Whoa, it’s been a decade since Halt And Catch Fire ended?!? Totally worth a rewatch, at least season 1.

I know critics and fans like the later seasons more but that first arc was amazing because it was based on the crazy real life story of Compaq, a bunch of brilliant nut jobs that took on the massive risk of reverse engineering IBM’s iconic PC. https://oldbytes.space/@mingo/112563886594697440

The kind of people who would modify their car’s exhaust to be louder also scored high on the “psychopathy and sadism” scale.

@davidho the researcher’s formal title must be Captain Obvious 😂

I had a run in with one of those dumb “rolling coal” trucks just last weekend, where they pulled up next to a bunch of cyclists on the side of a country road and then coated them with a black cloud. So stupid.

Going to party like it's 2004 and give Firefox a try again. I'm drowning in tabs and heard that it's particularly good (almost too good) at solving the problem.

In mid-April, I did my first trail race in Moab, Utah. The Amasa 25K (15.5 miles) with 2,400 feet elevation gain and loss, and with a section that isn't even a trail.

I wrote about it:

@nazhamid that’s an amazing accomplishment and an even better read. How did you remember all those details from such a punishing race?

Also love that we’re on similar journeys but switching sports. I’m cycling because a bum knee keeps me running and this is a good reminder to document the journey more.

@vanderwal well that’s a new one – ESPN didn’t have replays of Imola, not even in Spanish. Watched the highlights on youtube and it looks like I missed a really tense battle between Max and Lando.

On to watching the Monaco qualifying, that’s always the most exciting one of the year anyway. It’s usually the actual race order and also helps that it’s stunningly gorgeous.

Had a world’s colliding moment! I’m still floating from Man U’s biggest win in a decade while trying to watch yesterday’s Formula 1 race and boom, Diogo and Antony pop up on the track to talk to Martin Brundle.

What an epic weekend to kick off your summer vacation – follow up a historic win in soccer’s oldest tournament by going to Monaco, the most glamorous and historic race in the world, less than 24 hours later.

Woke up before dawn to watch Manchester United’s last game of the season (and probably the manager’s last game ever) and had an absolutely epic time. Made wifey and me hoot and holler like it was a Super Bowl.

Lots of little green shoots of hope for next season! I mean it can’t get worse, right?

@alabut ManU FA Cup or Monaco Quals?

alabut,
@alabut@techhub.social avatar

@vanderwal FA Cup! Got up at 6am after barely any sleep, couldn’t believe what I was seeing, slept it off and am just barely getting fully conscious now. How epic was that?!?

Also about F1: it’s been such a crazy two weeks that I’m not caught up on Imola either and don’t know results, so I’m going to do a double header with the race replays this week. How epic was Lando’s first victory?

So much great stuff lately and this summer’s going to be fun too. Euros, Tour De France.

@vanderwal that’s quite a way to decompress, good for him! I miss traveling abroad in the summers, that’s something I’ll get back into after my elderly dogs cross the rainbow bridge.

I’ve definitely got some questions in mind about flex, since I’ve been quietly revamping my site to de-Bootstrap the CSS. I’ve wrapped my head around the basics of grid layouts but flex is like float’s even more mischievous cousin 😂

100% true post by @elly – the job market is apocalyptically bad. I’ve been in the game over 20 years and the last two years is like the dot com crash all over again.

It’s not just designers; the market for agencies, PM’s and even frontend devs has cratered too. The roles are polarized between fullstack devs and the people that write their checks – startup founders and bigtech upper management – with some nibbling around the edges with contract work. The number of product people in other roles is a rounding error and dying breed.

I’m concerned about not just my future but where my industry is going.

Anyone remember when we used to describe Twitter’s founding team as “a clown car that crashed into a gold mine” back in the day? Looks like OpenAI is the new ongoing circus car wreck that keeps failing upwards.

A number of overlanding creators will be launching exclusive series on the XOverland Network, which is a Netflix-like play. Curious how much they’ll be paid and whether it’ll be worth it versus “owning” (YT tho’) their own content. If XOverland Network was a proven platform like Netflix, it’d make sense, but I feel as if some of the creators have followings that won’t make the jump.

I.e. Do I need another subscription? I would rather support directly via Patreon (which I do).

alabut,
@alabut@techhub.social avatar

@nazhamid what’s the saying in the military? If you have a doubt, then there is no doubt. Or something like that. My instincts align with yours on the probable outcome.

That’s a tough one though. We like to talk a lot about owning your own content but usually in my circles that’s about blogging for free. Making something valuable enough to be worth paying for is a totally different mountain to climb and it seems to me that the challenge is amplified when that thing is video.

alabut,
@alabut@techhub.social avatar

@nazhamid yeah I was coming at it more from the audience angle. How big could it be for yet another niche streaming service? Or are my instincts off and the long tail is bigger and more underserved than I appreciate (although that sounds like every failed startup pitch ever in my life 😂)

@vanderwal no, separate devices like the old fart I am 😂

Wifey’s got the TV remote while I have the iPad. Congrats on closing out the season in the European spots, that’s quite a comeback from the bottom half of the table.

@joel being privacy-friendly is the entire premise of @plausible and I love it, have been a paying customer for a few years now. That way I don’t have to put a cookie notice on my site, plus it’s a super tiny download and blazing fast.

https://phanpy.social is a pretty incredible Mastodon client. Entirely web based, looks great on mobile and desktop, you can configure your shortcuts that appear above or below the river of news.

Some screenshots from my own account: good notifications page, different kinds of toots get a different status, plus Boosts are shown in their own carousel.

I've heard one developer made all this, it's pretty incredible.

Boosts are rolled up into a carousel of toots you can view with sideways scrolling
Threads are shown grouped together and single posts from threads are indicated as such.

alabut,
@alabut@techhub.social avatar

@jnv @mathowie @ivory yeah, I can see going that way if you want one app to rule them all and to be cross-platform. I’m happy with my setup though – app diversity and single platform.
