PonyOfWar,

Like the article states: it contains an NPU. It’s also not targeted at consumers.

PonyOfWar, (edited )

I suppose a better way to phrase it is- why is an NPU necessary? What does it enable these machines to do that a Surface sans NPU can’t?

It can basically handle neural network/AI tasks more efficiently than a regular CPU/GPU can.

And yes, these are business-oriented. But my question remains the same - is built-in AI a feature that businesses, as consumers of this product, are asking for?

Yes, deserved or not, AI is currently on everyone’s mind in the business world. Working as a software dev, every client these days asks if we “do AI”, so we pretty much have to reluctantly learn and use it. And many of those clients are very protective of their data and don’t just want to put them on some web service, like OpenAI. So there’s certainly demand for locally running AI tasks.

What do YouTube tech reviewers do with all the tech?

As asked in the title. Anyone have insider information? Speculations are welcomed. It just seems such an e-waste, but at the same time some reviewing more well known techs are helpful. But those whose goal is to make their video entertaining rather than informative like going on a tech shopping spree on Amazon or Aliexpress to...

PonyOfWar,

They’ve also auctioned some of it off, including the well-known case where they were not exactly supposed to.

PonyOfWar,

Basically, if PlaytronOS works as promised, then your handheld PC will no longer be restricted to just single store fronts or Windows foibles.

Does the writer here assume that SteamOS is limited to a single storefront? Because that couldn’t be further from the truth. As you can see on Playtron’s website, they use the same launchers that you can already use on SteamOS, like Heroic.

You could easily run your Game Pass catalog on your Steam Deck, for example.

That is highly doubtful. I’d be very impressed if Playtron got Gamepass to work on Linux but let’s be real here, they didn’t.

PonyOfWar,

Unfortunately performance especially on PC looks rough. I am/was pretty excited for the game, but looks like my CPU (3700X) might just not cut it for a good gameplay experience, despite being above the recommended specs.

PonyOfWar, (edited )

7700X is way above the recommended specs and my CPU though. It’s not surprising that it runs fine on a great system, but many of us have more mid-tier systems.

PonyOfWar,

“Smoking” chewing gum cigarettes.

Exploring the internet by going through a physical “100 coolest websites for kids” book.

PonyOfWar,

Looking at France recently, wouldn’t be so sure about that one…

PonyOfWar, (edited )

One of my favorite ways to waste time during my high-school days.

PonyOfWar,

Kirby’s adventure feels really modern for an NES game, still holds up great to this day. The difficulty is also closer to what people are used to nowadays, compared to the punishing difficulty of many NES games. One of the few NES games I played through completely.

PonyOfWar, (edited )

A few smaller ones that pop into my head are Boulder, Amarillo, Centralia (does that still count?), Slab city (not sure that counts either), Salem and Providence. Looking it up, the smallest proper city of these is Salem with 44k.

I could also probably name a ton of European city names and there will be small towns in the USA with that name, but that would kind of be cheating.

PonyOfWar, (edited )

I was thinking of the one with the cracked roads and the fire burning below. So that’s probably the former? Haven’t actually heard of the massacre I think.

PonyOfWar, (edited )

The witchy one! Funnily enough, when I googled it for the population number, I found that there’s also a Salem in my home state of Baden-Württemberg in Germany. I had never heard of that one, despite having been within like 15km of it.

PonyOfWar,

The lemmy devs should really focus on proper content deletion tools. It’s not just the images, it’s very strange and inconsistent overall. When I delete a comment, it’s seemingly still visible to many people and collecting up/downvotes even many hours after I deleted it. On the other hand, when a post gets deleted, it’s completely gone, to the point that I can’t even look up the discussion that I had within that post, just my own comments on my profile.

PonyOfWar,

Every war has human suffering, it’s not sufficient to classify it as a genocide.

Now, when I look at the Iraq war, the goal was to destroy Ba’athist Iraq. By the same definition, wouldn’t that war have been a genocide as well?

The destruction of a particular government does not fall under the definition of genocide, no.

PonyOfWar,

So did the Western allies commit a genocide in WW2? The large number of people being Germans that are nazis? You could classify pretty much any war you want as a genocide that way: French that are Monarchists/Imperialists/Republicans, Americans that are Confederates/Unionists etc. Were all of these just committing genocides against each other? With that definition you’d end up with genocide just being synonymous with “war”.

  • PonyOfWar,

    PonyOfWar,

You seem to confuse the concept of Eugenics (selective breeding to improve “genetic quality”) with the general idea that genetics can influence things like personality, intelligence etc. The latter is pretty much undisputed. But as Humans are seen as individuals with rights, selectively breeding them like you would dogs is seen as unacceptable.

    PonyOfWar, (edited )

Yes, the Human relationship to animals can often be pretty paradoxical. People may love their dog and maybe even look at it as almost an equal, but don’t mind animals with even higher intelligence (pigs) being kept in horrible conditions so they can eat them. Pug owners may think their pet is so cute, but are willing to ignore all the human-caused suffering that pugs have to go through to look like that. Ultimately animals are always treated as less than human, even if people may delude themselves otherwise.

    PonyOfWar,

That’s why I wrote “can influence” and not “is determined by”.

    PonyOfWar,

We selectively breed dogs for traits and do not allow their offspring to procreate. I’m sure there are puppy mills that kill the “undesirables” too.

I never denied that. But in the description they conflated it with just talking about genetics affecting a persons/dogs characteristics. There is a difference between acknowledging that and the act of selective breeding to reach certain characteristics. It’s not eugenics to say “a person may have a genetic tendency towards ‘trait x’”, eugenics would be “let’s selectively breed people to encourage ‘trait x’”.
