Aww, I've been really looking forward to using the Switch while on the stationary bike, but it seems like everything I try to play is trashed by mobile game tactics.

I paid full price for these games, and yet they still serve ads and demand in-game purchases.

adaliabooks,
@adaliabooks@ohai.social avatar

@Craigp

I got Endless Ocean for my partner and she seems to be enjoying it. No ads or upsells as far as I'm aware (the upsells might be for Nintendo Online to use the multiplayer functionality?)

adaliabooks,
@adaliabooks@ohai.social avatar

@Craigp

The single player seems to mostly be swimming about scanning fish and learning about them, with the occasional bit of treasure to collect as well.
There are two modes, a proc gen solo dive mode where you just swim around a random area and a story which sets you some quests and stuff (I haven't really watched her playing much so I'm not sure what they're like)

Multiplayer is an entirely separate option.

adaliabooks,
@adaliabooks@ohai.social avatar

@Craigp

Yeah, it sucks... I don't bother with reviews much at all. I'll take a glance at Steam or GOG reviews for a game and try and get a balanced view of whether I might like it, but so many reviews are nothing to do with the game itself these days it's hard to get a feel for a game from them.

I miss my old Nintendo Gamer magazines, I could always rely on them to tell me if games were worth it or not.

Hope you enjoy it!

Cyborg Lumberjack... wow.

I imagine they'll make a few bucks off it, but I can't really see it competing with real games any time soon...

Genres reach their calcified endpoint, when what used to be a powerful symbol to use in a story is now just set dressing to be used in formula.

Sci fi and fantasy both reached this point long ago.

For example, the concept of 'monsters' in a fantasy game, or even the concept of 'races'. These are things which we simply mimic year after year because we are expected to.

The structure of our stories wraps around them and we're supposed to feel moved when they come up.

adaliabooks,
@adaliabooks@ohai.social avatar

@Craigp

In my concepts I tend to steer clear of 'monsters' in the traditional sense. Sure, there are monster like creatures, wyverns for example, but in reality they are just a big, dangerous animal. They're not evil, but they attack people because they encroach on their environment or because they are small enough to be legitimate prey.

Dragons on the other hand are intelligent creatures. They are feared because of their size and appearance, and because some are undoubtedly nasty.

adaliabooks,
@adaliabooks@ohai.social avatar

@Craigp

I find the idea of, for example, orcs or goblins who are just inherently evil or violent very boring. It doesn't really make sense.

That doesn't mean there wouldn't be conflict between those species and humans, but just make it based on something more than orcs = bad. The reasons humans and orcs might have conflict are the same as the reason humans have conflict with each other.

adaliabooks,
@adaliabooks@ohai.social avatar

@Craigp

Yeah, that really makes sense.

I'm not overly creative so I tend to just borrow from real world cultures and examples, but if I were aiming to make a world completely from scratch then I would probably do something similar.

adaliabooks,
@adaliabooks@ohai.social avatar

@Craigp

As you said, it's all a matter of perspective.

If you farm chickens then foxes are a pest that steal your livestock, however if wild chickens were a dangerous pest in the area destroying your crops then foxes might be prized and revered, even domesticated and treated as pets.

I don't see why monsters would be any different, what behaviour seems monstrous would absolutely depend on the needs and beliefs of the people involved.

adaliabooks,
@adaliabooks@ohai.social avatar

@Craigp

I often think about necromancy in these terms. Necromancy is almost always seen as evil, because disturbing the dead is taboo in most cultures.

But that's not to say you couldn't have a culture where necromancers were revered for being able to bring back your dead grandfather's spirit to give you some advice.

Or where the physical remains of a person were considered unimportant as their soul had departed and so utilising or reanimating them wasn't frowned upon particularly.

It's fun, I decided to do a run for the islands achievement and the legitimacy in particular makes it a lot more difficult to get away with stuff like disinheriting without pissing people off.

I'm secluded away in Iceland for my capital so haven't had to worry about plagues too much but it seems to have been done well.

Legends seem fun too, though I haven't quite grasped the ins and outs of them yet.

Yeah, I could certainly believe that of him. Repetitive behaviour with the omelette, not great at social interactions, generation gap friendship.

My partner and I recently watched Gilmore Girls and practically every character is either autism or ADHD coded (or both)

Martin Landau, William Shatner, and Leonard Nimoy are all famous for gallivanting across the galaxy.

But what do they have in common with Billy Connelly?

Edit. @radiojammor got the right answer.

They all forgot the golden rule. ACAB. Befriended Columbo and ended up in the slammer.

Billy Connelly watches as Columbo acts cute.
William Shatner enjoying some banter with Columbo. He is going to be bantering with Bubba in the Pen for life no parole for 60.
Leonard Nimoy looks sceptical but Cool mbo weaves his web.

adaliabooks,

@MachineLordZero

Rimworld and Dwarf Fortress sound like they would fit the bill unless you're specifically looking for an RPG.

