I need some new science fiction to read, who has some suggestions? I don't like military sci-fi. For reference, my favorite series is the Expanse, I also enjoyed Scalzi's Collapsing Empire, I love Robert Charles Wilson's books. I mostly enjoy space operas and unique stories about technology, for example I really liked the recent book Mountain in the Sea about AI and intelligent octopus. Suggestions from the awesome Bookstodon community? @bookstodon #Bookstodon #Scifi #ScienceFiction

Have you tried Becky Chambers Wayfarer series, beginning with A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet?
Each following can be read as standalone but some characters recur and best read in order. Outstanding characters and interaction among species, diverse, great dialogue, and action but no big space battles.

If you like Scalzi, for sheer fun and a good plot, written in first person, I highly recommend The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells. She is a brilliant, versatile SFF writer and this series is a joy. Seeing humanity through the eyes of an uncontrolled robot security officer is perfect.
Hope these appeal .😊

Are multiple, terrifying loud flyovers by fighter jets in the early morning really the best way to honour our glorious dead?

Or just a way of honouring the glorious industrial-military complex?

Maybe a mild harmless reminder of the millions who cower in the dark waiting to be destroyed when they hear those sounds in their own skies?

I am proud of our brave service people, but deeply sorry that they are needed.

is one of terribly conflicting emotions for me.

RHW,
@RHW@mastodon.au avatar

@anathema_device I was explaining my own reaction, not the authorities' intention. But I cannot condemn the servicemen for what their superiors decide is suitable for Anzac day to represent the RAAF. But not trying to pick a fight w you at all, we are both on same side.

From Guardian Aus Live

The details of former senior bureaucrat Kathryn Campbell’s last annual pay package have been released.

The Department of Defence’s latest annual report, released Tuesday, shows Campbell was the third-highest paid public servant in the department for her role as senior adviser on the Aukus project.

It shows she received a total of $835,970 for the 2022-23 financial year with a base salary of $698,644.

The package put her just under defence secretary Greg Moriarty and defence force chief Angus Campbell. Curiously, she was paid more than Jonathan Mead, the chief of the nuclear powered submarine taskforce, who she reported to, according to an organisation chart in the department’s budget papers.

Mead received a total package of $707,822 with a base salary of $526,670.

Campbell, who has since resigned from the public service, has been in the spotlight for her role in the robodebt saga.

The former secretary of the social services and human services departments had been suspended without pay three days after the royal commission handed down its report into the illegal debt

I was just about to complain about a business I've requested a quote from in writing trying to call me then sending me both texts and emails. Then I realise they've sent me a fucking Whatsapp message as well!

It is a decent quote but I cannot reward this stalking-adjacent behaviour

@luciedigitalni I suggest it is better than no answers, which really annoys me.

There are too many quotable paras in this excellent article.

Please read it all.

#Labor has been asked, and p
begged to raise #jobseeker to help the worst off out of poverty, ever since its election. It has deliberately chosen not to do so but overspent on items that benefit the wealthy and the warmongers.

I was very upset watching parts of my precious garden die during Canberra's long draught years ago.I cannot imagine the despair and misery these dedicated people feel watching a reef, a forest, a species, a river die after they have tried dedicated their lives to keeping it safe. This article is sad in so many ways.
