Apple has nothing but trouble in China. iPhone shipments in China surged 52% in April, Bloomberg reported, citing data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology.

@asymco After this week’s Microsoft Co-pilot PC launch, it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on 21st century “Innovators Dilemmas”.

Intel dismissing ARM.
Apple dismissing deep AI.
Toyota dismissing Electric drive trains.
The Car Industry dismissing micromobility.

Is Apple misdirecting $$$ into boondoggles like the Apple Car & Vision?

Are we back when Wright Brothers were humble bicycle manufacturers, and their innovations were on the cusp of revolutionizing transport & warfare?

asymco,
@asymco@mastodon.social avatar

@nick_rogers Apple is not dismissing AI. Deep or whatever variants. AI is sustaining technology and Apple will probably benefit from it more than any other company. I’ve said this several times. [So are electric cars which makes Toyota the most likely winner in that category as well]

@asymco@mastodon.social avatar

@nick_rogers thanks, I will cover in a future podcast. Batteries are an enabler and you can see them in many contexts. For example study the tools industry and how it was affected by “power packs” all of which are proprietary interfaces to batteries. How did this lead to consolidation and line expansion? Or the outboard motor market and how it’s changing rapidly (see e-Propulsion vs Torqueedo). Automotive and computing have also changed but disruption is a very tall hurdle.

The name “iPod” came from a freelance copywriter, Vinnie Chieco. As soon as he saw the pure white device, Chieco thought of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey and the immortal line: “Open the pod bay doors, Hal.” Steve Jobs was talking a lot about the iMac and iLife, so adding the “i” prefix was a natural thing to do. Jobs initially rejected the iPod name, but later came around to it.

Apple touted the company’s growth in emerging markets. That includes an all-time revenue record in Indonesia, where Cook visited last month during a tour of Southeast Asia.

“These are markets where our market share is low,” Cook said. “The populations are large and growing. And our products are really making a lot of progress.”

Apple is on its way to 2 billion customers.

The only question I asked early in the crypto era was how would crypto lower the cost of international transfers. I never got a good answer. The costs remain ridiculously high and hurt those who can least afford them. If it cannot help I this area then so long crypto. https://www.bbc.com/news/business-68817110

@freediverx If sold in the US, they will probably be made in Mexico. If so, prices should be no more than 10% higher

asymco,
@asymco@mastodon.social avatar

@freediverx there is no shortage of economical cars that could be sold even in the US. However, the new car market in the US competes with a used car market in the US. New cars moved up market abandoning the mid side the mid price market achieve new car has to compete with a very well appointedslightly used car. New car buyers are only the wealthy today. They are not interested in cheap cars.

Musk’s 72-hour posting spree on X, in which he raged against the “woke mind virus” and said its “goal” is “the destruction of America,” agreed with “Fake News is the Enemy of the People,” said the press is “basically the Biden cheering squad,” accused the news media of “lying” about Donald Trump’s “blood bath” comments, called NPR a “nice version of Pravda,” Google “manipulate[s] their search results with left wing bias,” and that if there is not a “red wave” in November, “America is doomed.”
