With this week’s being Russian metal, knowing a bit of what Russian politics looks like, and with my stance of I don’t knowingly promote fascists, I decided to try to find someone taking a subversive stance on Russian politics. It would seem Google has some thoughts about the state of Russian politics that aren’t wrong but also aren’t what I’m looking for exactly.

One of the interesting things (for me) about this particular hashtag is the insight it can give you into your musical tastes. I expected to have an easier time with this prompt than I did, but apparently my musical tastes have skewed towards the grounded vs the spiritual, and I’m not one to pay a ton of attention to lyrics, so it’s odd that that trend exists.

Narrowing this down wasn’t easy. Turns out my musical vibe is pretty spoopy, who knew?

Coming out on top is a band that borrows heavily from the harder rock of the 50s through the 70s as well as (often) a heaping helping of early doom metal. This one skews a bit more rockabilly/psychobilly than doomy, but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that in my book, and it hits the prompt square on the nose.

Just learned that an extreme fundamentalist Christian cult from my home state, the 12 Tribes, is at this point a global phenomenon. So yeah, if you see a hippie-looking sandwich shop called the Yellow Deli, their main front, unless you’re a fan of funding slave labor and child abuse from a cult that’s been known to disappear those who are too critical of them, maybe grab a sandwich somewhere else instead.

Their big picture goal is to gather 144,000 virgins they can sacrifice in a mass suicide event to bring in their god’s golden age… somehow. Anyone not a member of their cult will burn in the lake of fire, especially anyone who isn’t a white cis het man or woman (but only if the woman understands her place is in the kitchen).

And since I’m on dice.camp, I should point out that if I broke out this very real - now global - cult in a TTRPG campaign, my players would accuse me of laying it on a little thick with the unrealism of something this wild existing and being this widespread in a modern setting.

For I thought I’d share Tactile Gemma (Ann-Mari and Monika Edvardsen). This band hit on a blend of darkwave and a sort of childlike fairy tale wonder (not really sure how else to describe it; the band’s weird). The end result comes across as innocent but vaguely unsettling.

I’m going to say probably the least surprising thing anyone who’s ever heard Comus’s music has heard: the band is a huge influence for Opeth’s Mikael Åkerfeldt, to the extent that the band pulled the names of their My Arms, Your Hearse album and the song The Baying of the Hounds from Comus lyrics.

Comus is a progressive folk rock outfit; they put out two albums separated by nearly half a century, brilliant work on both.
