It very desperately needs a wash, but if ever there were a hat that screamed out ‘nerrrrrrd!’, this is that hat.

Oh wowwwww! Here’s something from a very specific era: a blobby graphite external FireWire CDRW drive.

Huh! Now there’s a blast from the past.

The Guardian: are heat pumps more expensive to run? https://www.theguardian.com/business/article/2024/may/13/are-heat-pumps-more-expensive-to-run-than-gas-boilers

Me, just the other side of my first winter with a heat pump (with oil rather than gas, mind you): no!

The house has been consistently more comfortable, too. Turns out I really like how it runs at a lower temperature longer compared the on-scorchingly-hot-then-off of a gas/oil boiler.

Not to mention how much the cats adore the giant warm-but-never-hot radiators :D

billgoats,
@billgoats@bitbang.social avatar

@penguin42 That is... an unexpectedly awkward question ;) Oil you buy per litre on the open market when your tank runs low, and prices flail around like you wouldn't believe. I'd typically stick £150-200 aside for it each month.

billgoats,
@billgoats@bitbang.social avatar

@penguin42 You’ll have to look that one up. I was also needing to replace a major part of my system as well anyway, so had the decision of whether I’d be tied directly to fossil fuels for another 15-20 years or not too.

Were there any old phones that could browse WAP over wifi?

billgoats,
@billgoats@bitbang.social avatar

@ActionRetro maaaybe the Nokia n95? It definitely had a weird WiFi implementation.

@thomasfuchs I can't wait to see one round these parts... I'll bet they wouldn't last a week before corroding into a pile of dust in the salty wet air :D

Anybody want a shiny sticker or five? I might have gone overboard with an order 😜

Round shiny stickers that say Live Laugh LocalTalk

billgoats,
@billgoats@bitbang.social avatar

@lathamgreen I had one once upon a time. They scrape off such a huge percentage for commission and charges and card fees and and and and… Can be worth it for decently priced crafty stuff; absolutely not for a silly sticker ;)

Had a poke round Orkney Wireless Museum, and found another good reminder of why you always need to check up on your capacitors.

(it's really disconcerting to have old computers without the grinding hard drive sounds to reassure you that they're still thinking and not just frozen)

I’ve been rebuilding a installation that supports my classic Mac habit 😄

I used to use the awesome image which includes a ton of pre-configured software like . But it hasn’t been updated in a while so I used it as excuse to start from scratch.

I used this Pi Zero W as my starting point. HDMI video stopped working on it for unknown reasons. I added an Ethernet/USB hub hat and a 2 hat for devices.

billgoats,
@billgoats@bitbang.social avatar

@paulrickards I found the same thing a couple of years back. CUPS is handy and convenient, but MacPalette is so much better.

billgoats,
@billgoats@bitbang.social avatar

@paulrickards does AppleScript let you send a click to a specific coordinate? assuming the dialog is always in the same place, a wait and then a click where OK is could maybe work.

billgoats,
@billgoats@bitbang.social avatar

@paulrickards that’s looking so much better!
