Locally, there's a proposal to remove a path on a long bridge for most days of the week, and convert it into a car breakdown lane. There doesn't appear to be any evidence that this would improve traffic, but it will require those who would have walked/cycled/rolled to take a 40 mile detour.

Q3. Have you ever seen cycle infrastructure removed or threatened? How was it preserved, or if it was removed, what were the reasons, and what were the effects?

Hey this is a periodic reminder that if you know if any new rides, let me know, as I am compiling a list: https://ascentale.com/a-list-of-all-of-the-bike-buses-to-school-that-we-know-about

Hopefully we'll be able to help Bike Bus organizers collaborate, share ideas, etc.

@agnes wonders about e-bikes vs stairs:

Q8. I’m considering buying an e-bike (instead of a car, so think one-person Costco hauls) and wonder if anyone has insights/advice/tips on living the e-bike + no elevator top floor apartment dweller life 😅

I can move but I want to stay in the suburbs so an elevator is a tough ask. Should I try to secure a storage/garage? Is regular bike parking secure enough? Do I start powerlifting now so I can take on a 50lb bike?

Welcome to the March 29th BikeNite! Thanks for joining, and I hope we all enjoy chatting about cycle stuff! Feel free to answer whenever at your convenience. Anyone can join, now or later. Reply to what you like, and boost for visibility.

We'll start out with our introduction:

Q1. Where are you posting from today? If you feel comfortable sharing, tell us a little bit about what you do for a living, something else that you do that's non-cycle-related (hobbies, etc).

@bikescape asks about multimodal navigation:

Q5. Are there any route mappers that are able to chain bike and bus trips? I was trying to route a trip using bike trails and buses with bike racks along Cape Cod and it wasn’t an easy task. (It also overestimates the time to ride along trails, making bike trips look a lot longer than they really are.)

Hello people! If you've got any questions for Friday, please share them in reply to this post, or add the tag.

We have a couple of questions already, but can use some more. Any that we don't get to will still be included in a future BikeNite!

(Next BikeNite, a Q&A discussion, is Friday at 4pm Pacific time!)

Hey community, our next Q&A is coming up on Friday at 4pm Pacific time. Reply with any questions you'd like to have added to the queue. We've already got some, but could use a few more if you've got questions.

You can add the BikeNitePQ tag and/or just reply to this thread to make finding proposed questions easier.

Or if you'd previously asked a question and it got lost, it's okay to remind me!

@MartyCormack asks:

Q4. Most cyclists drive motor vehicles at least sometimes, and some more frequently.

How has your cycling affected the way you drive? Are you slower and more careful? Do you do anything differently when encountering cyclists on the streets?

@sam asked a question a while back that I know I'll enjoy seeing the answers to:

Q2. What's the heaviest, largest, or most ridiculous cargo you've ever carried on your bicycle? Bonus points for including a picture (with proper description in the alt text).

starts at 4pm Pacific. We ask cycle-y questions for community discussion. I post questions w/ Q1, Q2, Q3; if you answer w/ A1, A2, A3, etc, it's easier to match.

Tag if you want your answer to be more discoverable; follow it to see questions & replies in your feed. Boost & reply to replies to keep the discussion going.

(You can follow BikeNiteQ tag so questions are easier to find, but you don't need to include this in your answers)

Welcome to the first BikeNite of Spring, 2024! (or Autumn for those in the Southern Hemisphere) Thanks for joining, and I hope we all enjoy chatting about cycle stuff! Feel free to answer whenever at your convenience. Anyone can join, now or later. Reply to what you like, and boost for visibility.

We'll start out with our introduction:

Q1. Where are you posting from today? What does the change in season mean for you with respect to cycling?

@ascentale@sfba.social avatar

Q2. Do you have any cycling jokes? Let's hear them.

Next question is from @ClimateJenny

Q2. I saw a post (in German) about packing a “space blanket” with a bike first aid kit. What do you generally carry with them at all times while biking?

@ascentale@sfba.social avatar

That's it for now; thanks for asking, answering, reading and discussing! There are still a few posts in the queue, I can ask them next week.

Reply, boost and favorite toots to keep it going. I hope you've enjoyed this and found new friends to follow. (Also, you can follow , if you haven't)

We'll do it again next Friday! Reply with new questions for next week (add the BikeNitePQ tag for visibility) and let me know if there are any adjustments you'd like to see.

This next question is from @edd about fixing a flat and what tools to carry when things are wet:

Q8. I recently ran into a small inconvenience and I've found a hole in my travel kit: a spare tube for wet days when patches just won't stick (or the tube is properly done). What's everyone's necessary road kit when a pickup isn't an option?

The last question is maybe oddly specific and I've wondered about this for a while:

Q8. Have you ever cycled up to and used a drive-through? How did it go?

(I assume drive-throughs less common outside of the USA?)

Call for questions - it’s this Friday at 4pm Pacific time!

(Thanks for the questions earlier @MartyCormack !)

Reply with any questions you'd like me to add to the discussion on Friday. Or let me know if you'd like to host sometime. If you've asked a question before and I didn't ask it, feel free to remind me in case I missed it 😅

Cold weather is on the mind in the Northern Hemisphere and @donburnside has a question about what to wear to stay warm.

Q2. What’s your cold weather fit? Since I’m the only person that won’t ride if it’s too windy, too cold or over 100f/38c, I’m asking you for help. Links to your favs gear appreciated!

Mostly concerned with keep my core comfortable, including my shoulders, upper arms and neck.

@emilymhorsman has a question about transporting stuff by cycle:

Q7. What are folks’ favourite bags and ways to carry things on bikes? Front or rear?

ascentale, to random
@ascentale@sfba.social avatar

Most are friendly, but I have felt a little uncertain while riding by dogs in the past; my partner has been aggressively chased by one. @MartyCormack asks:

Q5. In the past 9 months I've been bitten twice by off leash dogs while riding my bike; one was quite painful. The prior year an off leash dog caused me to crash my bike; I fortunately escaped injury.

What techniques do you use to protect yourself from threatening dogs while riding your bike?

Next question is from @glightly about how to bring more people into cycling:

Q4. For those who've been advocates and worn out their shoes going to meetings, what would your advice be to people who are new to cycling, don't feel safe doing it where they live, and want to get involved enabling people to take fewer car trips?

Especially if there are not already people locally doing this work. Where should they start?
