This is something that has been bothering me for a while as I’m diving through space articles, documentaries etc. All seem to take our observations for granted, which are based on the data of the entire observable universe (light, waves, radiation…) we receive at our, in comparison, tiny speck. How do we know we are...
The answer is predictability. We see things. We don’t know what they are or what they mean. We come up with theories about what they are and how they work. Those theories in turn let us make predictions about other things or behaviours we should see from similar things in the future.
If our predictions are correct, then we know our theories are good at describing what we see, and we thus have improved our understanding of how the universe works. Even if our predictions aren’t correct, we have learnt something.
Meta threads will open federation to the fediverse soon, and while this is mainly to mastodon it will still affect lemmy. They are acting like they won’t be evil, but let’s be real this is Facebook when have they ever done that....

It strikes me that there is the potential to use trusted remote servers as a means of recovering the lost data. I mean, nearly every lemmy instance except lemmy.ml will have copies of the missing data, and given the hugely redundant availability of that data (including the ability to compare from multiple sources to establish/verify trust), using that data to rebuild missing content seems like it could be useful functionality.
I did a search from shitjustworks for “reddit die” and did not find lemmy.world/c/watchredditdie so I made sh.itjust.works/c/watchredditdie (unnecessarily). This should really not happen. When someone makes a community there should be a “ping” sent out to notify all other federated instances....
The parents should also be forensically examined to make sure they are not simply capitalizing and pressuring the kid to conform or branch out in this way
Trans people are losing their rights, facing abuse, and dying in greater numbers than ever. The idea that parents are forcing their kids to transition as part of some trend is part of an active misinformation campaign behind the people trying to create wedges to undermine trans folks ability to access care.
You may be a left wing socialist, but you’re parroting right wing, anti trans wedge tactics
How do we know the universe outside our solar system truly exists?

Lemmy needs better integration/federation. Too much content is hidden. A community on the biggest instance was not visible to me on another large instance.
