: Ep 5 Review, 1/3

This episode really strikes me. It has the most interesting plot so far, and crystallizes what I love about the show... as well as my hesitations.

One thing I really like is so small. I love the artistic decision to bend irises forward, when faces are in side profile. It's not at all how eyes look in real life. But it's genius. Eyes are gelatinous, and light bends things that are suspended in liquid. It makes sense in a weird way.

It's part of what makes animation great; the ability to accentuate the physical properties of something and exaggerate them until they feel hyper-real.

One kind of funny quirk is how Netflix handles language.

Subtitles don't match the English dub. They are clearly meant to accompany the Japanese audio. It's disorienting at times to read words out of order in the spoken dialogue. Or just different dialogue altogether :tomo_MimimiLaugh:

But the funniest part is how the character Charlotte keeps calling her betrothed "Baruder" in English. The captions correctly reads 'Balder.'

That means the VA was given a transliteration from the Japanese as Baruder, and no one in the studio realized the mistake.

Not mad about it. It's kinda charming.

Hello internet? I've come up with a dog whistle for referring to tech giants.

Henceforth, I propose we co-opt the name of the copyrighted character Dr Wily®.

How come?

Tech giants tend to either A) refactor existing tech to serve their own evil plans like in 1 or B) reproduce new tech based on information from those robots, er tech, for dubious purposes... like in every subsequent Megaman game.

A full proposal and call for public comment will be held at the Statue of Lenin in Seattle. Please refrain from all comments on the likeness of Lenin to Dr Wily himself. Let's be adult about this.

It’s like watching a tribute band do covers of your favorite music. Not bad? But they’re trying so hard to copy everything.

Would have almost been better if they’d just let someone make it their own. Say something unique.

@astrid its a huge problem. I've done short workstays there, and I know people who work there. No one apart from the leadership can afford to live anywhere nearby. Its one of the most beautiful places I've ever set foot. But none of the workers can afford the area.

My 2nd pick is "U.N. Owen Was Her?"; the classic by

With the most enigmatic title I've ever heard, Flandre Scarlet's theme is complex and surprising with every new passage.

The intro builds two complex melodies with completely different feeling time before even hinting at the main theme.

And then it follows that up with an equally complex bridge before reprising one of those intros remixed.

It reminds me of "Battle at the Big Bridge" by Uematsu. Complex to the point of almost being prog.

It is technically just Aerith's Theme. But that's why it always has such a crushing impac.

Boss music tends to create a sense of urgency by being complex and energetic.

But hearing the soft, melancholy chords we've come to associate with the beauty of Aerith's life, it makes facing her killer all the more tragic.

After all that time spent falling in love with this character, it's painful to think this might be the last time you hear it.
