ai6yr,

@melanie The US had a huge asbestos-as-soil-amendment problem, too.

ai6yr,

@melanie "Vermiculite was discovered in the mountains near Libby in 1919, and vermiculite mining quickly became the dominant industry in town. The mineral, which has many commercial uses, from acoustic tiling to insulation, is perhaps most widely known today as the small white bits mixed into potting soil. ... When WR Grace & Company acquired the mines in 1963, they were producing 80% of the world's vermiculite. However, the strain of vermiculite being mined was heavily contaminated with a number of asbestiform minerals that have come to be known as Libby amphibole mix." https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanres/article/PIIS2213-2600(17)30048-6/fulltext

ai6yr,

@melanie Most vermiculite produced until 1990 (or at least, 80% of it) was contaminated. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

ai6yr,

@meganL I switched over to perlite after learning about the issues with vermiculite, but not sure if perlite also has issues...

ai6yr,

@meganL Well, it sounds like where it is mined was the problem, but I suspect that if vermiculite often develops near asbestos-like minerals, it's more likely to have that issue. Perlite, on the other hand, does not have a documented history of those issues... thus, I have switched to perlite (and coir, instead of peat) here... https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4002636/

Hmm, left an empty nuc (small box) at a property with a beehive and a swarm flew into it and moved in yesterday or today, LOL. Had bees scouting my bag, so left an Amazon box baited with a single frame, in case there are others around...
