A photographer's dream. I've been photographing at Mono Lake for many years, and never did I expect to get photos like these, I didn't think it was possible. The aurora came and went for only about 15 minutes with that intensity, shifting colors before vanishing.

Interesting, the alcohol content in the hard cider served at La Crêperie de Paris at Epcot is only 3%. Going to brew up a batch of some kind of hard cider here today, probably, and all the recipes seem to be double that.

Hmm, recipes all seem to essentially be:

sterilize everything
pasteurize apple juice, if necessary
add sugar/honey/sweetener depending on preference/amount of alcohol desired
ferment (primary only, or primary/secondary) at some temperature that is not hot
bottle
pasteurize to prevent a gory death by shattering bottle

Looks like this experiment will be:

Langer's 100% apple juice (which was apparently on sale at the store) -- no preservatives
Lalvin D47 yeast (which I have because of mead making, champagne yeast)
64.5 degree fermentation (that's my mead fridge temp) -- not sure if I need to get it started first at room temp or if it goes straight in...

@mjausson LOL I haven't used my irrigation system since before the pandemic... I have plans to cap off the automatic valves, so they don't leak.

@ATLeagle @mjausson There's definitely something to be said for hardiness. I am a fan of the edible weeds here for that reason. Zero need to worry about them and they keep on producing even if you pull half of them out, LOL.

At the bottom: Is climate change affecting La Nina’s impact?

El Nino and La Nina are now happening on top of the effects of global warming. That can exacerbate temperatures, as the world saw in 2023, and precipitation can go off the charts.

Since summer 2023, the world has had 10 straight months of record-breaking global temperatures. A lot of that warmth is coming from the oceans, which are still at record-high temperatures.

La Nina should cool things a bit, but greenhouse gas emissions that drive global warming are still rising in the background. So while fluctuations between El Nino and La Nina can cause short-term temperature swings, the overall trend is toward a warming world.
