This says a lot about the state of the Russian media landscape. The press secretary of the Russian defense ministry has resigned, and this is a quote from the TASS article about it:
""I will be assuming new duties. Almost 7 years in the Defense Ministry have flown by like a MiG-31. I will remember this time with pride", - she wrote on Instagram (which belongs to the recognized extremist company Meta and is illegal in Russia)"

The parenthesis is part of the quote.

Reminds me of all those Chinese officials who used to complain about "Western Censorship" on because they had labels on their accounts.
removed those labels AND the app is still illegal in China. A win for the authoritaria...uh...I mean "Freedom of Speech."

No country should buy Swiss weapons before they change this policy. The ability to transfer weapons to each other in times of need has proven to be a strategic requirement.

Yes, it was a shame that the ammunition production for the Gepard was in Switzerland. I hope we all learned a lesson from that. But they've worked around that restriction now, but it shouldn't have been that way in the first place.

Much of the analysis of the reshuffle in the Russian government seems to be missing how much it is about coup-proofing Putin's regime rather than making smart decisions for Russia.

The salad got its name from its chef, a Tijuana restauranteur who whipped up the dressing to accompany the green salad and dried bread he happened to have in the kitchen.

putin may have a particularly bad, unhygienic hot dog named after him and prigozhin.

Russia has intensified the nuclear rhetoric, but that does not mean that we are close to nuclear war. In this video I discuss why is unlikely to use nuclear weapons in . The short version is that it would make the situation even worse for Russia itself, and that it wouldn't lead to victory.

Transcript is included in the link for those who prefer to read rather than watching the video.

Smartphones play an important role in modern warfare. In this video I have a conversation with Matthew Ford from the Swedish Defence University about the ways that soldiers use smartphones on the battlefield, and how we are seeing a new level of participatory warfare where civilians can be personally involved in the war fighting through their digital devices.

Now that Ukraine's shortage of weapons and ammunition is about to get solved, there is increased attention on the two other big problems on the frontline: Lack of fortifications and a manpower deficit.

In this edition of the Logic of War newsletter I discuss these two problems. Since I won't be publishing a regular video on YouTube this week, I decided to make access free for all on this one. https://www.logicofwar.com/ukranies-three-big-problems/

anderspuck,
@anderspuck@krigskunst.social avatar

@t_mkdf The Russians having bespoke detachments for building fortifications is probably also one of the reasons why they started to build so soon. It did not demand an active choice because these units had nothing else to do.

anderspuck,

@kikeriffs Intelligence sharing probably continued despite the aid package being delayed, but my understanding is that it is increased now with military advisors in the country.

I think both Ukraine and the West have now understood that it will be a long war and that there are no quick fixes. So in that sense I don’t think there is so much need for a plan C. It’s more about many efforts that must pull the same way for a long time with small adjustments along the way.

The turmoil in the Middle East has led to many speculations about the extent to which Russia and Iran are coordinating their actions. So I decided to make a video about the relationship between #Russia, #China, and #Iran.

This time I am linking to a post on my new Ghost site. Some people have requested that I post transcripts of my videos, which seemed like a good idea. So if you prefer to "read" my videos instead of watching them, you can sign up for the newsletter.

Russian state media continue to push the explanation that the arrested terrorists did it for money. Apparently, the salary for becoming a mass murderer was USD 5400.
They don't mention ISIS with a single word.

On a sidenote, it has always puzzled me that Russians in uniform so often wear masks on TV even in situations where it makes no operational sense. Are they not proud to be associated with their service?

ditol,
@ditol@freiburg.social avatar

@anderspuck @t_mkdf @Flies4no1 Ukrainian bloggers and "experts" came out with the FSB hypothesis pretty much immediately. GUR MO pretty much immediately declared the mass shooting be a "provocation" by Putin's special services.

anderspuck,
@anderspuck@krigskunst.social avatar

@ditol @t_mkdf @Flies4no1 Yes, it was an automatic reaction that they came out with before anyone had any clue about what’s going on. We also still see a lot of people who want this to be a false flag attack, because it fits some picture they have about the Russians.

anderspuck, to random
@anderspuck@krigskunst.social avatar

What to make of the fact that the arrested suspects from the attack in Moscow speak Russian and claim they did it for money? They don’t look or sound like fearless ISIS warriors.

gareth,
@gareth@toot.bike avatar

@anderspuck

For sure it is foggy.

I was just thinking about what it could it be. Maybe too many possibilities to list.

The only facts at the moment is the US knew something and thought it was serious enough to issue a public warning and then that it happened.

I'm willing to wait for more reasoned analysis.

Best,

Gareth

mok0,
@mok0@mastodon.online avatar

@sarahbeck @anderspuck Absolutely. It's exactly the same playbook Putin used in the Dubrovka Theater attack in 2002, where Putin's antiterror corps killed 40 alleged "terrorists" and 132 ordinary theater guests. After that Putin had great popular support for his war in Chechnia. Same ruler fcking 22 years later, same old playbook.

anderspuck,
@anderspuck@krigskunst.social avatar

@mok0 @sarahbeck Why did they stage the 2017 Saint Petersburg metro bombing, then?
You should not overestimate the competence of the FSB.
