oh wow - this youtuber uploaded two separate audio tracks for his deep-dive review of coffee creamers: one "normal", and one with the slurping and mouth sounds removed for #misophonia sufferers. Brilliant!
Spring, ffs. There are songs, even symphonies, glorifying birdsong written by everyone from Paul McCartney & Fleetwood Mac to Frederick Delius, Vaughan Williams, & Messiaen. But, I swear to god, if you're neurodivergent/misophonic, some bird 'song' is the aural equivalent of being waterboarded.
Just spotted this. In a neurotypical world which hasn't been created with sound-sensitive neurodivergent people in mind, this statement is an act of revolution.
The uprising has begun...
...Inaudibly.

OMFG someone at the ball fields across the street has discovered the loudspeakers. Fuck me. Distant sound like that makes me insane. I will have to sell my house if this keeps up. #misophonia#neurodivergent
Interesting article about noise sensitivity. Very recognizable. I couldn't live without my noise-cancelling headphones and earbuds anymore. They've made my life less stressful.
Our online study about #misophonia, #ASMR, musical #chills aka #frisson, and #musicality reactions in the general population is now accepted for a special issue at Phil Trans B on "Sensing and Feeling"! Thanks especially to editors Hirohito Kondo and Brian Moore for putting together such an exciting topic!
See link for updated pre-print on OSF.
We found a lot of things but here a few highlights:
Misophonia reactions to videos seem to be pretty common, even in people who wouldn't be diagnosed with "misophonia" The Disorder.
People who have a lot misophonia reactions to videos also have a lot of ASMR and chills reactions.
A self-report measure of general musicality does not correlate with misophonia, ASMR, or chills reactions. But stay tuned because we're doing an in person study now with both adults and kids using a wider set of music perception tasks.
Nice to see some official recognition and serious #research being done on #misophonia. Maybe someday I'll be able to sit down to a quiet dinner with my family without needing auditory distractions (TV, music, etc).
Please share widely on behalf of Erin Hannon, Stephen Benning, and myself:
The Auditory Cognitive Development Lab in the department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at University of Nevada Las Vegas are offering a postdoctoral fellowship position for the Development of misophonia and other auditory affective experiences in children and adolescents project, sponsored by a grant from the Misophonia Research Fund. The position is for 2 years starting March 2024 or shortly after. The project examines high-level auditory affective experiences during development, by examining the relationship between misophonia and music and language skills in developing children, adolescents, and adults. The research will take a longitudinal approach using a combination of clinical instruments and perceptual testing with listeners age six through adulthood. The position emphasizes an apprenticeship model where the postdoctoral fellow will work collaboratively and closely with three faculty mentors who have expertise in developmental science, cognitive neuroscience, and clinical psychology. The position requires a Ph.D. from a regionally accredited college or university in a related discipline (Psychology, Neuroscience, etc.). Preferred skills include experience supervising, mentoring and management of others, excellent experimental and computer programming skills, and a promising track record of publications in Psychology, Developmental Science, Speech and Hearing, Neuroscience, or another field related to the project. Specific experience with EEG, child testing, longitudinal research, and/or advanced data analysis techniques is desirable but not required. Credentials must be obtained prior to the start of employment.
To apply, submit a letter of interest, a detailed resume listing qualifications and experience, and the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of at least three professional references who may be contacted. Applicants should fully describe their qualifications and experience, with specific reference to each of the minimum and preferred qualifications because this is the information on which the initial review of materials will be based.
Although this position will remain open until filled, review of candidates’ materials will begin immediately and best consideration will be gained for materials submitted prior to January 2024. Materials should be addressed to Dr. Erin Hannon, Search Committee Chair, and are to be submitted online as we do not accept emailed materials. Me every gdmn morning when I sit down to watch some news before I get going for the day, and my dad sits next to me, swallowing his f'king tea SO DMN LOUD I CAN BARELY HEAR THE TV 😫😡😤 #sensoryIssues#overStimulation
if you have friends, family or loved ones with #misophonia, please give respect. It's not just your problem. However much inconvenience you think it causes you, you have no idea.
@tomkindlon@longcovid@mecfs I've recently realized my #misophonia is a really useful tell rather than just a crippling side effect: if I have to seriously fight the urge to yell at the cat or the neighbor with the leaf blower, I've done too much and the crash is already on its way. If I can just manage to cover my ears and fetch my headphones, I'll probably be okay if I stop. Of course I could set my timer to remind me to take breaks, but what fun is that?
#Misophonia is more than being annoyed by certain sounds (like chewing, slurping, snoring, & breathing). It's about feeling helpless when you can't get away from these sounds & missing out on things because of this. Responses can range from mild irritation & anger to distress
I figured it was finally time for a new #introduction post, so here goes.
Hi, I’m Deanna (they/them) :blobfoxwave:. I’m nonbinary and genderfluid. I’ve moved around Europe a lot, before finding my home in #Finland. I have #misophonia and I’ve been dealing with #LongCovid since mid 2020.
I work as a physicist studying some of the cool stuff that happened in the early universe. I’m very passionate about science #outreach and I’ve been doing #cosmology livestreams - called #CupOfCosmology - since late 2015 (link in bio). I'm also open about my struggles with #MentalHealth in academia, and my experience as #LGBTQInSTEM and as a (perceived) #WomanInSTEM.
I love meeting new people, so feel free to follow and interact!
