WalrusDragonOnABike,

Why would you put that on your phone?

WalrusDragonOnABike,

Motorola generally supports unlocking bootloaders, unless you buy a specifically locked one from vendors (like AT&T, Verizon, Amazon Prime + Ads versions). Given it hasn’t even launched yet, its probably not support yet though?

WalrusDragonOnABike,

DST means you also have things like CST vs CET and given some places start DST earlier or later than others and some ignore it all together, we probably have at least 50 time zones.

Always fun trying to schedule international regular meetings when suddenly there’s a week when half the people’s times changed and the other half’s times haven’t yet, so you try to figure out which time would exclude the fewest essential people.

WalrusDragonOnABike,

Can confirm. Have been banned for forgetting /s in a stream once where I assumed it wasn’t needed because it was obviously ridiculous and my history there, but random mod thought otherwise.

Even recently here, I put quotes around something to paraphrase the argument some people make and then proceeded to make fun of it outside the quotes and I got a giant rant because someone didn’t realize I was arguing against that idea. Was not even sarcasm in this case, but I guess needed to put “Common dumdum argument:” before the quotes or something, so people would not get the wrong idea before getting to the end or a post 1/2 this size of this one.

WalrusDragonOnABike,

Who could have guessed the people who would be interested in EVs are the type of people who don’t want to buy a car that’s associated with far-right ideology? And far-right people think EVs are for weak libs and “rugged individuals” drive oversized trucks.

WalrusDragonOnABike,

I was a toddler when a doctor first try to get me on ADHD meds. Never officially been diagnosed with autism, but realized I might be on the spectrum in high school. I’ve known I’m a bit weird since I was a child to some extent, but generally didn’t have labels to put on it and didn’t care much.

Might also be a bit dyslexic or some similar issue? Had a school counselor ask me about that after I managed to mess up my test ID number in multiple different ways one year (but thankfully, she caught before sending the tests out somehow). And I did have relative difficulty with reading and spelling. I still regularly write letters in words out of order, but I just adjust by putting them between the letters I already wrote.

WalrusDragonOnABike,

I won’t buy all of the teslas. Looking forward to xan buying 3 times the total production of all Telsas.

WalrusDragonOnABike,

Way to relatable. Was thinking I’d like to build up some more savings, so I don’t have to worry as much about finances. But thinking maybe I should just try.

WalrusDragonOnABike,

Does this just make trans people not trans and make cis people trans and give them dysphoria? Only changing the mind, not the body? If so, then what does this do to NBies? Would more agender NBies become poly gender, gender fluid enbies become gender solid, and multi gender enbies become a gender?

Was the tradeoff meant to be specifically difficult for ace trans people?

How to explain cross-dressing to parents?

I started cross-dressing while I’m alone at home and few minutes ago I was doing that. There was a dress I wanted try and I did it now (I love it) but when I finished for today it was pretty hard to take it off because it wasn’t made for musculine body (first time having problem like that). I was scared that I won’t able...

WalrusDragonOnABike,

I’ve just started doing dressing in ways more non-conforming for my AGAB, but I didn’t realize my interest until after I moved out from my parents*. First just like hair clips here, leggings there. With my sister (and her boyfriend and her best friend), I just showed up in cosplay as a female character once for Ren Fest. No warning. No explanations.

*technically I was caught back when I was in middle school, but I had no clue back then…

WalrusDragonOnABike, (edited )

Definitely would upgrade to something like this if I upgraded to a class 3 ebike. I feel like just learning how to fall better would do a lot more for me on acoustic and class 2 ebikes, but having more protection would make practice easier and make my less scared of the ground (which is what leads to me instinctually doing stupid things like stiff arming a landing).

Still, public policy shouldn’t mandate things. Curious how hot the mesh shirts are though. Summers can be wet and very hot here. Been using a long-sleeve UV summer jersey, but that offers very minimal protection against sliding on asphalt or concrete (not that I have much experience with that since I was a child, despite a couple bone-breaking falls and a concussion). I’m a danger to myself, so probably would be worth upgrading to a little bit more protection, even if most people would be fine with less. I can’t move around my own house without injuring myself.

WalrusDragonOnABike,

People literally work at strip clubs and such as well. Some people work in the hospitals and see gruesome things that I’d much rather have labeled NSFW than things like porn.

WalrusDragonOnABike,

If you are owning houses just to use them as AIRBNBs, yes. Profiting off of artificial scarcity and already having money is bad. Being wealthy doesn’t mean you deserve to be more wealthy.

WalrusDragonOnABike,

always spits out excuses why buying a house isn’t “feasible” or would “lock them down too much”, etc etc.

Like not being a POS?

WalrusDragonOnABike,

Seems pretty nice. If I were looking for one now, I’d probably be considering it. Granted, I’d probably limit it closer to class2 speeds cause I’m a danger to myself. Curious if they brakes are good enough or need upgrading like some others…

WalrusDragonOnABike,

I only program non-seriously for work on occasions and I’ve rarely used copy/pasted code. Except maybe some of my own code because of using lazy logic trees to deal with variation in the data being processed. Doesn’t need to be pretty or efficient. Just needs to work well enough so I do a less manual work.

