What is your contingency for when the ISP goes down?

In my ever-ongoing struggle to disentangle myself and my family from our corporate overlords I have gleefully dived into self-hosting and have a little intranet oasis available; media, passwords, backups, files, notes, contacts, calendars – basically everything I needed the Big G suite for at one point, I’m hosting locally,...

They mean using something with a cellular radio. A router, or a tethered cellphone.

RustedSwitch,
@RustedSwitch@lemmy.world avatar

Perhaps there’s a way to do this via hotspot, but I meant tether via physical connection to the router. Some routers do offer failover to secondary networks. Possibly with qos to prevent scarfing, as you put it ;)

I’m not an expert, but aren’t you describing condos? A person owns the interior, and the outside is managed through an owners association.

RustedSwitch,

Condos could be pre-contracted just like any other home. And I believe condo associations are resident owned.

Ultimately though, I think the important bit would be that the finished inventory is only owned by actual residents. Which a condo association would accomplish.

Can you elaborate? Every recently published game I’ve played has had this option.

This image filled a hole in my life I didn’t know I had

No notifications, and a banner popover when you run it, which some people will find annoying

It’s an easy way to get started with your first shortcut though!

Met a nice lady at the grocery store

Today at the grocery store a sweet older lady approached me and asked if I knew anything about computers. I said yes I do, and she produced a mouse saying that her son set up Linux mint for her and she was wondering if the mouse was compatible. It needed kernel version 2.6 or newer so I said that the mouse should work, guessing...

I don’t have any reason to not trust OP, but the likelihood of this conversation happening at ALL seems incredibly unlikely. Never mind that it is described as successful.

If true, this is amazing.

RustedSwitch,
@RustedSwitch@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, I’m not saying it’s impossible, just incredibly unlikely.

The number of people out there that fit the description of your mother is low.

The number of people that could have intelligently answered the question is a bit higher, but still low.

The likelihood of those 2 people meeting in a store not dedicated to computer tech, and having this exact conversation, is like… monkeys playing Mozart level unlikely. ;)

RustedSwitch,
@RustedSwitch@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, I’m content with who I am.

Your assumption regarding my goal is wrong though. I took care to explain my thoughts in a way that didn’t deny the possibility outright. No worries if you missed that, or are skeptical.

I think most can agree (even if you don’t) that the chances of this are just wild. That itself was interesting enough to me that I chose to type out 2 comments. I’m told commenting/contributing is the point of being on lemmy?

Anyway, I don’t know who pissed in your wheaties, but I hope your day improves from here.

I’m not being skeptical!

Summer - cool to 76 around the house. 68 for sleeping.

Winter - warm to 70 around the house. 65 for sleeping, with a heavier comforter.

Is that a savory bread pudding?? I’ve only eaten sweet ones, but I spy green things that I can only guess are pickles??

RustedSwitch,
@RustedSwitch@lemmy.world avatar

The pickle is a lie!

Can you see the thing I’m talking about? Just near the spoon. It’s not just me, right?

RustedSwitch,
@RustedSwitch@lemmy.world avatar

I usually have good luck with serious eats recipes.

The sauce in the spoon looks like a pickled cucumber, including the cucumber peel.

I’m surprised that was enough - don’t underestimate a kids ability to make their own pixie dust out of whatever they have around. Now there’s plant soil and sugar on the floor too.

I’ve been looking forward to buying an EV for like 10 years… I keep waiting for the balance of price and quality to meet come down out of the stratosphere… prices seem to only go up. I want something in the $30k range, and the quality level that $30k got you 10 years ago.

I liked their eye masks so much, I bought the place

I hiked Mt Katahdin last summer, and there was a group of Amish that passed me in slacks and button up shirts.

Neil Young doesn’t want you to remember the Pono either!
