How do we know the universe outside our solar system truly exists?

This is something that has been bothering me for a while as I’m diving through space articles, documentaries etc. All seem to take our observations for granted, which are based on the data of the entire observable universe (light, waves, radiation…) we receive at our, in comparison, tiny speck. How do we know we are...

The answer is predictability. We see things. We don’t know what they are or what they mean. We come up with theories about what they are and how they work. Those theories in turn let us make predictions about other things or behaviours we should see from similar things in the future.

If our predictions are correct, then we know our theories are good at describing what we see, and we thus have improved our understanding of how the universe works. Even if our predictions aren’t correct, we have learnt something.

Rinse and repeat over generations of scientists.

I didn’t even use him for that. I did that part myself :)

If they start doing bad things

They knowingly house hate groups. They’ve been doing bad things since the start…

Fishermen's Pier, Puerto Madero, Buenos Aires, Argentina - December 2023 [OC] (lemmy.blahaj.zone)

Image description: A small section of a slightly ramshackle wooden pier photographed from a nearby shoreline, from a side on perspective. The pier is backlit and almost in silhouette. Several people can be seen fishing from the pier, and birds sit on the rocks underneath it...

Do I feel responsible for the selfish, harmful and bigoted choices made by a government I did my best to keep out of power? No, I don’t feel responsible, I feel angry

Why would you want to take away the tiny bit of bitterness that tea has?

It strikes me that there is the potential to use trusted remote servers as a means of recovering the lost data. I mean, nearly every lemmy instance except lemmy.ml will have copies of the missing data, and given the hugely redundant availability of that data (including the ability to compare from multiple sources to establish/verify trust), using that data to rebuild missing content seems like it could be useful functionality.

Lemmy needs better integration/federation. Too much content is hidden. A community on the biggest instance was not visible to me on another large instance.

I did a search from shitjustworks for “reddit die” and did not find lemmy.world/c/watchredditdie so I made sh.itjust.works/c/watchredditdie (unnecessarily). This should really not happen. When someone makes a community there should be a “ping” sent out to notify all other federated instances....

The community you’re trying to subscribe to only has one post, and I believe that post may predate your instance spinning up.

It’s not really a good example of federation on Lemmy, because it doesn’t have content to federate.

Even your ping idea wouldn’t have worked here

The parents should also be forensically examined to make sure they are not simply capitalizing and pressuring the kid to conform or branch out in this way

Trans people are losing their rights, facing abuse, and dying in greater numbers than ever. The idea that parents are forcing their kids to transition as part of some trend is part of an active misinformation campaign behind the people trying to create wedges to undermine trans folks ability to access care.

You may be a left wing socialist, but you’re parroting right wing, anti trans wedge tactics

Do You Think Refusing To Transition A Child, Should Be Considered Child Abuse?

It shouldn’t be “considered” child abuse.

It is child abuse.
