So the university encouraged the students to build this tool, and then punished them for it? Can it even get worse 🤦

Just learnt how to use in ! :emacs: 🚀

badrihippo,
@badrihippo@fosstodon.org avatar

@aru hmm let me actually try 😉

More "how to" than explanation though:

🔑 Press Ctrl-X, Ctrl-( the second one is open parenthesis

⌨️ Make whatever keystrokes you want to record

🔒 Press Ctrl-X, Ctrl-) to save

🤖 Press Ctrl-X, E whenever you want to run the same keystroke sequence, and then keep pressing E to run it once more!

The reason that worked for me though is I've seen people use keyboard macros before (albeit on vi, not emacs 😅)

badrihippo,
@badrihippo@fosstodon.org avatar

@aru yep, that's essentially it 🙂

And it leaves the cursor wherever it ended up. So one gotcha to watch out for is, if your key combination needs to start (for example) at the beginning of a line, then make sure to put it back at the beginning of a line when you end it (ready for the next round of replay) ➰

There are also ways to name the macro and save it, etc., but I'm yet to get to that stage...

Sigh, website for one of the local indie radio stations is now behind "Deflect," a Cloudflare-like DDoS protection thing. Which means their show podcast feeds now serve HTML "Verifying if your connection is secure" pages (which require a cookie store and JavaScript to pass) instead of RSS.

Hate these things so much.

badrihippo,

@ieure if It has Cloudfare it's not a website ⛔

(If it has something like Cloudfare then something that isn't like a website)

@yogthos yes, I'm yet to find an LLM that doesn't have this bias. Shows the power of propaganda?

badrihippo,
@badrihippo@fosstodon.org avatar

@yogthos ...because LLMs are essentially a regurgitation of the media they're trained on 🤖

What I meant, though, was that all the AI I've seen seem to have this specific bias of being very vague and "it's complicated" when asked about anything relating to Palestine. Which perhaps tells us where the biases of the majority of media lie (or at least lay)? 🇵🇸

Love how learning OCaml and Elixir completely changed the way I write JavaScript lol

badrihippo,
@badrihippo@fosstodon.org avatar

@janvhs happening to me too, though in my case it happened because of Clojure and OCaml (and right now Elm!)

badrihippo,
@badrihippo@fosstodon.org avatar

@janvhs no idea if my project is a good fit, but it's a frontend-only program (a game inspired by "find the invisible cow") so I was like why not ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I'm not used to thinking in this way when designing interfaces but Elm keeps nudging me back when I go off so it's a fun struggle 🧗

@janvhs ahh okay. Well, hope you get a chance some time!

How long have you been on the fediverse?

badrihippo,
@badrihippo@fosstodon.org avatar

@evan completed 5 years on in Jan but I chose the next option because I identify more with having been 6 years :fedi:

(I was on before that, so if you count that as Fediverse it is indeed "6 to 10 years")

The twitter block issue is caused by Firfox filters. Firefox is working on a fix. The announcement reads as: Hey folks, we are aware of the Twitter issue and our team is working on a fix at the moment.

In the meantime, disabling Enhanced Tracking Protection or changing it from Strict should fix this issue temporarily. Here's how to do that: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/enhanced-tracking-protection-firefox-desktop#w_what-to-do-if-a-site-seems-broken

badrihippo,
@badrihippo@fosstodon.org avatar

@nixCraft isn't this Twitter's problem? Why is Firefox doing anything about it at all?

badrihippo,
@badrihippo@fosstodon.org avatar

@ferricoxide @nixCraft yeah, it unfortunately makes more sense practically, even if it doesn't make sense ideologically 😣

Anyway, it provides some consolation to know that it's a small step from "X-faithful" to "ex-faithful" 😉 :deadbird:

Do we have a for public repos? :git:

Right now my "default" is to go to GitHub, and then maybe GitLab and Codeberg...but that leaves out all the other hosts out there. Once happens we'll need it even more :fedi:

(By the way, I say "git" because that's where most code is, but if other kinds of repos are supported, even better! 🔍 )

badrihippo,
@badrihippo@fosstodon.org avatar

@farooqkz same; I'll keep it on my list to do someday. Although if anyone's up for stealing the idea in the meantime they're welcome 🕵️ :git:

badrihippo,
@badrihippo@fosstodon.org avatar

@farooqkz my projects are always "is it even going to happen" so I haven't got to the stage of thinking which ones are better 😅 what you say makes sense though! And now that you mention it, the things I've worked with over a period of time (software or otherwise) have usually ended up being very satisfying 😇

"The consensus opinion on the fediverse is more representative of public opinion than the consensus on siloed social networks."

badrihippo,
@badrihippo@fosstodon.org avatar

@evan I didn't know either way, but I went with "Somewhat agree" because personally I'd be more comfortable expressing opinions here than there...although I later realised that the Fediverse may not be (yet) a representative sample of the public 🌏

Anyway, looking at the results so far, the consensus opinion of the fediverse seems to somewhat disagree with the statement that the consensus opinion of the fediverse is more representative of public opinion 🌀🤪

@nekohayo@mastodon.social avatar

I have a huge amount of appreciation for the fact that Nautilus / can seamlessly pattern-select, batch-rename and move files both from its treeview and from search results… all with keyboard shortcuts! Extremely useful to clean up filenames.

Today, in someone else's messy folders, I was able to cleanly rename everything and eliminate at least 40 duplicates in a directory that contained over 180 files, most of which were in the wrong locations.

badrihippo,
@badrihippo@fosstodon.org avatar

@nekohayo @antoniof wait why didn't I know about this before?? ! 😮
