Sometimes you need a smile

In those times, think of Wrinkles the Duck https://www.runnersworld.com/news/a45756444/wrinkle-the-duck-runs-2023-nyc-marathon/

@flexghost This is the best thing I've seen in ages.

I love the realization that, after I've decided to do something one way, that doing it that was was extra smart for reasons I hadn't considered.

"You just stay at home anyway" "Jeez, what could you be doing that you're that busy?" "What do you do for work? Unemployed? What are you doing in another country then?"

This is just a sample of the shit that's been said to me since I gave up a career I loved to support my husband's career and live internationally.

The mindset that you're only worth something if you're busting ass in the corporate universe is so frustrating. The stereotypes on parents who aren't making a paycheck are so annoying.

I have never before realized how much more there is to being a human and being alive than I have since giving up the corporate world.

I still love working. I still love computers. I plan to work again when the time is right.

But jeez. It would be nice if people realized I'm still worth something in the meantime.

/PSA... if you have someone in your life that struggles with anxiety of any kind, and for you it manifests as them "suddenly" jumping to the worst possible conclusion... please understand that they didn't. They didn't "suddenly jump" to that worst conclusion. In fact, they have likely spent agonizing hours, maybe days or weeks or even longer worrying, thinking, over-analyzing, looking days, weeks, months, ten years down the road at every possible scenario and are trying to brace themselves for the very worst because they literally can't help it.

bluecat,
@bluecat@ioc.exchange avatar

And all the while they are trying to logic themselves off a cliff of their own making by reminding themselves of the actual facts and "it's probably just..." and a deep understanding of their own habit of making a gigantic all consuming mountain out of what often turns out to be nothing.

This is how my husband's annoyance that it's raining outside for the fourth day in a row turns into an hours long session of me internally planning how I will provide for my children all on my own when I inevitably have to move back to the USA by myself.

Yes, I can get to that conclusion from absolutely nothing, and it's very difficult to be this type of person. So before you get annoyed with someone who is like this, hold up a second, because they are most likely already incredibly annoyed with themselves for being like this.

Was editing part of a story I wrote and came across the typo "the universe seemed to shit slightly" (meant to write "shift")

Honestly considered leaving it that way because I mean, seems more accurate, really.

Can we be done now with that thing where people hold something up to the camera and tap their fingernails against it to make noise? Can we just please be done with that? Please🥲?

    my band is trying to make me draw our band logo because I'm an "Artist" but spoiler alert, I am bad at coming up with logos. I made these two and they are giving me flack. What do we think?? I think they are fine, we're just a cover band we're not the friggin Beatles or something.

    It is blatantly obvious to me in reading discussion posts from my fellow classmates why new cybersecurity graduates are not able to secure jobs. 😕 I'm also realizing I could've picked a much much much much easier thesis project for myself when I compare it to what other people are doing....

    bluecat,
    @bluecat@ioc.exchange avatar

    I want to clarify that this post is not a commentary on the intelligence of my classmates, only on their grasp of cybersecurity concepts by the time they've reached this stage of the grad program.

    bluecat,
    @bluecat@ioc.exchange avatar

    @bnflaherty There seem to be two distinct groups in my grad class - those of us that already work in the field and are now obtaining our Masters, and have worked with the concepts we're studying in the real-world already, and those that have not yet worked in the field. What I notice most glaringly in the way those who haven't yet worked in the field present information or choose study topics is that they seem to be a dozen or more years behind in the information they are presenting.

    For instance, they typically write about how ransomware is "becoming" a huge threat, or how cybersecurity awareness is "starting to be" more important in the work place.

    Oddly, the texts and assigned materials are not outdated (with some exceptions), so I'm not sure where the disconnect actually is.

    I just spent the past two hours trying to get my mom’s different vendor, old ass, non compatible devices to all communicate with each other so she could do whatever it is she is trying to do, and I got nowhere and now I have to tell her and listen to her rant about why technology is the problem when really… technology is not the problem (in this case, anyway).

    I did, in fact, get the devices to do what I wanted but not without a lot of loopholes and hoops that I know my mom can’t and won’t perform to achieve her goal.

    My grandma makes the best chocolate chip cookies. She is 92. She has been making these same cookies for decades upon decade and they appear at every family gathering and are devoured.

    I am in the US this week and she brought the cookies to family dinner. We noticed significantly less chocolate chips. One cookie even had NONE. When asked why there were so few, my grandma told me, “I was told by someone that my cookies had too many chocolate chips in them. So now I put less.”

    EXCUSE?!

    The entire family was shocked and outraged (especially me). How DARE some interloper interfere with a time honored cookie recipe?!? HOW. DARE.

    bluecat,
    @bluecat@ioc.exchange avatar

    Who on Gods green earth tells a 92 year old grandma there is something wrong with her cookie recipe?!!??? The AUDACITY.

    I hassled her endlessly to tell me who this jerk was so I could find and destroy them but she wouldn’t give me a name.

    bluecat,
    @bluecat@ioc.exchange avatar

    I just KNOW it was some joyless elder in the senior lunch group she’s in.

    Imma find out. I’m coming for you. You dare to get my grandma to change her sacred cookie recipe?!

    bluecat,
    @bluecat@ioc.exchange avatar

    Eventually my grandma got sick of my hassling her and told me if I didn’t stop it she was going to throw all the cookies in the trash 😂

    bluecat,
    @bluecat@ioc.exchange avatar

    @drmorr @bluecat exactly. My entire family agrees with this. The dough is literally there to act as a carrier for the chocolate chips.

    bluecat,
    @bluecat@ioc.exchange avatar

    @trz @bluecat I can only imagine some old curmudgeon complaining because who in their right mind messes with a grandma’s recipe? It’s unthinkable.
