This discussion about whether the purpose of Mastodon is to centralize or decentralize social media seems pretty esoteric to me. The purpose is to build a vibrant platform and alternative to Twitter – not to use some particular technology that most people struggle to understand.

@osma @atomicpoet I’m all for decentralization. I run my own server too. I think it’s an important underlying technological requirement for a sustainable social network without the flaws that destroyed Twitter. But most people are not technically inclined to ever understand the difference, and they don’t care. For them decentralization will never be the point of a social network.

Stefan Korshak's reports about the war in are always worth reading.

"Budanov said that talks are advancing for a major prisoner exchange which would basically hand all POWs, both sides, back to their home countries. It's hard for me to believe when some people are complaining that fedi seems like a ghost town. My timeline is so fast I have no hope in hell keeping up. I use tools to pick up the interesting posts (by repeat links, boosts and, yes, favorite counts) and I still miss stuff daily. And that's ok. Quiet, this place is not.

My top three tips for beginners on Mastodon:

  1. Add a profile picture.
  2. Follow many people. You need to follow hundreds to get a lively timeline. And in the meantime use the local and federated timelines to find interesting stuff.
  3. Don't use the official Mastodon app. There are much better third-party alternatives.

How are the NATO countries doing in reaching the 2 percent goal for defense spending? The slowest to approach the target will be Slovenia, Denmark, and Belgium. However, the supreme underperformer remains Luxembourg. https://icds.ee/en/defence-spending-who-is-doing-what/

@minkonto Iceland has a special deal where they essentially outsourced their national defense to the U.S. in exchange for unlimited access to Keflavik. I'm not sure how to count that.