Owlcat's Pathfinder RPGs have base building aspects, Rogue Trader is (imo) a superior game but doesn't have quite as much in the way of base building.

The original Xenoblade Chronicles has a colony with a lot of quests surrounding upgrading and rebuilding it. Plus it's a fantastic game, you'd need some form of Nintendo console though.

It's incredible just how quickly and completely he managed to kill it.

The town is covered in ads for slimy new tech startups saying that if you join, you can earn tickets to 'secret concerts'.

That did get me thinking about illegal musical performances.

Of course those aren't illegal. Those aren't even real. They're a fiction to drum up exclusivity while keeping costs to a minimum by not committing to any venues, dates, or bands.

They'll just pass along a few tickets to some cheap-ass random show and, boom, secret concert tickets.

But illegal shows do exist.

adaliabooks,
@adaliabooks@ohai.social avatar

@Craigp

I get what you mean I think, one of my favourite things in RPGs is finding ridiculously cheesy class/skill or whatever combos that just annihilate the enemy, it's not cheating, there may occasionally be a bug exploit involved, but mostly it's just pushing the rules of the game to their limits and seeing what works. Going beyond the way the developers intended it to be played.
Like the weird and wonderful contraptions Zelda players come up with in TotK or the crazy kill videos of BotW.

Craigp, to random
@Craigp@mastodon.social avatar

Now thinking about confined interior spaces. Like, say, uh, ON A BOAT. I'd like to have players walk around as people as well as just drive the boats.

The physicality of these spaces is important. So the question is: how does the player navigate them?

Obviously they walk around like in any other game.

But games do not have confined spaces. If you see a confined space in a game, it's usually some kind of canned animation of moving through it.

Normal camera choices are a bit iffy here.

adaliabooks,
@adaliabooks@ohai.social avatar

@Craigp

I think I came across this in my attempts at camera work, the issue I had was when it overflowed from 360 to 0 degrees it would spin the whole way back around instead of just moving that extra degree and wrapping around.

I can have a look at what I did to sort if you'd like.

adaliabooks,
@adaliabooks@ohai.social avatar

@Craigp

There's something odd with the angles in Unreal, thinking about it I'm not sure it was the camera that was the problem, I think it was when I was trying to have my character turn towards a particular direction and it kept spinning in circles. Unfortunately I think I broke that code when I tried to update my version of Unreal for the project.

Let me root out my back up of the original.

adaliabooks,
@adaliabooks@ohai.social avatar

@Craigp

It's alright, it's something I've been meaning to do since I messed up the project anyway, it's just given me an excuse to do it :)

adaliabooks,
@adaliabooks@ohai.social avatar

@Craigp

What about a glowing outline for your character (and maybe the bounds of the walkable floor, though that might be harder) that would show through the objects?
Like they do in CRPGs when you walk behind something.

adaliabooks,
@adaliabooks@ohai.social avatar

@Craigp

If knowing the heights of the stairs and stuff isn't too important you could possibly do a top down (or a very high fixed angle) camera.
Though that would cause all kinds of other issues if you were to have multiple floors I suppose.

@Craigp@mastodon.social avatar

Well, I understand how Gerstner waves work now. It's much, much simpler than Wikipedia would have you believe. Like holy shit, that's a nonsense bullshit article.

But I still have to implement all that shit. Sigh...

I know that there is a way to get it already. I'm pretty sure there's a reference texture being created by Unreal's water plugin, because I can see ortho-aligned dots around the buoyancy elements, no matter how they're rotated.

So those are reference pixels.

But where...

adaliabooks,
@adaliabooks@ohai.social avatar

@Craigp

Does it not give you the minimum and maximum sizes of the waves or something?
If you could set your boat at the height of the minimum wave it might look alright, or possibly the mid point between the two.

Craigp, to Unreal
@Craigp@mastodon.social avatar

... Wait. Wh...

Hold it. I've been putting the movement code into the Pawns. But in this official starter kit, the movement code is in the PlayerController?

... What's the best way?

adaliabooks,
@adaliabooks@ohai.social avatar

@glassbottommeg @Craigp

Yeah, this is what I found when playing around with stuff, I think I started off putting the movement logic in the PC as that's what was default but eventually found that it's best to think of the PC as the human equivalent of AI. Let the pawn handle everything else and then you can just swap the PC and an AI controller at will.

Craigp, to random
@Craigp@mastodon.social avatar

Here's the thing obscured by our awful late capitalist society:

People like to work together. People like to accomplish things.

If we didn't, we'd be extinct.

We've managed to convince everyone that they "hate to work", but really we just hate the framework put in place to exploit work.

adaliabooks,
@adaliabooks@ohai.social avatar

@datarama @Craigp

But to me that's the point of post-scarcity and things like UBI, if you want to work, you can. And you can do whatever you want, because it doesn't have to be profitable or earn you enough to live on.

There's nothing wrong with work it self, hell most of the things we do for hobbies are work for someone.
