Hey everyone, out of curiosity, how much do you spend on a #Linux, #FreeBSD, (or Windows) cloud instance for your side project? Also, please state the provider.
@nixCraft about $40/mo total for 4 Linux (Ubuntu/Debian) nodes over at #advinservers. I’ve been pleased with their offerings and there support is great.
@nixCraft I’m paying $0 for Oracle Cloud resources. I’ve offloaded to the cloud the part of home infrastructure including DNS, DHCP and the bunch of worker nodes for the home Kubernetes cluster.
It looks fantastic, but Oracle won’t charge you for the IPSec IKEv2 Site-to-Site VPN in case you will stay within 10 TB/mo of egress traffic.
@nixCraft
I usually go with digital ocean for my projects. I don't have very big demands, usually I go with the $7 basic droplet. I switched over to CloudFlare for my static hosting though.
@nixCraft Digital Ocean, about 15 minutes a month just to test something before putting it on my production server, then I kill the droplet until I need to do it again for something else.
@nixCraft ~143.95 a month at Hetzner (small statuscheck/frontend container + biggest storagebox + a server with 4x16TB disks which is currently running this mastodon server and other stuff like Gitlab, Matrix, Seafile, Nextcloud, etc)
Been thinking of moving elsewhere, and already have a full copy of everything locally, though also kinda hoping to have fiber here soon, if all goes well I should have symmetric 10gbit to my home which will easily let me host my own things on my own solar power :)
@luis I specifically do not host email even at hetzner because there is just no way to guarantee any delivery if you're not hotmail/gmail/whatever, I just use different things. I don't think it would be much harder to host email at home, you just have to make sure you have a static IP because otherwise places like spamhaus will hate you because your DKIM/SPF records constantly stop/statr matching and your IP reputation score doesn't carry over
@nixCraft Currently I do not spend much time on my VPS, hosted at Hetzner DE. I'm considering to upgrade to another OS in the future, so I'd say I spent up to an hour per month on it.
