see anyone mention who had actually won.

    Maybe it's a symptom of my echo chamber? But it was screamingly obvious
