I'd never vote for Trump, but how could anyone ever vote for this staunch supporter of genocide?

    @rayckeith I don't understand why the govt doesn't educate and properly pay British doctors and nurses for the NHS. I don't have a problem at all with immigrants working there, but it seems stupid not at least trying to be self-reliant wrt basic health care.

    OK, so I want a nice book database for cataloguing my provate book collection and chose . It's nice and available on , but it's not under a free license - its "anti-capitalist license" excludes military and law enforcement and hence doesn't allow everyone to use it as a free license should.

    Does anyone have good ideas for alternatives?

    Some thoughts on spam:

    1. Right now it's a single idiot running a scripted Joe Job. But we know how spam ecosystems develop. The next steps are inevitable.

    2. Next, someone will release an activitypub spamming script. It will hammer on servers to create throwaway accounts then use them to post.

    3. This will drive a bunch of small servers off the fediverse and cause acrimonious defederation squabbles.

    4. Surviving servers will limit sign-ups, requiring proof of humanity (or identity).

    @cstross A possible solution might be a collective blacklist, with everyone immediately blocking any server from which spam originates, with a procedure for getting back when the problem is handled and the spammer gone. This places the onus on the instance, which seems right and resembles old Usenet strategies.

    I actually kind of liked Comic Sans. Maybe not for a resume, but in some, lighter contexts I don't even regret using it. But then I was never a font nerd 🙂

    How would the "right to Exit" (and I love how it Just Works when switching Mastodon services) work for a journalist booted off Twitter? Suppose this journalist now takes up Mastodon. He can't just download a Followers file on twitter, b/c many of them probably aren't on Mastodon, and even if they were it's not easy to find out who each Twitter follower is on Mastodon.

    This might oblige Twitter to build a "bridge" to allow the journo's toots to reach their followers as tweets ...

    My old-ish review of/comments on "Walkaway" by @pluralistic

    tl;dr: "As for the very notion of “walkaway”, the notion that people can start leaving our present society behind, I love it! I also love the idea that the future we get is the future we decide to build.

    Given that one of the book’s main characters is Brazilian, I’d have loved to see refences to Brazil’s many actual walkaway communities – indigenous communities, century-old quilombos (maroon societies) etc."

    Reading "Doppelganger" by @naomiaklein based on a recommendation from @pluralistic

    The analysis of the mirror world of Bannonite conspiracy theories is poignant and important.

    Just as scary, however, is the mirror world into which "hard centre" democrats receded after Trump's victory in 2016: The election was "stolen" by Russian interference, Trump was a "Russian asset", Putin was the evil mastermind behind it all. Instead of owning up to Clinton's loss, they all seemed to have gone insane.

    agger,
    @agger@mastodon.modspil.dk avatar

    @naomiaklein @pluralistic

    Just like the tendency to blame the "white working class" for Trump's victory. In actuality, the white working class was under-represented among the Trump voters.

    Why did these centrists supposedly all defending "reason" go down that rabbit hole? Maybe it is and was too painful to recognize that business as usual and dynastic entitlement (and "lean in" feminism) is not what the US needs right now. What it needed at the time was Bernie Sanders.

    agger,
    @agger@mastodon.modspil.dk avatar

    @naomiaklein @pluralistic

    Relevant for the idea of "lean in" feminism and allowing women and minorities in board rooms, I'm currently based in the UK (normally, Denmark) and the government here is a case in point: Is Rishi Sunak as PM a victory for anti-racism and inclusivity?

    No, that's not a victory for anything. Sunak may be non-white, but what matters is that he's posh. Inclusivity would, in the UK, mean letting people in who are not upper class. More precisely, who are not rich:.

    In case people haven't noticed, the cesspool formerly known as Twitter no longer has the option to see in Notifications only replies to my posts and citations of my name. Instead it has a "For you" stream that mixes that with unrelated posts that the platform selected by some algorithm.

    Amid the incessant stream of bitcoiner spam, it just made me read three tweets by Scott "Dilbert" Adams, complaining that "cancel culture" has "neutered" American "males", and promising a reaction...

    agger,
    @agger@mastodon.modspil.dk avatar

    @JorgeStolfi Let's just hope that all sensible people will just forget that Twitter ever existed.
