When are you part of "the rich"?

Feel free to comment if you think the line isn't on here and it should e.g be lower or higher.

If you have (in assets or cash):

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

Note, technically speaking if you select the first option, many average working class people that just happen to have a house, that cannot simply e.g go out and buy an expensive car with that money, will be considered part of "the rich"

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

And also note that, the truly filthy rich like Musk, Bezos, etc, are all in the 100s of billions, so they're off this chart by 2 orders of magnitude.

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@eseilt if you bought a house as little as 8 years ago, you're still paying the same mortgage and don't feel rich, but you easily own 100s of thousands in "asset".

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

some further interesting metrics:

To be in the top 1% it depends on the country how much you need to have in 'net wealth', in the USA it's about 5 million, in Monaco it's about 12 million, in China it's about 1 million (see image).

But the average WAGES of the top % are:
Top 0.1% of Earners $3,312,693
Top 1% of Earners $819,324
Top 5% of Earners $335,891
Top 10% of Earners $167,639

So I think you could be in the top 1% of assets/cash, but not even make it to the top 10% in terms of wages?

Oh boy had a very awkward conversation with a client

I was trying to do my best to ask as many questions as I could to ascertain what they needed, but they kept being terse and clipped in their replies

I had nothing to go on in the notes I had written so I had to tell them I couldnโ€™t do anything because they wouldnโ€™t answer my questions =_=

Then they hung up lol

@yassie_j imho this just goes on the list of "people that don't respect customer service don't deserve help", it's entirely in people's own interest to give the right information, it's not like you don't want to help so it can hardly be blamed on you ๐Ÿคท

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@haasyuu the Dutch monarchy makes me feel two things, they're mostly kinda genuine people who try to do good things overall but there are also big asshats like prins Bernard which has entire wiki articles and law proposals to his name for his tendency to use his royal income to buy houses and real estate, he has like 600 houses in Amsterdam alone, and also in general idk if they should be having/making as much as this, monarchy could also be a bunch more modern and less excessive tbh.

@jo@wetdry.world avatar

Good morning yet again!

Today I found out my #SmartHome thermostat hasn't been working because of an ISP outage in the area. While I am all for #NetNeutrality, this one takes the cake for me; how can people be expected to have functioning smart houses if they keep prioritising internet leeches (such as "self-hosters") over actual customers, overloading their networks?

I'm on the phone with my provider right now, the waiting times might take a while, but this is something that's gotta be said.

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@jo ISP skill issue. you can totally have self hosters and not effing kill your network, it's called QOS and maybe some level of redundancy, instead of oversubscribing a line to hell and then going surprised_pikachu.jpg when normal average users watching some netflix already overload the entire thing. This one shouldn't be blamed on self hosters, they can not fix this for you.

Project Astra is so incredibly scifi, just wow, such a step closer to having one of those realtime AIs from games that really act like a companion and help you understand the world, and I'd imagine this would help low vision users a lot, but also combined with the 2 million tokens and what not else this could easily be really really close to a personal Iron man Jarvis-style AI

Hey everyone, out of curiosity, how much do you spend on a , , (or Windows) cloud instance for your side project? Also, please state the provider.

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@nixCraft ~143.95 a month at Hetzner (small statuscheck/frontend container + biggest storagebox + a server with 4x16TB disks which is currently running this mastodon server and other stuff like Gitlab, Matrix, Seafile, Nextcloud, etc)

Been thinking of moving elsewhere, and already have a full copy of everything locally, though also kinda hoping to have fiber here soon, if all goes well I should have symmetric 10gbit to my home which will easily let me host my own things on my own solar power :)

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@luis I specifically do not host email even at hetzner because there is just no way to guarantee any delivery if you're not hotmail/gmail/whatever, I just use different things. I don't think it would be much harder to host email at home, you just have to make sure you have a static IP because otherwise places like spamhaus will hate you because your DKIM/SPF records constantly stop/statr matching and your IP reputation score doesn't carry over

anthropy, to random
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

Idea: set up a volunteers and donation-run server hosting platform, where you can apply for a free VM or container if you do not have much money to play with these things. Applying & verification would involve a short conversation with someone to get an idea of the situation and the needs, and off it goes. Running a platform like that wouldn't be very different from running a mastodon server in terms of moderation, you'd need to find a bunch of folk that'd help but it could be mostly automated ๐Ÿค”

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@basisbit yea you'd think, but think about it, they'd have to make up a ton of fake stories only to get a single mediocre compute unit for each of those, it'd be very hard to exploit at scale, free tier VMs at big clouds would be far easier a target that you could automate, the fact you have to speak with a human is a huge filter, and the personal interaction also means you can help people much more effectively

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@basisbit that sounds like a ToS issue :P but yea it does come with a bunch of work

Little secret about datacenter water usage: they actually don't USE nearly as much as they report-- they DRAW a lot of water yes, but they'll only cycle it a few times before giving it back, either through waste pipes or other ways, otherwise you get sediment buildup in the pipes and heatexchangers. The average golf course uses far more water, and actually uses it without returning any of it

And the alternative, is to use energy-heavy AC/heatpumps, which due to public outcry, is happening more.

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@vxo yea exactly; water (often 'industrial' water and not potable water but depends on availability) is pumped through large radiators/heatexchangers with fans on the floor, and then blown down a evaporative cooling tower with a big fan. It does evaporate a little water, but not much, most of it's usage is 'blowdown', i.e dumped water, to make sure the water in the system doesn't get too high in minerals, which would cause sediment and calcium buildup inside piping and heat exhangers.

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@kimhoar big datacenters use dozens if not hundreds of megawatts of power, AFAIK there's no way to generate that much electricity onsite without resorting to things like nuclear reactors (is being looked into actually).

The COP (Coefficient Of Performance) with heatpumps ranges from about 2-4 in residential ones to about 5-6 for commercial ones such as used in datacenters. A COP of 6 means you need 1kw for every 6kw of heat you're moving, so even the most efficient ones require many megawatts.

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@kimhoar They do often invest into green energy availability in the area though, the geothermal plant Google made in Nevada that feeds two datacenters is a good example of this: https://www.theverge.com/2023/11/28/23972940/google-data-center-geothermal-energy

Have something cursed, because I beer'd my laptop and it made the keyboard sticky. I'm too lazy to take it apart entirely just to fix the keyboard, so I'm just dousing it in distilled water :drgn_3c_evil:

It'll be fine.. Probably. Likely. Hopefully. Only one way to find out and that's Science! :bongo:

Video of a sink where someone is holding a laptop, the keyboard keys aren't working well (sticky) and are making crackling noises, so the laptop (with the full mobo still inside) gets hosed off with distilled water

anthropy, (edited )
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

5 days later, still fine :drgn_sparkle: I think I'm gonna call it a win.

Would I RECOMMEND dousing your laptop in distilled water to fix sticky keys? Probably not, unless you know you can get it completely dry, or know how to take it apart, and understand the implications of doing this.

Does it WORK? The science says yes! :bongo:

edit: a slightly safer option could be isopropylalcohol, but that can also mess with some plastics so YMMV, in either case, caveat emptor
