From years of being bored, unsatisfied, or struggling in various jobs and industries, I finally feel like I have come home.

I'm so happy to join an industry with such brilliant, interesting, and gloriously nerdy people - I mean this in the best possible way!

I have attended both Beyond Tellerrand Düsseldorf and CSS Day 2024 and, wow. Huge thank yous to the organisers, speakers, and to the many warm and funny fellow attendees I had the joy to socialise with.

This is my church.

@sarajw @robinwhittleton I did! I love them! Great work!

Omg. @SaraSoueidan's material is dense and fast and great and my brain is busy.

When the video comes out I will certainly share it.

Ohhh it's the week before the conference talk and so the panic attacks are starting.

I'd forgotten about these. 🥲

SaraSoueidan,
@SaraSoueidan@front-end.social avatar

@voxpelli You're too kind my friend. The panic attacks are inevitable. You should see me the hour before I get on stage. Oh boy. 😅 Thankfully it gets muuuch easier once I start speaking. But the time preceding the talk is the absolute worst.

📝 new blog post: "web components" considered harmful

https://www.mayank.co/blog/web-components-considered-harmful

SaraSoueidan,
@SaraSoueidan@front-end.social avatar

@mayank I think I've only ever used "web components" once in writing. I call them custom elements because I'm used to talking about native HTML elements so calling our own "custom elements" is actually more what it is. Templates also describe what the element is. Shadow root too. I've always known web components to be "a collection of APIs". I always thought it was understood that that's what the term represents. 🤷‍♀️

I have a problem.

Too much content for the talk slot. 😅

I'll need to kill some of my darlings. 🥹

Thank you @aardrian for teaching me this phrase and making it a little easier for me to do. I remember when you told me to kill some of my darlings in one of the course chapters. It was soooo hard 😅 but once I did that, it's somehow become easier afterwards knowing that doing it will improve the result.

Best intention barriers (ARIA edition)

🔗 https://marcus.io/blog/best-intention-barriers-aria

"Instead of not being aware about the problematic approach the developer chose, they try to improve accessibility but – unbeknownst to them - create new barriers in the first place doing it." @marcus

SaraSoueidan,
@SaraSoueidan@front-end.social avatar

@siblingpastry @marcus I think it's meant to say that ARIA attributes don't add interactive behavior. 🤔

SaraSoueidan,
@SaraSoueidan@front-end.social avatar

@siblingpastry @marcus Good to know! We need to be more specific now that an exception is there 🤦‍♀️

I get the appeal of email newsletters. I really do.

But nothing gives me as much anxiety as sending out an email and then constantly obsessing about whether I made a typo or messed up a link, because I simply can't just edit it like I can with a post on my blog. 😭

SaraSoueidan,
@SaraSoueidan@front-end.social avatar

@marcus I swear I've been having an anxiety attack for like 20 minutes now. 😭 I just sent out an email update for course newsletter subscribers.

Also, all the auto-responders flooding my inbox. Is there like a secret hack people have to deal with this?!

Friends, what are you using to cross-post your posts across social media platforms?

ppk, to random

I'm in the market for a new CLICKER - my old one, which I bought for SxSW 2007, has finally given up the ghost.

Mac/Keynote. Preferably USB-C.

Any tips? Best/worst?

@pepelsbey @ppk One more vote for the Logitech Spotlight. 👍

I have both the logitech and the kensignton but find myself using the logitech only for years now.

the feeds will never end, it's RSS time!

SaraSoueidan,
@SaraSoueidan@front-end.social avatar

@hi_mayank I love RSS but the Inbox filling up so fast is one of the reasons I avoid opening it when I'm anxious or stressed. It's kinda like email in that sense. I get the sense that there's stuff I'm missing out on and they just keep piling up. I even unsubscribed from feeds that post too frequently (that includes Links feeds from many independent authors, and why I also chose not to post links myself).

Okay, so when making a popover I think the logic should go something like this:

  1. Use title if the content of the popover is just text.

  2. Use the popover attribute if the content is more than plain text and like a menu of options or something.

  3. Use <dialog> if you need to force the user to make a decision or block all other interactions on the page.

https://www.csscade.com/popover-api

SaraSoueidan,
@SaraSoueidan@front-end.social avatar

@csscade Don't use the title attribute. It's not useful for most users and not accessible for many of them. https://www.24a11y.com/2017/the-trials-and-tribulations-of-the-title-attribute/#:~:text=It%20is%20primarily%20displayed%20as,able%20to%20interact%20with%20it.

Using the popover attribute for plain text is good because it provides the interactions needed for all users to toggle and see the text. That's not possible with title.

Asking Mastadon.

Can anyone recommend good online resources to learn ? Really am asking for a friend, they would ideally like something structured like a course.

Thanks!

LOL, the neighbor who mowed his lawn on Thursday afternoon is mowing his lawn again Monday morning.

Unrelated question: What’s a good thing you can send to your neighbor anonymously that will become a quiet inside hobby they can obsess over?

SaraSoueidan,
@SaraSoueidan@front-end.social avatar

@yatil Keeping an eye on this thread because remember when I recorded a short video of my neighbor doing the same? Well now they have construction work happening at their house EVERY SINGLE DAY and it's driving me crazy. Every day at 8 am sharp the banging starts. 😭

Reading the accessibility posts on CSS-tricks feels like torture. It almost physically hurts. 😣

The amount of misinformation being spread is insane. And the worst part is that the blog's previous popularity is helping spread this misinformation. We seriously need an intervention at this point.

SaraSoueidan,
@SaraSoueidan@front-end.social avatar

@OddDev a lot! Especially lots of misinformation in the "top 5 recommendations". Too much to cover in a post. I could write an entire post explaining why the post is wrong. I think @aardrian has covered some of it already
