Hi, everyone, I’m Andrew, He/him pronouns. I’m a TTRPG, science, video game, and music (esp. the navel-gazing side of the metal spectrum) nerd. I’m currently learning Norwegian and working on immigrating away from the US. I post a lot about that last part right now, as it’s kind of the biggest thing in my life right meow.

Sometimes, people accuse me of being alarmist about . I try to stick to sensible science and verifiable data, and I strive to avoid exaggeration. Two years ago, I posted this study with 3 possible scenarios; some attacked me for saying I feared the worst-case scenario, while the researchers said the middle scenario was more likely. Guess which scenario we're in today? COVID isn't seasonal, it's conservatively killed 50-100% more than the flu, and it's evolving.

@chrisshaw @osma @augieray most of that is passive and no different than any other health and safety regulation (fire codes for businesses, industrial safety standards, etc.) why not just say that you’d rather have 6 figure annual deaths in the US alone than businesses have to have a filtration unit installed or you take the two seconds to put on a mask? Sure it sounds bad, but that’s because it is bad, and at least it would be honest.

VestigialLung,
@VestigialLung@dice.camp avatar

@chrisshaw @osma @augieray I don’t have current UK statistics on hand, but your policy of inaction has had similar effects as what people in the US have experienced, albeit not to quite the same extent, so control for population differences, and you’re still condoning an unconscionable number of deaths in your country out of a desire to pretend it isn’t happening.

VestigialLung,
@VestigialLung@dice.camp avatar

@chrisshaw @osma @augieray the difference is that you can’t put on a mask and prevent Alzheimer’s.

And plenty of people are pretending Covid isn’t happening, or at least isn’t a concern. I can’t speak for your country, but given how prevalent the virus still is, if you aren’t seeing near universal masking, people are either pretending it doesn’t matter, or they’re happy to contribute personally to the death toll. There isn’t really a third option.

The most important medical relationship in America is between a patient and the politicians deciding whether or not medically appropriate care conflicts with a conservative interpretation of Christianity. The second most important medical relationship is between the patient and their insurance provider who decides whether its shareholders would be better served by the patient not receiving medically appropriate care. Patient/doctor is at best of tertiary importance.

@luvcie @neurothing I almost posted the same Pain of Salvation track!

VestigialLung,
@VestigialLung@dice.camp avatar

@luvcie @neurothing you’d think something in a similar lyrical vein to Cult of Luna’s Vertikal album would be out there, emphasizing the bleaker side of cities, the depersonalization, loneliness, mountains of steel looming over you, etc. there’s plenty to make a pretty metal album out of in there.

I even tried tying hell in there, searching for songs about the city of Dis; pickings were sparse on the extreme metal end.

VestigialLung,
@VestigialLung@dice.camp avatar

@luvcie @neurothing I didn’t think about Paschendale, but I also posted it for the five list a few weeks back, and I’m making a playlist, so it’s burned for me now anyway, at least for the Thursday posts.

Other song(s) of the day hashtags I know of are Trans Music Monday, Tune Tuesday, and Friday Night Jukebox, so we’re well on our way to having one active for every day of the week. At my wife’s suggestion, I’m considering trying to start up Way Back Wednesday.

#GoodMorning!

#IVE is a #KPop #GirlGroup that I just never super got into. I didn't dislike their music, but nothing really clicked with me. Until I heard "I Am" - which has been on my playlist since it dropped and is unlikely to be leaving. I am just so ridiculously into the song. The #MusicVideo can be checked out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZUIwj3FgUY

However, subsequent tracks? Not as into it.

My #QuestionOfTheDay is - who is an artist where you generally aren't into them...except for that one song? And what's that one song that you're super into?

@mdmrn I love Tam Lin’s song Fever Birds; nothing else I’ve heard from the project has ever really landed for me, but this song has long been enough to keep the project on my radar.

@mdmrn yeah it is. In this case, I wish I could put my finger on what’s different/special about this song b/c it’s not unrepresentative of Tam Lin’s sound, just for some reason it’s this one and no others for me.

Question of the day. Please boost for a wider audience!

Answer silently or comment below!

If money was no object, what would you do with your time?

VestigialLung,
@VestigialLung@dice.camp avatar

@dancinyogi the first thing I’d probably do is nothing for a couple of months. I’ve basically been in school or working full time for my entire life, and taking a chunk of time to just… not, would be a truly novel experience.

After that, navigating an international immigration process, knowing how tough that is, and knowing how many people need of a way out of their country thanks to reich wing movements, I’d prob start an organization to help people through that.

for the week’s theme is songs about the sun. I worried I was going to have difficulty with this one, since my musical tastes skew so bleak, so ask me to post about the moon or night, and I can rattle off an endless supply of songs, but the day star… turns out I was right about having difficulty but more due to having trouble narrowing down than getting enough.

Songs will be nested under this.

1.) Neurosis - A Sun that Never Sets: I’ve got a quirk with music listening that’s probably a tiny sliver of synesthesia. A lot of music gets associated with imagery that comes unbidden to my head, such that they’re inseparable. This era of Neurosis is wandering through desert dunes, lost and out of water, the merciless sun beating down.

2.) Tiamat - Red of the Morning Sun
Don’t have a ton of commentary about the song itself, but this is one of my favorite goth rock/metal projects out there and is an excellent example of a band finding its sound. Their early work was extreme metal, and it’s… okay. Starting around Wildhoney they began evolving their sound in a less extreme direction, much to their benefit.

VestigialLung,
@VestigialLung@dice.camp avatar

3.) Samael - As the Sun
This is a weird album for this band. Most of their music falls in the black metal with some industrial elements camp. Around this album, they briefly shifted in more of a goth/industrial direction, sort of a heavier Rammstein with vocals being more of a rhythm instrument vibe. Personally, it’s my favorite of their albums, but I imagine it’s pretty polarizing for Samael fans.

VestigialLung,
@VestigialLung@dice.camp avatar

4.) Madison Cunningham - Sunshine Over the Counter
This album starts in a sort of indie/pop/folk vibe, a sound that isn’t normally my thing (it’s fine, but I rarely seek it out), but there’s enough avant-garde elements that slowly get introduced over the course of the album to suck me in. By the end, it’s really pushing the boundaries of what the early tracks setup by way of expectations.

Atlantean Kodex - Sol Invictus
Power metal is one of those genres I only listen to once every couple of months when I get the itch, but I really enjoy it those 5 or 6 times/yr.

This sort of bookends the Neurosis, the merciless sun, song/sound with an adoration for the sun at its nadir, a celebration that it’s return is beginning.

dang that's weird how these new variants are cropping up i thought y'all said covid was over now 🤔

@shayz0rz @eniko they should really consider dropping the second C from their name. It would be more accurate, and think of all the paper and ink printing 1/3 less name every time the agency had to name itself in a paper would result in. They could maybe forward those cost savings on to help cover the ongoing care needs for all the long Covid victims produced as a result of the pandemic they’re ignoring. It’s a win-win.
