What an interesting discovery with solar panels!

For decades, we have been placing solar panels at a low angle, facing south. But new experiments show, vertical solar panels give better yields. This is because these panels generate energy from light on both sides of the panel. And as they are placed with one side east, the other side west, they harvest a lot of sunlight on the east side in the morning, and on the west side in the evening.

Matt Ferrell has the story:

Now that Ukraine's shortage of weapons and ammunition is about to get solved, there is increased attention on the two other big problems on the frontline: Lack of fortifications and a manpower deficit.

In this edition of the Logic of War newsletter I discuss these two problems. Since I won't be publishing a regular video on YouTube this week, I decided to make access free for all on this one. https://www.logicofwar.com/ukranies-three-big-problems/

anderspuck,
@anderspuck@krigskunst.social avatar

@t_mkdf The Russians having bespoke detachments for building fortifications is probably also one of the reasons why they started to build so soon. It did not demand an active choice because these units had nothing else to do.

@kikeriffs Intelligence sharing probably continued despite the aid package being delayed, but my understanding is that it is increased now with military advisors in the country.

I think both Ukraine and the West have now understood that it will be a long war and that there are no quick fixes. So in that sense I don’t think there is so much need for a plan C. It’s more about many efforts that must pull the same way for a long time with small adjustments along the way.

@Dodo_sipping @randahl If there is something sensitive, it won’t be in the list. Or it will be hidden in a broad category. For example ammunition for HIMARS can be many different things.

10-post thread by Angry Staffer: 1/...

Let’s talk .

There’s a lot of analysis out there that I believe is driven by a fundamental misunderstanding of the way fights wars.

Bottom line up front: Russia’s current goals in Ukraine aren’t necessarily victory, at least not in the traditional military sense.

We’ve seen evidence of this since even before Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014. More on that later.

anderspuck,
@anderspuck@krigskunst.social avatar

@DeeGLloyd @GottaLaff Me too. It’s not particularly insightful regarding Russia’s war aims or how their system works.

Har netop set den nye Afdeling Q film Den Grænseløse - sikke en skuffelse. Kan slet ikke måle sig med den spænding der var i de første film. Det gik ned af bakke da Jussi Adler Olsen krævede en udskiftning af skuespillerne

@anderspuck@krigskunst.social avatar

@nickfrederiksen @aphandersen Meget enig. Jeg synes de blev for mystiske, og det kom mere til at handle om Carl Mørchs personlige psykiske spøgelser. De matte farver irriterede mig også. Kunne meget bedre lide de første film.

“Johnson received a key intelligence briefing from [CIA Director], who painted a picture of the dire situation on the battlefield in Ukraine and the global consequences of inaction, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the situation. The briefing left a lasting impression, and Johnson became increasingly convinced the fate of Western democracy was on his shoulders, sources close to him said.”

@anderspuck@krigskunst.social avatar

@randahl @DeeGLloyd @gtconway3 Remarkable change of heart for a man who until this point has never given a hoot about Ukraine or facts in general. Count me skeptical. This could just as easily be part of a deal where Johnson got the choice between being portrayed as the hero or being humiliated by losing the House.

anderspuck,
@anderspuck@krigskunst.social avatar

@randahl @DeeGLloyd @gtconway3 True. One kind of pressure can lead to one thinking that maybe there is something worth considering about the other side’s arguments.
I think Jake Broe has a good take on it. https://youtu.be/1su7ZvUFJGI. According to him, it wasn’t Mike Johnson but Donald Trump who changed his mind. (I didn’t know before that it was Jake making the thumbs up memes. 😊)

anderspuck,
@anderspuck@krigskunst.social avatar

@randahl @amayer @DeeGLloyd @gtconway3 I have thought about Cameron’s visit too. I’m not sure there have been threats involved, but I do think Jake might have a point that Trump is annoyed that the only thing anybody wants to talk with him about is Ukraine.

anderspuck,
@anderspuck@krigskunst.social avatar

@t_mkdf @amayer @randahl @DeeGLloyd I don’t think Biden cared about splitting it up at this point. It was something they cared about before when there was a fear that the House could pass aid for Israel and not Ukraine. There was a small victory in the loan part of the bill, but I think frankly no one cares about that either.

anderspuck,
@anderspuck@krigskunst.social avatar

@t_mkdf @amayer @randahl @DeeGLloyd I genuinely don’t think he cared about splitting up the bill at this point. The situation he wanted to avoid was having to veto a bill on aid to Israel.

randahl, to random
@randahl@mastodon.social avatar

@anderspuck BTW I saw, ATACMS were mentioned directly in the bill. Have you heard anything about actual numbers?

anderspuck,
@anderspuck@krigskunst.social avatar

@DeeGLloyd @randahl I haven't seen a specific number, and my impression is that the president can decide not to do it. So we will see.

randahl, to random
@randahl@mastodon.social avatar

Several of you have asked, why half the Republican party has voted for Ukraine aid today, if the party is against it.

The truth is, many republicans have wanted this aid for months — even Mike Johnson was for it in the beginning.

But Trump wanted Biden’s Ukraine agenda to fail, and very few Republicans dare to go against the tzar, because if they do, Trump will immediately endorse another political candidate in their home district.

But what turned this around was security briefings…

1/2

anderspuck,
@anderspuck@krigskunst.social avatar

@randahl I am not convinced. I think they knew that a number of republicans would either sign the discharge petition or resign from Congress if they did not pass the Ukraine bill. The only way to avoid an embarrassing defeat was to do this.

anderspuck,
@anderspuck@krigskunst.social avatar

@Dodo_sipping @randahl Not entirely, but I am highly skeptical that the intelligence briefings changed Johnson's mind on this.

anderspuck,
@anderspuck@krigskunst.social avatar

@randahl Yes, I also think it was more likely that a number of representatives had threatened to resign after April 30 (after that and the seat will be vacant until November). Only a small number would be required to swing the House to the democrats.

anderspuck,
@anderspuck@krigskunst.social avatar

@randahl @Dodo_sipping Sure. They want so sound smart and responsible.

anderspuck,
@anderspuck@krigskunst.social avatar

@PlukkiePanda He has been receiving those every day for seven months.

anderspuck,
@anderspuck@krigskunst.social avatar

@DeeGLloyd @randahl Well, I think even Mike Johnson would find it embarrassing if he lost his seat. 🙂
