You know what? Today’s the day I do it. I’m going to translate a haiku into a limerick and none of you can stop me.

飛こんで 古歌洗う 蛙かな
tobikonde — furu-uta arau — kawazu kana

You know Bashō, of course -- magisterial --
and his old puddle (beauty: ethereal).
But if you like haiku
then check out Buson too,
'cause that froggy has got new material.

brecht,
@brecht@social.coop avatar

@bokane I'm wondering now what the actual rules of a haiku in Japanese are. Is it also based around the number of syllables, so counting some of the kanji as two syllables? Or is it the number of characters per line that matters, regardless of whether the pronunciation of a particular kanji has one or two syllables?

I guess the broader point I'm trying to understand is whether haikus in Japanese are primarily a visual or an oral form of poetry.

Little ever happens in Alpine, and this is good.

On such hot days, we used to tightly close our German shutters (Rollläden) as a heat shield. Then a couple years ago, a builder told us that this is just wrong. Air between shutter and window can get up to 90 degrees, damage the shutters and the window and heat up rooms significantly more. You are supposed to leave a gap at the bottom for circulation. Works wonders and seems so obvious in hindsight. I still see them tightly shut everywhere. Don’t know where this is coming from.

brecht,
@brecht@social.coop avatar

@bastianallgeier Turns out I already did it right. Not because I already knew this, but just because I still wanted to let in some natural light and was prepared to accept a slightly warmer house in exchange. Good to know that it's not actually a trade-off at all!

chris titus tech's new linux tier list landed in my youtube recommendations, and it's pretty awful. i think he should just stick to teaching noobs how to debloat windows, because that's what he's actually good at. he basically just shit on the majority of distros just because you can install whatever desktop you want on debian or arch (even though debian's versions of desktops might be older than what certain debian based distros provide)

he also called fedora "the devil" -_-

For over a year now I've been mulling over a kind of fediverse software that I wanted to write, and this week I'm finally getting the feeling that things are coming together.

Hopefully I can share a first POC soon!

brecht,

@sarangshah I'm trying to cover a similar usecase to the "Connect directly" feature on https://fed.brid.gy/, but simpler to self-host without relying on an external bridging service.

Final football trial for my daughter this evening. Between club academies, grassroots teams (girls & mixed) and County, she's had a month of them.

Hopefully she'll get to choose between Sunderland (already offered a place in the ETC) and Newcastle (whose ETC she was in last year).

What with being in the midst of selling our house, my son finishing exams, and travel, it's been... a lot.

General question about and .

Threads will come online later this week. But reportedly they won’t federate right away with anyone. So I’ve seen some people say: nothing to worry about, yet.

But hear me out here. If they’re running , can’t all corners of the Fediverse then not start following people on Threads from the outset? Boost their posts, like and comment, etc?

In other words, will the see a deluge of posts coming from Threads this Thursday?

brecht,
@brecht@social.coop avatar

@msteenhagen Normally not, posts are pushed from the author's server to those of their followers, so if Threads doesn't push anything out, we won't see it. Maybe the other direction would work, from fedi to Threads, but even then it would be pretty one way even Threads doesn't push out its interactions.

brecht,
@brecht@social.coop avatar

@msteenhagen I suspect that might give you some kind barebones of view of that account's profile page, but I don't expect it would have any posts or other federated content.

brecht,
@brecht@social.coop avatar

@jbenguira What's the support for migrating out your data. Because this could be a great way to get a new instance going, but it would be great to have the option to e.g. move to a self-hosted fork down the line.

Elon Musk may or may not be deliberately tanking Twitter, but if you believe he could run it well and has simply chosen not to, you're as big a simp as the rightwing bluechecks.

He's not a genius. This is him working at the limits of his capabilities. This is who he is.

brecht,
@brecht@social.coop avatar

@maxleibman I'm undecided whether it's Musk himself who's deliberately tanking Twitter, or if his creditors decided to fund his takeover because they were confident he'd tank it. Starting to lean towards the latter though.

brecht,
@brecht@social.coop avatar

@maxleibman Yeah that is pretty weird. I guess it starts from the politicians at the top who don't want to admit they gave billions in subsidies to a charlatan, and trickles down from there to his weird online fandom.

brecht,
@brecht@social.coop avatar

@lichess Additionally, I think every pawn should get a single two-square jump that can use at any point in the game, so not just on its first move. Imagine the anguish if your opponent has a passed pawn two squares from promotion, but you can't remember if it has already used up his "jump" or not...

interfluidity, to random

Hi! I am going to try to move to @interfluidity

My un-CW-ed political posts have annoyed some fosstodonians. I love fosstodon.org! but CW-ing a large proportion of my posts would I think annoy many of the people I converse with, and feel isolating. So with regret, I'll try moving to a server with less apolitical norms. Hopefully, my follows and followers will migrate with me. It's my first time. We'll see!

brecht,
@brecht@social.coop avatar

@interfluidity @interfluidity Seems to have worked for me as well. In general I think there should be no issues with followers on up-to-date Mastodon servers. I have moved several times myself, and at times I have lost some followers on forked or outdated servers.

if you feel that my critique of the Gemini protocol spec is totally out of line, then maybe address those details in your response. You don't have to tell me that I'm a horrible person.

brecht,
@brecht@social.coop avatar

@bagder As someone who fiddled with it and likes the idea of Gemini, I think the post is very good.

In fact, the community should probably be happy you're pointing out these ambiguities. If curl had just implemented one specific interpretation instead, that would immediately be the de facto standard for the protocol as a whole, and would have taken away all control the community itself could have had over those decisions.
