Need some bird help!

My 6 year old says he saw a kiwibird, but we live in Oregon, USA. I'm trying to find similarly shaped birds to show him so we can figure out what it was but although we loved the woodcock dance videos (thanks Mom!) they don't live on this coast. Any other ideas?

Boosts great if you've got birder friends who might have good ideas!

I have a WordPress blog but honestly the interface isn't meeting my needs very well any more -- text entry on the web is just laggy enough that it makes writing frustrating, and the app did so many api calls that I got auto-blocked by my host... None of this is insurmountable but also I'm getting tired of it. And the ongoing issues with the CEO hassling trans people and the corporate AI moves have made me less inclined to work around problems.

Anyone got blog software they love? I'm debating going back to some kind of static site thing but think I need a way to write drafts from my phone and have them live on the server.

Thanks to everyone who voted in https://fosstodon.org/@brettcannon/112395986863435778 ! An interesting outcome was that "chore" got a large number of write-in votes (see the replies to the poll). It was actually so consistent and numerous i wouldn't be surprised if it would have won the vote had I included it. 😅

terri,
@terri@social.afront.org avatar

@brettcannon I wonder if so many of us use "chore" because it's what's in Conventional Commits' standard set of git prefixes?

Hatch is very concerned that I finally sat down for a few minutes and would really like to help me get moving again. 🙄

Maybe one of you is not getting over a cold and would like a reminder to move?

Nurse Hatch is very concerned that I smell different from usual (on account of being sick and very snotty) but I really wasn't expecting 70 pounds of labrador to attempt to be a shoulder dragon.

Today is Millie's "gotcha" day. It's been a year of this goofball.

@kwf yay Millie! Thank you so much for sharing her antics with us this past year! 🐾♥️

Your mileage may differ, but with Hatch the one year mark is around when his metabolism slowed enough that we needed to cut back his food a bit and swap in some dental treats because he wasn't gnawing his toys as much. We only realized after the vet lectured us. 😅

terri,
@terri@social.afront.org avatar

@kwf smart! We, uh, only noticed several months later when the vet was like "Hatch is gaining too much weight and we recommend $1000 worth of preventative teeth cleaning"

Cleaning would have involved sedation so we taught him to sit for tooth brushing. Hatch loves attention so he is surprisingly into toothbrush time as a periodic activity, but I'm glad for the dental treats so I don't have to do it so often!

Steller's Jay just showed up, chased off the house finches, and accidentally woke up Hatch who was sleeping by the window.

Bought a squirrel feeder for my kid and dog to enjoy some squirrel tv at the dinner table.

My mom asked if it's marketed as a squirrel feeder, and the answer is no, but it clips onto the railing like a Tim Hortons on the 401 so I can't imagine it not being used as a squirrel pit stop.

Got my yarn wound for the Romi Mystery!

Alas, kiddo had a bit of rough evening so I haven't started knitting, but it sounds like @KarenStrickholm is busy drying yarn so we might not be too far apart!

Ooh, I found an old but clean fountain pen in a drawer. I haven't used one in years. Anyone want to tell me about what's fun but not ludicrously expensive in inks?

I'm currently in the US for shopping purposes, and will likely be using it in a bullet journal that has ok paper in it. Boosts & tag recommendations welcome!

I am not seeing enough about what is going on US university campuses on mastodon. Maybe I am following different crowd.

terri,

@kushal I'm seeing so much that I couldn't even bring myself to boost any on the assumption everyone following me would be similarly overwhelmed.

terri,

@kushal looks like you've already found the ones I was seeing most repeatedly. I don't really boost us political stuff for my own safety.

Decided I had enough clasped weft so now I'm learning how to use a pick up stick. Anyone got a favourite woodworker who makes them? (I know, I can use a ruler or something, but I really love pretty, well-made tools. And paying artists!)

More fun worth pooling and clasped weft. The videos I watched about selvages yesterday helped a bit, and now I'm finding myself a little obsessed with finishing this so I can try something with a little less variegated yarn. Still quite a ways to go, though, alas!

Maybe I should weave shorter pieces for the rest of the month, but I'm not sure what I'd do with them... I'm starting to understand the appeal of weaving towels but I wanted to use up more of my existing stash, and there's not that much cotton in it.

@terri@social.afront.org avatar

Tell me about your favourite learning resources.

My initial goal is more "understand Rust security" rather than "write things in Rust" but I'm not adverse to learning development. It's just that architecture, design choices, ecosystem and community likely matter more to me than "how to write an if statement."

I've got access to the O'Reilly courses so if any of those are great (or terrible) I'd love to know.

Another project I meant to do for mending month: some emboidered leaves to cover tiny holes on this tshirt. 🌿

It might look cooler with more leaves but given how old this shirt is I figure that'll likely happen eventually and I don't need to do it all today 😅

A full view of the t-shirt with the leaves all near the bottom.

Time once again to showcase my favourite easy embroidery finishing technique:

  1. Get some cardboard and trace the inner part of the inner hoop you're using for framing.
  2. Cut out your circle.
  3. Arrange your piece in the frame. I like to trim the corners off, but make sure to leave enough fabric to wrap inside the frame.
  4. Fold the fabric to the back and push it in with the cardboard.
  5. Take a look at the front and wiggle things around a bit if you need to. Sometimes the fabric gets folded such that it makes a bump and you'll want to refold it so it's flatter.
  6. Done and ready for display!

I'm definitely from the school of "done is better than perfect" when it comes to getting my embroidery on display, and maybe you could be too? 🐝

I'm calling these Paint Drip socks in my head. 🎨 Writing up a pattern feels like so much work but now that I've named it I'll probably wind up at least putting some notes on the blog.

(Had to switch from weaving because I can't weave and read the way I can read and knit!)

Weaving month continues. I was experimenting with loosening the edge a bit and accidentally got pooling that gave me mini stripes for a bit before I changed colour!

I'm so delighted by it that I'm keeping it even though it means my edges aren't perfectly even. This piece is shaping up to be a sketchbook of experiments and I like giving myself the space to play.

CVE Binary Tool 3.3 is released! (At long last!)

This is my work open source project that lets you scan for known vulnerabilities in your binaries, package lists and SBOMs. It's meant to make it easier (and cheaper!) to make secure open source software.

3.3 has new features from our Google Summer of Code 2023 contributors including EPSS metrics to help users assess risks associated with vulnerabilities, a new GitHub Action to make scanning easier, and a mirror of the NVD data backed by the same servers that do Linux distro mirroring so you don't have to deal with rate limits, downtime, and servers only located in the US.

Release notes: https://github.com/intel/cve-bin-tool/releases/tag/v3.3

And get the code on pypi:
https://pypi.org/project/cve-bin-tool/3.3/

Boosts appreciated!

Having some fun with my March Gauge Dyeworks club yarn. This is based on the technique from the Knitloops socks (free on Knitty!) but I wanted more of a random paint drip vibe.
