How far along would we be if generation upon generation didn't have to fight selfish, sadist fuckwads.

ICYMI -

This dropped late Friday. Meta is coming out with a new text-based Instagram app (essentially a Twitter replacement) that is decentralized and based on the same platform as Mastodon (ActivityPub) and will federate with Mastodon.

Super cool stuff that has the potential to completely alter the social media landscape.

I dunno, I'm kind of enjoying it here on Mastodon, and not being the product for sale...

I left over 25 years ago, and came back to be near my (and my wife's) aging parents a bit over 10 years ago. Unfortunately, I can't leave for a while.

Y'all, I am preparing to read a complete avalanche--nay, a collapsing star--of bullshit.

boelder,
@boelder@shakedown.social avatar

@oliphant

I might buy it if there were credible people from Twitter saying, "Oh, we've really blown it... Daily average logins and engagements are off-the-charts down, and we've got an incredible issue with Nazi trolls having taken over the site..."

But there's none of that.

There's just a figurehead who is right proud of his platforming of right-wing nut jobs and trolls and 'Twitter Blue' impersonators.

Twitter will continue to circle the drain, and it's a damn shame. I miss what it was.

Here Justine Bateman’s thread lays out a case for why AI in entertainment must be addressed now, protections created or writers, actors and directors may not have a profession or career at all very soon. Writers Guild (WGA), SAG-AFTRA and the Directors Guild of America (DGA) are fighting for our professions to exist at all.

Screenshot of tweets by @JustineBateman • 2h Your digital image can be triple and quadruple booked, so that bodes well for a 10 percenter. 4/ 2. Films customized for a viewer, based on their viewing history, which has been collected for many years. Actors will have the option to have their image "bought out" to be used in anything at all. 5/ 3. Films "ordered up" by the viewer. For example, " want a film about a panda and a unicorn who save the world in a rocket ship. And put Bill Murray in it." 6/ 4. Viewers getting digitally scanned themselves, and paying extra to have themselves inserted in these custom films. 7/
Screenshot of tweets by @JustineBateman 5. Licensing deals made with studios so that viewers can order up older films like STAR WARS and put their face on Luke Skywalker's body and their ex-wife's face on Darth Vader's body, etc. 8/ 6. Training an Al program on an older hits TV series, and creating an additional season. FAMILY TIES, for example, has 167 episodes. An Al program could easily be trained on this, and create an eighth season. We only shot seven. 9/ Al has to be addressed now or never. I believe this is the last time any labor action will be effective in our business. If we don't make strong rules now, they simply won't notice if we strike in three years, because at that point they won't need us. 10/end Addendum: Actors, you must have iron-clad protection against the Al use of your image and voice in the SAG MBA or your profession is finished. Demand it from @sagaftra and do not accept any AMPTP proposal that does not have it.

Damn, she makes some really, really good points. I believed that this was the moment to make a stand with AI, but... this really lays out the roadmap.

Everything you see on television and in the movies (except for trash like reality TV) has involved writers.

Creatives.

They're not getting paid what they deserve. Media has evolved since the mid-2000s, and their last contract negotiations. The writers of your favorite shows deserve to be paid a living wage to write on those shows. Living in LA and NYC is expensive.

The studios profit immensely from their work.

Support the Writers Guild Of America.

• A man in Louisiana has been charged with shooting a 14-year-old girl in the head as she played near his property.

• David V. Doyle fired on a group of kids playing hide and seek, unknowingly hitting the girl.

• He was charged with aggravated battery, aggravated assault, and illegal discharge of a firearm.

@pivoinebleue

When one discharges a firearm towards any living human who is not bothering you in any way, that should be attempted murder. When that discharge is towards a 'group of kids', that should be multiple counts of attempted murder.

Those charges are weak, and the DA is weak, like our laws are weak.

The best moment on TV featuring Tucker Carlson was when Jon Stewart told him to go fuck himself on "Crossfire." still a classic for the ages:

@Litzz11

This encounter broke Tuck's brain. He stopped wearing bowties, and within a few months, Crossfire - a show that had been on TV for decades - was no more.

Never underestimate Jon Stewart.

Just lost my Twitter verification, but that's not a real problem. The real problem is the oligarchs who have too much power over the internet.

And our economy.

And our democracy.

Remember, we have more in common with each other than we do with them — blue check or not.
