I watched Abigail last night and I feel like this has been done before. The titles escape me at the moment but I have seen more than one movie where kidnappers end up finding out that it's not really a child they are holding for ransom. @horror

@Well_Worth_A_Read @horror just this morning, I read a review in which the movie was criticized for spoilering itself via trailers and promos, making the first part of the movie pointless. It was also criticized for repeating other titles, as you noted. They were mainly referring to "Ready or Not", which was probably produced by the same team(?)

@KentuckyConjurer @stina_marie I'm not a fan of Jessica Lange, but overall I really enjoyed the series. I think Joan Crawford's may be an impossible part to play for any actress, anyway. Her stage persona was so intricate, and it feels like at times there was no one behind her mask, and other times there were several different people underneath.

@KentuckyConjurer @stina_marie the funniest part about the whole Mommie Dearest debacle is the big, public blessing Crawford herself had given to Dunaway years before. Joan couldn't have imagined that one day Faye would have become a camp icon portraying her as a borderline monster 🥲

What are some of the really unique, out there uses for wearable and watch apps that you don't see in the mainstream? Weird, strange, and clever uses for a screen and sensors on your wrist?

My husband and I have repeatedly tried to explain to his mother that the gifts she gives us for holidays/birthdays are excessive, unneeded, and just causes us to spend a lot of time re-homing the stuff we can't use so it doesn't start filling the house from floor to ceiling. We've tried explaining how wasteful and uncomfortable this is for us. We've tried assuring her that instead of giving us ANY gifts (being adults with disposable income, if we want something, we can just get it for ourselves), she can just TELL us she loves us, and that's enough.

Nope. Somehow the conversation ALWAYS ends up focused not on the boundaries we're trying to express, but on how it's hurtful for us to have those boundaries at all, because gift-giving is her Love Language (TM) and she can't help it!

I don't think she realizes how manipulative she's being - she doesn't have a scheming or malicious bone in her body. Doesn't make it any LESS manipulative, though.

@Crazypedia @Writch I've got a couple of relatives like that and, in their case, it's 100% evident that this is not a love language, at least not a healthy one. Their gifts are ALWAYS wrong, bizzare or inappropriate. It is clear that they don't know/care at all about what the gift recipient actually needs or wants. The gift just needs to cost a certain amount of money.
Their logic is not "I love you, so I'm giving you a gift that you may like/need"... it's actually "I'm giving you a pricey gift, so you must love me back as much". I've also detected some control-freak vibes behind this attitude ("I'm putting something I choose into your home and you have to keep it") and borderline traits too ("I'm giving you something you don't want and I hope that triggers a bad reaction from you, so that I can play the victim: I'm gifting you stuff while you treat me like shit, poor me").

TL;DR: #Shudder will be getting an ad- supported tier. If they offer this as a cheaper alternative, ok, but if #AMC+ eventually pushes this on current subscribers unless they pay more a la #Amazon, I'm out.

@stina_marie @horror I'm really pissed off at streaming services right now.

The only one I have no problems with, at the moment, is MUBI - the catalog is tiny compared to other services, BUT at least it is curated with thoughtful picks).

Netflix is currently promoting problematic or shitty content while constantly hiking prices. Also, countless valuable series have been killed off after one season for no reason.

Disney's and Paramount's catalogs are a joke in every sense, at least here in Europe, with very few exceptions.

Amazon Prime should win the contest for The Shittiest Experience ever: I can never seem to find what I am looking for. It's impossible to tell which content is recently added without embarking on a shitty quest with the remote. Also, movies are constantly being pulled from the main catalog and put behind a paywall. If that wasn't enough, here in Europe most of the catalog is dubbed with no option to watch the no-dubbed version (why oh why?!). Those additional channels Amazon is pushing? They make no sense. If you like both vintage and contemporary horror, both local and international productions, you are supposed to subscribe to at least 3-4 of those (each costs more than 5$ for month).

Then there's the list of streaming services that are mysteriously not available outside of the US (Shudder is one of them 🤬). Every time I stumble upon some "this content is not available in your area" bullshit, I scream. In 2024, I can videocall someone on the other side of the World BUT I cannot watch your US show, BECAUSE.
At this point, Torrents are my best bet to access content. End of rant, sorry.

I've been scrolling through my Federated Timeline in search for people posting interesting takes on an array of topics (non-Norse mythology/folklore, horror media, witchcraft and occultism, politics, technology, ecology, astronomy, social studies...).
I've already found several, but I'm looking for more.
However, so far, the Federated Timeline is mostly offering:
-pointless posts that seems to be coming from a regurgitated 2010 Facebook nightmare ("Good morning! I'm having breakfast!")
-failed, embarassing, try-hard attempts at jokes that are landing nowhere
-posts so happily nonsensical that must have been written by A.I. (or so I hope).
Since I've been muting half the Fediverse and I'm still not getting what I'm looking for from the Federated Timeline, do you have any suggestion on people worth a follow?