E-bike environmental impact in comparison to other forms of transport (www.youtube.com)

I editorialised the title as the original was clickbait, but the video itself is quite good. Interestingly, e-bikes are claimed to have lower emissions than acoustic bikes, although it likely depends on diet (the author didn’t specifically compare a vegan diet between the two types but did indicate that vegan + electric is the...

WalrusDragonOnABike,

Only thing I’ve broken on my acoustic carbon bike was my shoulder. Oh, and I snapped a pretty new chain once trying to pedal when the light turned green (which I think also messed up one of the teeth on the crankset).

WalrusDragonOnABike,

Diet is a huge component of most people’s footprint. If you start biking 12 hours more a week (how much I would need to if I wanted to switch from my ebike to my acoustic for commuting*), you are going to eat a lot more. If a significant amount of those calories is coming from the standard beef you’d get at a US supermarket, its no surprise you’d be better off using a coal-charged ebike at similar speeds**. So much fossil fuels go into producing that. Tomatoes are worse than chicken apparently though.

*I’m not in good enough to bike at work in under 1.25 hours multiple days in a row and still be in good enough condition to do my job, especially if there are headwinds.

WalrusDragonOnABike,

According to my HR monitor, I typically burn about 750-1000 calories/hr when doing cardio exercise for 1 hour. Like, a 3 hour session, I might burn 2400 calories. My basal metabolism when sitting and standing is about 120 calories/hr.

Even with an electric bike, I sometimes burn like 500 calories/hr. During actual bike rides, its more like 700 calories each way.

WalrusDragonOnABike,

I’ve used two different brand chest strap monitors (actually, 3, but one was in college spin class many years ago and I don’t have any of the data for that, but I used to average zone-4 heart rates with peaks over 210 bps basically every class, so it gives some comparison). With my current one, it seems responsive to everything from sedentary activity to intense cardio. That said, my average heart rate during exercise is above 150 (my most recent 1hr session, my HR rarely dropped below 160bps after the warmup), so the linear relationship between calories and HR no longer holds. So I agree I should take it with a grain of salt, but at least this calculator says at my weight I should be burning over 900 calories if my HR is 150 for 1 hour of exercise. My RHR is like 50, so its not like my HR is just always high either. Still HR-> calories still isn’t an exact conversion. A power meter or an O2 exhalation lab would give better info.

Anyways, I agree intense cardio workouts are a lot more than cycling, which was mentioned in my above comment (I only burn about 700 calories/hr commuting vs 750-1000 getting exercise).

The numbers I get from my HR apps are also lower than online calculators for equivalent workouts: they estimate my commute should be 900-1200 calories for my weight and pace (I’m 200lbs/90kgs), not 700 calories. I get to ride on lots of trails, so if not many people are out walking, I don’t have as much slowing down/speeding up as someone commuting by roads, and its on a carbon road bike, so that might contribute.

Also, given the length of the commute, I’m not going to go slower than normal recreational bike rides: I just try to avoid doing all-out sprints on the way to work and then the ride on the way home I regularly did all-out sprints during some segments. And even if I went at a more casual pace, the total calories actually wouldn’t change that much (maybe 10-15%?). It would of course spread the remaining calories over more time, so the burn rate would be lower.

Burning 1000 extra calories a day is killer.

Which is why I stopped acoustic biking to work and switched to ebike. I would be tired during my shift even after just biking one way. I don’t know if I ever biked to work two days in a row: I don’t think I could have done my job if I tried that.

WalrusDragonOnABike,

USA uses cal and kcal interchangeably because being confusing with units is our specialty. Guess I should say “Cal” instead of “cal”, but no one but chemists care about the difference here. My mistr.

WalrusDragonOnABike,

Kilo comes from greek and has meant 1000 for 1000’s of years. If you want 2^10 to be represented using greek prefixes, it better involve “deca” and “di”. Kilo (and di) would be usable for roughly 1.071508607186267 x 10^301 byte. KB was wrong when it was invented, but they were only wrong for decades at least.

WalrusDragonOnABike,

They hopefully would plan on continuing as normal even if they expect the company to tank. Otherwise it would be an obvious insider trading violation I think. Of course CEO is a bit of a fanboy of Musk, who regularly committed securities-related crimes and is always under SEC investigation for the crimes he repeatedly commits, but probably still makes more money off the crimes than the penalties…

WalrusDragonOnABike,

A decade ago, my parents got married in Vermont (before the Supreme Count decision in favor of gay marriage). Apparently they had a lot of just random people show up. I wasn’t invited because they didn’t want to pay travel costs, so idk how many. Granted, not sure how many knew it was a gay marriage: my mom passes as a guy on normal days, probably even moreso in a suit at a wedding.

Are there people who just attend random weddings regularly as like a hobby or something?

WalrusDragonOnABike,

That’s been a thing for a long time. Maybe not on the front page, but there’s been plenty of people using cleavage as major part of the appeal of their stream. I don’t see any problem with it. If people choose to watch streams for that reason, so be it. Personally, I started using twitch for politics streams/just chatting years ago and then branched into watching video games and occasional art streams.
