Throw_away_migrator,

The race was yesterday. Today was just the parade

Throw_away_migrator,

Expect for the .410 gauge. That one is a caliber, because reasons

Throw_away_migrator,

Rename the Southeast to Sherman? I would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

Throw_away_migrator,

Not sure what it says about me that I immediately knew who she was/is

Throw_away_migrator,

Admittedly I don’t play on Xbox, but yeah their console naming is baffling to me and I honestly don’t know/can’t be bothered to figure it out. PlayStation is simple. Bigger numbers equal newer. Pro version? Just a modest step up but still clearly identifies as the same Gen.

When Xbox launched the One, I thought, “oh they’re going to reset the numbering convention. It’s awkward now but will be easier going forward.” Boy was I wrong.

On the other end there’s Nintendo, but the names are so different and distinct it’s easy enough to distinguish (except whatever the hell Wii U was).

Microsoft seems caught in the middle. They clearly didn’t want to be like PlayStation, but they don’t want to/can’t come up with unique names, so you get just a mouthful of nonsense letters and numbers.

Throw_away_migrator,

Youngin. I remember downloading a song took an hour. Want to download an album? Better clear out your weekend and hope no one else needed the phone

Throw_away_migrator,

What about a parfait? Everybody likes a parfait!

Throw_away_migrator,

Top of ticket candidates obviously matter, but voting in primaries, down ballot and local elections can have significant impacts. I know it’s trite, but the only answer is vote in every election you can. Voting for better candidates in smaller races can and will eventually work it’s way up to the top of ticket races.

A recent example would be both the democratic primaries in 2016 and 2020. While yes the more progressive candidates lost, their strong showings did help push the national party further left. Bernie’s message in 2016 has endured and grown in popularity nationally in the last decade.

When it comes to state and local elections, there are constant stories about right wing zealots (Mom’s for Liberty and the like) using school board and local elections to expand their power and influence.

I know it’s unpleasant, but you need to vote. If your state allows mail in voting, sign up for it. You can get your ballot, research the candidates and make more informed choices. Personally I’ll spend about an hour with the ballot researching the down ballot races and judges and the like.

And if you’re particularly motivated, volunteer for candidates. Your time can be an invaluable resource if you want to support better policies and candidates.

Sorry if this got a bit long winded, but apathy and non-participation is effectively a vote for the status quo. Political change can be slow and uneven but can only be gained with persistent effort.

Throw_away_migrator,

That’s Waffle House. You just described every Waffle House.

Throw_away_migrator,

Honestly, Inquisition is the low point in the series to me. If it can’t clear that bar then Bioware may be toast. I’ve replayed Origins countless times and it’s truly a great game. DA2 isn’t a perfect game, and certainly shows signs of EA’s influence degrading the product, but I have replayed of numerous and still find it a fun experience.

Inquisition, I think I’ve only completed it twice, at most. But replays always seem to stall out for me. I don’t find the characters as engaging and the “open world” elements feel like something to be overcome rather than something I want to dive into and explore.

Honestly, I’d rather they go smaller and focus on well designed areas/missions/quests with fun and engaging characters. I don’t need a huge map from a Bioware title. I just want a good story, with interesting characters and difficult narrative choices.

Throw_away_migrator,

Honestly, seeking compactness/shortest lines can create gerrymandered districts too. It can result neighborhoods or population centers being split into multiple districts and having their power diluted.

Drawing convenient/straight boarders can have lasting negative impacts. Just ask the British.

The solution is… Complicated. David Wasserman did a great piece on this many years ago for 538. It’s worth a read

For a moment, just imagine a Minnesota accent saying “goose.”

Now you know why they call it “grey duck.”

What movies, books or tv shows are meant to spoof/parody a particular genre while actually being a great example of the genre?

The 3 that come to mind for me are Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The Princess Bride. All three are poking fun at their respective genres but also are great examples of the genre. I’m curious if Lemmy has other such examples.

Throw_away_migrator,

I love Mel Brooks movies, but I think they’re just straight spoofs. For example Blazing Saddles while great and did such a great job skewering Westerns that it has been argued it killed the genre, it just isn’t a Western in it’s own right.

Throw_away_migrator,

I’ve been considering reading these books. This might just be the thing that pushes me to start.

Throw_away_migrator,

That’s a great call. I forgot about that movie. That is a good take on a slasher while also making fun of the genre.

Throw_away_migrator,

The line after that, “there is no available to replace him,” was especially shocking since they do have Riccardo just sitting there

Throw_away_migrator,

You’re telling me the billionaire whose family fortune came from apartheid emerald mines is a total cunt?

I’m shocked! Shocked! … Well, not that shocked.
