I'm glad I'm not the only one noticing this kind of thing.

lol... I can't argue with that.

At least is configurable enough to be made pretty decently useful.

Well, I think Snow Leopard was pretty decent ๐Ÿ˜

I could never get into dark mode.
When I was young, "light mode" meant you had a fancy computer (Macintosh, Unix workstation), and "dark mode" meant you had a cheap computer (DOS) ;)

Contrast in text readability has gotten significantly worse with , especially with light text on a light background. Here's a comparison of desktop icons in MacOS 9 vs. macOS Ventura. At least in classic MacOS there is a small box around the icon's name.

macOS Ventura text - the subtle drop shadow minimally aids readability to text that would otherwise be difficult to read.

Nobody remembers why things were done the way they were, so basic UI principles are being changed based on feeble aesthetic whims.

As someone who has used GUIs since 1984, this drives me insane. The only GUIs I use anymore are the ones that let me change the idiotic defaults.

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@krishnadraws

Another silly thing I've noticed a lot lately is that some captions and a lot of video player UI elements are pure white with no black border/outline.

So what happens when the video is very light?

Sheesh.

In the 80s & 90s, all captions and video text had THICK black outlines to ensure readability.

I think modern OSes should bring back monochrome mode, and force devs to make their interfaces work in monochrome.
That will teach them how to make interfaces that are usable.

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@krishnadraws

I think that most devs (and probably even managers) are pretty young, and 1) don't remember how things were done even a decade ago or particularly why, and 2) don't have to deal with aging eyes.

They think vision issues are binary or exponential where in fact they're extremely linear, and it's a multi-decade decline from 20/20 to the kind of impairment that necessitates "high-contrast mode."

Interfaces can be aesthetic and usable and accessible, but they scarcely try. ๐Ÿ˜“

    *The only thing I don't like about i3 is that floating windows always float above tiled windows. It would be nice if they could be brought above and below freely, but they're on a layer that's permanently above anything tiled. Minor niggle, though.

    Ok, 5.27's new tiling mode is kinda swank.

    Nothing revolutionary, they just make it such that if you resize one tiled window, the others adjust to fit within the space given.

    As I said, not spectacular, Pop Shell, , and others have more impressive tiling, but I'm just happy that this much is finally here on KDE. :)

    Also, the new tinting is friggin' NOICE.

    Hey ,

    Is there a simple way (like an environment variable) to tell // commandline applications that I'm running in light mode, so PLEASE do not give me yellow on white text?

    Or do I just need to modify my terminal colors to be darker? (doesn't help with programs that pick specific colors)

    RL_Dane,
    @RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

    @teamtuck

    I guess I'll just play with Konsole's colors to make them a bit darker.
    Kinda strange to me that there's no way to set light/dark mode within the terminal (i.e. for the command line apps, not for the terminal itself)
