"In fact, the solidarity encampments on campuses are student-organized and led, with Palestinian students at front and center, and a disproportionately large presence of Jewish students too. It is students, over 1,000 of them, who have faced arrest."

We should all be proud of these kids.

Well done. Facebook (sorry, "Meta"): "Reality Labs has now lost more than $45 billion since the end of 2020, when Meta first began reporting the business segment separately."

Yes, billion with a B.

That's an insane amount of money. I don't even want to go into the whole "think how many hospitals could have been funded with that money".

https://www.cnbc.com/2024/04/24/metas-reality-labs-posts-3point85-billion-loss-in-first-quarter.html

On the upside, they are consistent in their idiocy and i was wrong to say they'd quietly stopped investing in it. Nope, still going.

Completely mind boggling to me that we threw away 5 billion phones in 2022.

Some of those could have been repurposed: smartphones are hardly innovating any more. The most eco-friendly phone is the one you already have.

We need to publicly support communities like @postmarketOS who work on making these phones repurposable, and @gnome that work on making a polished mobile experience that serves people, not creepy corporations.

axx,
@axx@mstdn.fr avatar

@thibaultamartin @postmarketOS @gnome We need a legal obligation to release of all relevant code and schematics for all chipsets that are no longer supported by the manufacturer.

I'm still on an old Pixel 2, running an "ancient"¹ GrapheneOS. I replaced the battery, but it works fine.

It's also a security risk, which i'm well aware of. This shouldn't be the case.

  1. I hate how the Internet distorts our relationship to time, i should probably write something about that one of these days.

Location services in are eerily precise. As in, to a few metres. Even when tunnelling all traffic through a Wireguard VPN exiting in a different country.

As someone still a bit scarred by Enemy of the State even 25 years later, that freaks me out.

And a cursory search has not reassured me much. It uses Mozilla location services, that much is clear, but how does it still provide such a precise location when traffic is tunnelled?

https://help.gnome.org/users/gnome-help/stable/privacy-location.html.en provides no info or explanation.

@organicmaps hello! Did the button to remove a POI get removed? It feels like every other time i look for it (tap POI, expand bottom drawer) it's gone. It drives me a bit mad.

@organicmaps Yes, i mean edit place. It's just not there when i tap a POI. (I am logged in to OSM). This is on Android, latest from F-Droid.

@organicmaps I can see that 2024.03.31-8 is not yet on F-Droid, where 2024.03.05-4-FDroid is the latest. But so you can confirm the Edit Place is gone in 2024.03.05-4-FDroid?

"Funny": the only "feature" of Amazon's supermarkets, Amazon Fresh, was that you could "just walk out" and all their clever magic AI would charge you for what you picked from the shelves.

Huge surprise, it relied on over a 1000 people in India. And it was of course the digital equivalent of having a bouncer follow you around the store taking notes of everything you pick up and put down. Lovely stuff.

Yet again, AI snakeoil and –really– microworkers making it possible.

"Enshittification" isn't just a way of describing the symptoms of platform decay: it's also a theory of the mechanism of decay - the means by which platforms get shittier and shittier until they are a giant pile of shit.

@dalias @DavidM_yeg @pluralistic All very neat stuff.

Also, "boom and bust" is – shock, horror – part of the capitalist playbook. I remember being a bit aghast when during the 2008 financial crisis @CrimethInc were the only folks vocally reminding people that seeing companies fail was, in fact, part of capitalism. When you need anarchists to remind you of basic tenets of capitalism, you know something is very wrong.

axx,

@DavidM_yeg @dalias @pluralistic @CrimethInc This conversation has just bought back to mind this line i read many moons ago, and must try and find the origin of: "I'll believe corporations are people the day Texas executes one".

The level of disrepair of (yes, that is a serious official name), the UK unemployment agency is maddening and depressing.

Their automated phone system is, of course, unclear and at least half designed to make people give up before they reach what they need.

I've currently been on hold for over 30 min just to be able to talk to someone and update them about my situation.

So, VMWare, a company that powers the IT of many organisations via its virtualisation products was acquired by Broadcom in November 2023.

Turns out this was not a seamless transition: Broadcom quickly upended VMWare's pricing model, trying to force loads of customers into much more expensive deals (100 to 300% price increase!). VMWare users are, understandably, furious.

But this may well backfire, as people are now looking at alternatives, and of course free and open source ones. We'll see.

In 2009, the NHS bought thousands of expensive hardware-encrypted USB drives, "SafeSticks", from a company called BlockMaster.
https://www.theregister.com/2009/06/16/review_storage_usb_blockmaster_safestick/

How surprised would you be to hear that the BlockMaster website and Twitter account look like they were all but abandoned in 2011?

Ah, and the promised Linux version of the OS-side software needed to decrypt the drives never materialised, from what i can tell.

I wonder how many of the 250 000 drives the NHS bought are still in use.
