Is anyone using the @PINE64 yet?
Is it ready for early adopters, or is it still dev-only status?
It's almost a couple years old now, and I'm not seeing much in the way of status updates AFAICT.
I'm tempted to get a kindle scribe, but dang if I don't want to make Lex Luthor any richer or more powerful. :P

So, correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m going to go out here on a limb and say that it seems to me that the majority of good faith criticism of the vibe on mastodon, calling it “stuffy” and “no fun”, comes from people who joined mastodon.social, after complaining loudly that there was no default instance to quickly onboard people to the new service.

So like, the irony, I guess, is what hit me this morning.

It kind of goes hand in hand with my "The internet was never (meant to be) a free-for-all" pinned toot.

People are (were?) flooding into Mastodon with badly broken ideas of what online communities are and should be.

They were trained by a horrid, abusive algorithmic corporate system, and at the risk of sounding snooty, a LOT of their comments sound like a new employee of a good organization loudly complaining,
"BUT NOBODY PUNCHED ME IN THE FACE TODAY!"

    I still remember my first impressions of it at uni in 2000:

    • Whoa, cool startup screen. No more bizarre 360*200 (or whatever it was) graphics mode that Win 95/8 used
    • IS THAT A SHADOW UNDER THE MOUSE CURSOR??!? mind blown

    eh, I'm not so keen on the pressure valve philosophy.
    I mean, it makes sense in a lot of ways, but in other ways it feels like surrendering to existential entropy, instead of trying to find some way of countering it.

    But of course, I'm totally Don Quixote like that. 😁

    For one thing, I try to find the human(e) in the midst of the soulless machine. To make human connections and see human dignity in the midst of corporate denigration.

    I try to see ways I can help and encourage, rather than flowing with the current of nonchalant despair.

    Because when people are in a landslide of discouragement, you can either be yet another glob of sliding mud, or try to be a tree standing fast that someone can grab on to.
