One of the local universities advertising "50 and Better" classes including courses/lectures on Frank Sinatra, 1950's swing, and "Over The Rainbow" makes me wonder why they are conflating Gen X folks with the boomers here... ("just over 50" are folks who grew up with U2, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc.) 🤔

Jennifer,
@Jennifer@bookstodon.com avatar

@ai6yr maybe they're confusing people who are 50 with the 1950s 😆

I'm not sure what to think of Biden's new tariffs. I don't like China, but would buy one of their $10k EVs if I could since companies here are trying to rip us off as usual with $40k cars.

Who has watched the Three Body Problem on Netflix? I think I'm going to start it this weekend. I was extremely skeptical about it because of how badly the producers screwed up Game of Thrones, but heard it's good. Probably because they didn't have to write any original content 😂 I tried the Chinese version, and it's great, but I had a really hard time keeping up with the subtitles.

President Joe Biden plans to send an additional $1 billion arms shipment to Israel, despite the U.S. being opposed to a full-scale invasion by the Israeli military on the southern Gaza city of Rafah.

BBC News has the latest: https://flip.it/KZ5Rwb

Do you think the U.S. should halt all weapons shipments to Israel until there's a ceasefire?

Jennifer,
@Jennifer@bookstodon.com avatar

@rjblaskiewicz @NewsDesk yes he can. There are laws saying we can't provide arms to foreign countries that are violating international and humanitarian law, which Israel is clearly doing. Although the administration won't admit it.

  • Context! You must go back… all the way to October 7.

  • Sure, let’s go back: let’s go back 76 years to May 15, 1948, to the ; the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people where 750,000 people were “expelled from their homes or made to flee, at first by Zionist paramilitaries through various violent means, and after the establishment of the State of Israel, by the Israel Defense Forces.” (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nakba)

Idea:

Bookstores should group fantasy with horror instead of scifi. Both fantasy and horror are purely creations of the author's mind; scifi is tethered to factual information.

If you need to group scifi, I'd put it with mysteries and thrillers.

Jennifer,
@Jennifer@bookstodon.com avatar

@Uair @bookstodon I think fantasy and sci-fi should be their own sections in bookstores and not grouped with anything. It annoys me that they're on the same shelves. Sci-fi and fantasy are split up in online bookstores. Mystery and horror also need to stay separate.

@ai6yr two families I know near me in Tennessee moved here from California in the first year of the pandemic, and I know of several more. One ran a freelance business that was decimated by AB5. Another couldn't afford a house so they got a house and a lot of property here. I thought they were nuts to move here, but the woman in the first family revived her business (but now the new DOL rule may kill it again).

Where do you live and how do you feel about it?

Obviously, don't tell me exactly where you live, no actual addresses please! You can be as vague as you like.

I live in Central Missouri in the U.S.

Pros:

This is an absolutely beautiful place, green rolling hills, lots of rivers, lakes, ponds, and natural springs, cool caves to explore.

Lots of farming here, so great access to quality fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy.

It's relatively inexpensive to live here compared with other states, because it's a "flyover".

I'm close enough to three major cities, that it's an easy day trip, and I'm about halfway to anywhere in the U.S.

We have one of the best Conservation departments in the U.S. and this is one of the few things that is a bipartisan issue. Lots of awesome nature programs that are free or cheap, state parks, conservation areas, bird watching, hunting, boating, foraging available to everyone.

Cons:

Yeah, it's a big one, it is a RED STATE, while a lot of the cities are blue, there is a large rural population, that votes red. Abortion is not legal here. People often vote against their own self interest.

While I'm not against responsible gun ownership, lots of people aren't responsible, and people have access to guns that definitely should not.

We have very few employee protections here, while the cost of living is relatively low compared with other places, it's taken years to get to a $12 minimum wage, and it's still not enough.

Jennifer,
@Jennifer@bookstodon.com avatar

@RickiTarr i live in rural Tennessee and used to love it until a dumbass built a Tyson chicken factory farm on my street. Pros: very pretty scenery, great outdoor activities, convenient to three cities including Nashville, fairly cheap, people are pretty laid back. Cons: Republican dictatorship basically. Abortion is illegal, they are going after books, LGBTQ+ people, banning lab grown meat (gotta protect Tyson!), lots of other crap.

I need some new science fiction to read, who has some suggestions? I don't like military sci-fi. For reference, my favorite series is the Expanse, I also enjoyed Scalzi's Collapsing Empire, I love Robert Charles Wilson's books. I mostly enjoy space operas and unique stories about technology, for example I really liked the recent book Mountain in the Sea about AI and intelligent octopus. Suggestions from the awesome Bookstodon community? @bookstodon
