Our first rental here in 2014 was $750/m.

Our second rental was $1020/m in 2016.

Our third rental was $1350 in 2019…

…. wait for it…

Units like ours now rent from $2,000-2,200/m.

Prices for rent have nearly TRIPLED in less than a decade. We’ve been priced out - it’s a large part of why we’re leaving.

How do you get ahead, save, and buy homes in this economy?!

I’m American by birth, btw.

My family is in Real Estate, my dad is a professor of 30+ years who teaches Real Estate and Appraisal. I understand housing markets. I could write a mean novel, lol.

Now… Listen for a moment. If you’re American and telling me it’s the same - it isn’t. You don’t get it. Canada is off the charts.

@HistoPol @britt @drahardja AFAIU Canada has: a strong NIMBY lobby, zoning that actively discourages construction of affordable housing, has treated housing as an investment vehicle for 25+ years, removed most government agencies that build or support affordable housing, ignored foreign investment, and ignored money laundering.

Also, has brought in a tonne of people: students and foreign workers, giving us one of the fastest growing populations in the G7.

Our landlord recently boasted about meeting both Poilievre and Peterson and is, imho, dangerously conservative.

It felt nice telling him that anyone who wants to step foot in our apartment for a viewing needs to wear a mask due to my health concerns. 😷

If you understand you’ll understand why this made me snicker. 💪🏼

WE ARE MOVING!!! Finally!!!

We were approved for a place yesterday and will make our way to our new home in Alberta in June!

Super excited to be close to family again and in a larger city. Sad to say goodbye to the beautiful west coast, though… our home for nearly a decade.

I cannot wait - a fresh start is desperately needed.

You realize you’ve been carrying around boxes of braces for various parts of your body your whole life… 😂

… And it took doctors over 30 years to diagnose you with Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder.

I guess it’s not ‘normal’ to have a collection of braces for your shoulders, wrists, knees, and ankles, eh? 😆

@britt it was but I had to move at a really awful time health wise and everything went into storage whilst I stayed with a friend whilst I got well.

I’ve been in my new place for a couple of months and it’s lovely but it’s taken a while to leave the last 6/7 months behind.
