Yeah, I call bullshit on blaming video games. Plenty of other countries have these same games and no constant shootings.

It's the fucking GUNS. It's how easy they are to get.

SasquatcherGeneral,
@SasquatcherGeneral@idlethumbs.social avatar

@virtualbri I think there’s merit to the suit since it alleges that the games are effectively marketing for the guns. Game companies aren’t blameless for fetishizing weapons, and I’m hoping that it gives more visibility to the suit.

A Very Florida Thing just happened:

I was standing outside when a bug flew right at me and landed in my shirt pocket. I tried to flick it out but it either couldn’t or wouldn’t leave. I ended up having to take my shirt off in a parking lot to flap it out.

Inconsequential thing that bugs me about Star Wars:
In Empire Strikes Back, getting frozen in carbonite was about the most traumatic and melodramatic thing that could possibly happen to a person, and they played it up like it was the end of the world. And then in ROTJ it required a long recovery.

Since then, in the comics and even the Mandalorian, they’ve done it casually to dozens of people, and the effects are no worse than taking a nap.

@SasquatcherGeneral@idlethumbs.social avatar

@ja2ke I don't know if it's worldbuilding as much as "give the people what they want" lack of ambition.it seems like George Lucas's "it rhymes" quote has been interpreted as permission to keep going back to the same well over and over again. And that's how we end up with 3 death stars and 1000 star destroyers (each with a Death Star laser attached because why not?)

A few weeks ago, someone at work was describing the Disney Cruise Line app, and how it gives you a big animated countdown of how many days are left until your cruise. She mentioned how much her daughter likes looking at it every day, and how it’s so much fun for kids.

I laughed nervously and said, “yeah, for kids.” And discreetly closed the app.

@tashasounart It’ll be my first time on the Wish. I liked the Wonder so much last year that I booked another cruise even before we got off the ship. (Before the employee discount, dammit! 😂)

Today just after lunch, a raccoon crawled out from under one of the buildings at work and started following me around, almost like it wanted to be picked up.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a raccoon in the daylight, and I’ve definitely never seen one trying to get near me, instead of staring me down or scampering away. Some passers by asked if it was my pet.

(And I confirmed that it wasn’t an audio animatronic).

tragedy!

After my bad soldering ruined a Pi Zero a few years ago, I resolved last night to get over my yips and try with a new board. I was more careful and better prepared and 3d printed a soldering jig and everything.

And messed it up again. The headers became tilted as I was soldering, and the board powers on but goes into endless reboot if I try to plug in a bonnet. Is there any way to save this one?

@brunoph thanks, thats the (okay, a) part that was confusing me, whether it’s possible to check for individual bad pin connections.

Would I be checking to see if any of the GPIO pins are connected to each other? Or testing each one against somethjng else? I’ve got a multimeter but haven’t yet used it.

Serious question: Why should Trump’s rationalization for absolute immunity apply only to the President? Why is the President uniquely hobbled by the threat of blackmail or prosecution and Congresspeople, doctors, and teachers aren’t?

SasquatcherGeneral,
@SasquatcherGeneral@idlethumbs.social avatar

@kfury I hate dignifying the argument, but I think it’s a specious attempt to equate Trump’s crimes with the kinds of decisions that real chief executives are obliged to make. For instance, prosecuting Obama for authorizing drone strikes.

As I understand it, the idea of immunity is unique to the presidency because it involves national security (unlike doctors, teachers, etc) and it’s in the name of an individual instead of a governing body (unlike Congress).

I can’t stop thinking about an idea I have for a fighting(-adjacent) game on the Playdate.

One of my favorite-but-too-dumb-to-use ideas: one of the fighters is the ghost of Alexander Graham Bell. For his Scorpion-type move, he shouts “Come here, I need you!”

Today I saw another link to my models for the game Godzilla: Tokyo Clash on Etsy. I’d posted them to BGG for free, with a CC license asking that they not be sold.

I can’t be that upset about it, because they’re for an existing game, and not everybody has (or should have!) a 3D printer to print their own. Plus I don’t want to get into the time & expense of printing & shipping them.

But it rubs me the wrong way for reasons I can’t explain.

I’d forgotten that back in 2008, Steve Purcell posted the entirety of his excellent comic “Toybox” on one of his blogs. As much as I love Sam & Max, I feel like Toybox is even more brilliant and unhinged, what you get if you give a disturbingly talented person the mandate “do whatever you want.”

“I hate Puddy the frozen dessert goon. He’s a pompous irritant. I’d like to slap his creamy head.”

For years I’ve been seeing those single-use dental floss picks scattered around parking lots. Are people really into dental hygiene (and littering), or is there some nefarious use I don’t know about?

Ever since I learned that McDonalds stopped using plastic coffee stirrers because people were using them for cocaine, I can never tell if I’m being too naive or too suspicious.

Anyone out there drive an Ioniq 5? I’m looking at it for my next car and need to gather opinions both good and bad. If you have thoughts you wanna share please let me know. Thx!

SasquatcherGeneral,
@SasquatcherGeneral@idlethumbs.social avatar

@gedeonm I’ve been following this thread since the lease for my ID.4 is over in a few months, and I’ve been extremely disappointed in VW’s mismanagement of software.

The Ioniq 5 was my first choice, but wasn’t available when I needed to get a car. For me, the lack of a rear wiper is the only thing that sounds like a must-have. (I’ve never gotten wireless CarPlay to work reliably in any car, for instance, so I prefer wired).

SasquatcherGeneral,
@SasquatcherGeneral@idlethumbs.social avatar

@gedeonm My take, FWIW: the ID.4 makes a great first impression, and I loved it for a year and a half or so, but I’m planning to return it when the lease is up.

VW’s software support is abysmal, OTA updates still haven’t come, known bugs like the screen & speedometer freezing or going black and can’t be rebooted.

Plus dozens of smaller annoyances like the lack of physical buttons, clumsy window controls, bizarrely difficult just to unlock the doors for a passenger.

A surprisingly fun game on the Vision Pro: Jetpack Joyride. I’ve always liked that game, as simple as it is. The Vision Pro version reduces it even more, to where you’re just pinching and releasing and watching stuff explode.

There’s now a “fully immersive” lobby that feels completely superfluous, but it does suggest what you could do with casual full VR games that aren’t going for room scale interaction, but just exploration. Point-and-click games feel like a natural.

ok it has now been about a week and my apple goggles feedback is that there are so many parts of it that are janky but also i am deeply viscerally in love with this device.

it's reached the point where I'm starting to really love the jank because the jank means i get to watch how it comes together over the next couple years. a lot of the jank is in that people just have no idea how to make apps for this thing. it feels like early iphone and im excited to watch people figure this stuff out

@anna @helvetica Butting in with an unsolicited opinion:
The screen mirroring from a Mac is excellent, but I’d still use my 27” monitor most of the time for exactly the reasons you suggest. The biggest limitation IMO is that it can only mirror one screen at a time. Native apps look sharper and you can have more windows open, position them around the space.
For traveling with a laptop, though, it could be very useful as a huge screen.

    Nightshade, the AI data poisoning tool, is now available. Artists and photographers can use this defensive tool to prevent their work from being used without permission for AI training models. It's free and easy to use, and it works well on my original art (see attached).

    Even if you are personally fine with AI companies using your work without permission, we should all be using whatever tools we have until these companies switch to using ethically sourced models.

    @virtualbri To me that doesn’t read as the actor leaving voluntarily. I have absolutely zero info but just reading that makes it sound like “creative differences” or whatever euphemism they use to fire someone.
