GNOME is an awesome desktop environment. The minimalism is very appealing and the way it is designed to keep out of your way as much as possible is just great!

Except there seems to be one major oversight... notifications.

These things pop out at you, no matter how important or unimportant, distract you, and occupy part of very useful screen area. (In GNOME, notifications appear in top-middle)

This is extremely annoying. There is a way to somewhat work around this by turning on "Do not disturb" but it's not a solution. Because with it turned on, the white dot that indicates that there are new notifications is now replaced with a crossed off bell icon...

I would be great if the white dot was shown only, without any "pop up" notifications.

The "apolitical", "we should just focus on the code!", "FOSS is not political", "inclusivity is discrimination!" people need to get kicked out of FOSS projects. Fuck off with your "apolitical" nonsense.

why am i not surprised to see https://atomicpoet.org running a fucking SOAPBOX fork lmao

aylamz,
@aylamz@cyberpunk.lol avatar

@vantablack I've heard that Soapbox was developed by fascists or something, but what's wrong with using something that's a fork of it?

@aylamz@cyberpunk.lol avatar

I don't like Mastodon. It "feels to corporate" to me. It's way too dominant in the Fediverse, to the point where the Mastodon client-server API has become the de-facto standard: there are no Fediverse or Activitypub apps, it's (basically) all Mastodon apps.

It's written in fucking Ruby out of all the languages... (I don't like Ruby)
It's development happens on Microsoft Github... (I also don't like Microsoft or Github)

I wish there was something better but everything else also kind of sucks...

aylamz,
@aylamz@cyberpunk.lol avatar

@vantablack can't you just use kde connect?

@vantablack@cyberpunk.lol avatar

loving the librem 5 more and more with each passing minute even tho it is objectively inconvenient as fuck to use lmao

@vantablack how's the battery life and performance on librem 5? I have a PinePhone and it's really slow and battery life is very meh. (still a cool device though)

For users of any operating system, not just , what might keep you from trying/running an desktop? If you are already running one, why did you choose it?

@Natanox @vwbusguy These are the new-ish names for openSUSE MicroOS GNOME and KDE spins I think?

I've been using my Pulse 14 Gen3 from @tuxedocomputers for about a month now. Few thoughts:

  • The battery life is OK. I get about 6 hours of battery life with full charge. Have to charge about twice a day.
  • CPU performance is really good. Outperforms my previous i5-8600 desktop PC. Haven't done anything GPU intensive yet.
  • Screen is pretty bright. Even 50% is enough in a brightly lit room.
  • Keyboard is nice, though it doesn't seem to have backlight even though the product page said it does? Not too important as I wouldn't use it anyway.
  • The tuxedocomputers.com website is quite awful. Some parts of the website literally don't load sometimes on Firefox. Everything seems to work fine on Chromium though... Also it doesn't remember the language preference and doesn't seem to have a dark mode.
  • A 10GB myTuxedo code (Tuxedo's Nextcloud instance) I got with my laptop didn't work. It said that the code had already been used which was weird. Wasn't planning on using it anyway so whatever but still weird.

@vantablack The theme is cool but not all of UI seems to be themed yet 😀
