J'ai (enfin) mis à jour le PC de ma mère de Elementary 5.1 à 7.1 (c'est à dire, réinstallé complètement). Le PC est désormais super lent, c'est flippant. Pas trop sûr de quoi faire là.

"In fact, the solidarity encampments on campuses are student-organized and led, with Palestinian students at front and center, and a disproportionately large presence of Jewish students too. It is students, over 1,000 of them, who have faced arrest."

We should all be proud of these kids.

Well done. Facebook (sorry, "Meta"): "Reality Labs has now lost more than $45 billion since the end of 2020, when Meta first began reporting the business segment separately."

Yes, billion with a B.

That's an insane amount of money. I don't even want to go into the whole "think how many hospitals could have been funded with that money".

https://www.cnbc.com/2024/04/24/metas-reality-labs-posts-3point85-billion-loss-in-first-quarter.html

On the upside, they are consistent in their idiocy and i was wrong to say they'd quietly stopped investing in it. Nope, still going.

Really? It's 2024, i'm pretty sure this is a behaviour that should be enforced by your mail reader rather than me artificially breaking
lines just
to
fit an ancient
custom.

Also, how many pixels wide is your screen? I mean, it's up to you if you want to read text on the visual equivalent of a pocket pack of tissues at the end of the day i suppose.

Location services in are eerily precise. As in, to a few metres. Even when tunnelling all traffic through a Wireguard VPN exiting in a different country.

As someone still a bit scarred by Enemy of the State even 25 years later, that freaks me out.

And a cursory search has not reassured me much. It uses Mozilla location services, that much is clear, but how does it still provide such a precise location when traffic is tunnelled?

https://help.gnome.org/users/gnome-help/stable/privacy-location.html.en provides no info or explanation.

"Funny": the only "feature" of Amazon's supermarkets, Amazon Fresh, was that you could "just walk out" and all their clever magic AI would charge you for what you picked from the shelves.

Huge surprise, it relied on over a 1000 people in India. And it was of course the digital equivalent of having a bouncer follow you around the store taking notes of everything you pick up and put down. Lovely stuff.

Yet again, AI snakeoil and –really– microworkers making it possible.

"We know that you are waiting to speak to an agent and will put you through as soon as we can."

The level of disrepair of (yes, that is a serious official name), the UK unemployment agency is maddening and depressing.

Their automated phone system is, of course, unclear and at least half designed to make people give up before they reach what they need.

I've currently been on hold for over 30 min just to be able to talk to someone and update them about my situation.

So, VMWare, a company that powers the IT of many organisations via its virtualisation products was acquired by Broadcom in November 2023.

Turns out this was not a seamless transition: Broadcom quickly upended VMWare's pricing model, trying to force loads of customers into much more expensive deals (100 to 300% price increase!). VMWare users are, understandably, furious.

But this may well backfire, as people are now looking at alternatives, and of course free and open source ones. We'll see.

In 2009, the NHS bought thousands of expensive hardware-encrypted USB drives, "SafeSticks", from a company called BlockMaster.
https://www.theregister.com/2009/06/16/review_storage_usb_blockmaster_safestick/

How surprised would you be to hear that the BlockMaster website and Twitter account look like they were all but abandoned in 2011?

Ah, and the promised Linux version of the OS-side software needed to decrypt the drives never materialised, from what i can tell.

I wonder how many of the 250 000 drives the NHS bought are still in use.

Wait, so opensource.org is the website for the Open Source Initiative (OSI), opensource.com is a general FOSS blog sponsored by Red Hat, but opensource.net is the blog linked to opensource.org?

Well i'm glad we sorted that out.

A lot of people seem to think that companies like Google are highly rational.

But their obsession with AI at the cost of destroying the product they are known for, search – which reminds us of their obsession for "building a social network" (cf. Google Plus) – and the current debacle with Gemini not being able to answer basic requests shows they are in fact very much driven by emotion, mainly fear.

Unsurprisingly, far right idiots think it's because Google is "woke".

I'm starting to get curious about Plan 9 from Bell Labs. Beyond its wonderful name, just scratching the surface i can see it had some really interesting ideas and concepts.

Did anyone here ever use it? What was it like? I'd like to understand if some of its ideas made their way to other pieces of free and open source software we use today?

This music festival in Portugal is being advertised in the London tube. There's no reasonable way to get from London to Lisbon other than by flight.

Apparently, neither the urgency of curtailing our emissions of greenhouse gases nor the shitshow that a 2° rise in global temperatures – which we are well on the path to – is clear to everyone.

Broadening support in Australian politics for Julian Assange, calling for the end of his incarceration.

At the same time, extradition is nearing and there's now possibly only one more opportunity to prevent it.

In the meantime, he remains in Belmarsh, a prison for Category A prisoners who “pose the most threat to the public, the police or national security”. In 2019 the UN’s Special Rapporteur on torture condemned this detention.
