unsigned vs signed integers

brainwane,

@b0rk for a long time I thought "signed" (re: integers) meant more secure in some way. Like cryptographically signed

Does anyone have recommendations for a drink/gel/chew/power that gives you electrolytes but without added sugar (or sugar alternatives)?

I've been getting post-exercise headaches and would like to, you know, not.

Some people have a really hard time with calendars and dates and times, especially on computers, and especially when expressed as numbers rather than words.

"I can't tell Google Calendar days apart and the days keep moving around relative to each other so things creep up and surprise me.... It feels like writing on sand"

I don't believe I have this problem, but I found this account illuminating and will keep it in mind as I try to accommodate others.

lol booking downtown Cleveland hotels during next year's eclipse went from "we don't book that far in advance" to “we're sold out" in like a day, fml

@mpirnat @bitprophet oh I remember that hotel being totally reasonable but leaving no other impression on me. Seamlessly slid out of my head

struck again by how the smooth right-to-left motion and the mechanical theme in the video for Howard Jones's "No One Is To Blame" https://youtu.be/pekhxxngQ3s reinforce the song's resigned acceptance; the universe's convolutions inevitably result in these painful paradoxes, and you suffer, and no one is to blame.

Very catchy song in a recent BBC Introducing Mixtape:
Meet Me At The Bus Stop's "In Love With The Groove"

(track list at https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001kxll )

or, seems like a direct link to the song:

@treyhunner I think when I was walking around the Expo Hall with you I mentioned Motherland: Fort Salem; please do let me know whether the person you mentioned has already seen it!

brainwane,
@brainwane@social.coop avatar

@offby1 @treyhunner I enjoyed it thoroughly as a suspenseful, action-y, character-filled alt-history fantasy full of varied women characters. If one doesn't like the first 2-3 episodes then one won't like the rest, in my opinion

I have gotten a negative on an antigen test and a Lucira rapid molecular test since leaving a few days ago, in addition to my negative tests while in Salt Lake City, so things are looking good so far re: . Hope others have also remained uninfected!

brainwane,
@brainwane@social.coop avatar

And, as of today, a negative PCR test, nearly a week after I left Salt Lake City. Looks like 's mitigations, and my precautions, worked for me!

More on what I did: https://www.harihareswara.net/posts/2023/pycon-2023-argument-clinic-mitigating-covid-risk/ & https://www.harihareswara.net/posts/2022/how-i-thought-about-an-in-person-conference-choice/ . I did find that the CO2 levels in some indoor spaces were ~500-600ppm, near outdoors levels, and thus was ok with lowering my mask to sip something indoors, which I did ~15-20 times.

Clear mask I wore on stage: https://jellim.com/

I have left but I bet people would enjoy FOSSY in Portland, Oregon in July! Call for talks open till May 14th.

https://sfconservancy.org/news/2023/apr/24/fossy-cfp-open/

"Our track organizers put together an incredible list of tracks including FOSS For Education, AI + Data, Science of Community, in Daily Life and much much more."

@chrisjrn Great to see you too and I am SO glad you enjoyed the play! This year it is unlikely I will be able to make it to FOSSY, unfortunately, but I hope it happens again next year and I can even propose a track then!

Considering how extremely mainstream and normal codes of conduct are now—for both live events and online groups—it's super interesting to me to look back at how fiercely some relatively loud voices in many parts of tech resisted them, often insisting they would make [abuse/ harassment/ whatever] worse and inevitably result in lawsuits and bankruptcies.

Like, I'm not going to name names, but I wonder sometimes if those people came around or are still enraged, just silently.

@stylus Thanks! You can watch it now on Hubilo. The PyCon social media account says videos will be up on YouTube soon. "In the coming weeks" says https://twitter.com/pycon/status/1651649167284903954 and "faster than last year" says https://social.coop/@Yhg1s/110271766074591183 .

4 years ago, I listed https://www.harihareswara.net/posts/2019/tropes-and-missing-stories-in-art-about-programming/ some "missing stories in art about programming".

2023 has announced that they're seeking short films. https://2023.pygotham.tv/2023/03/04/announcing-pygotham-2023/

I hope some enthusiasts will use this opportunity to make new art that reflects the emotional experience of making technology.

brainwane,

@benb Thank you so much! May I ask -- to quote @glyph -- will you be doing anything differently as a result of seeing our play?

And thanks so much, again, for the photos, which I do intend to reuse!

brainwane,

@benb Much appreciated!

You're not alone in finding those the most salient takeaways.

BTW, as a attendee, you can visit https://events.hubilo.com/pycon-us-2023/session/194110 to re-watch the session (albeit without captions; I assume the YouTube upload in a few weeks will have captions).
