23 December 2023, 12pm, 17.4 C on my balcony.

It is not the first time we have warm days in December, yet 17.4 is something.

I feel like screaming:

“Worse yet, studies have shown that carbon-capture technology itself emits a lot of carbon dioxide, that it can only capture a fraction of the CO2 emitted by fossil fuels, and that just shutting down coal, fossil gas, and petroleum production and substituting wind, solar, hydro, and batteries is far safer, cheaper, and better for the environment.”

16C on my balcony in December. It is sunny and the only thing I can do is enjoy it.

L’eau doit être disponible pour la population, et pas pour être mise en bouteille et vendue. Une industrie inutile en moins…

Powerful:

“Today, the rejection of science continues. Even as the oceans rise from Arctic, Antarctic and Greenland ice sheet melt, even as previously impossible fires rage world over, even as killer heat waves lasting weeks take lives, even as crop failures increase from an ever more fluctuating jet stream, even as insurers pull out of markets because climate risks have become too great, we grant climate change deniers positions of power.”

Google collects a lot of data AND is not an efficient search engine anymore. Why keep using it?

“The only keyword search warrants that we have heard of that have been successful for the police have been to Google. People do use other search engines. But the police are not asking for information from those search engines, because they're not storing the data in a way that can be identified and released to the police.”

Ominous: just got a call from Cameroon on my mobile. I know nobody there. So, my data is probably in the hands of scammers. Blocked the caller and raised my paranoia level 🙁. I wish I could make the phones of scammers explode distantly. I hate them.

@cbzo@mastodon.green avatar

@juergen_hubert That would be the best case scenario. Though since I use a service to block unwanted callers, I tend to not be too optimistic.

What a slippery slope our environmental degradation is.

Are we going to normalize having to have personal air purifiers in our homes (for those who can afford them) and let polluters keep polluting, rather than clean up the air for everyone?

https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2023/08/18/1194323903/air-quality-filter-purifier-indoor-pollution?

cbzo,
@cbzo@mastodon.green avatar

@petergleick Air purifiers consume energy. When I bought mine during COVID, I had checked their consumption and somehow factored in that it was minimal. Then I received my electricity bill and noticed a 10% consumption raise... so using them makes energy and resources issues worse. + the filters must be changed, and I don't know that they can be recycled. :-(

The attitude:

"First we need to make sure that our economy is prosperous so that we can afford to fix the climate later!"

sounds rather like:

"First I need to prioritize getting rich over my health. Then I will fix all my health problems with money when I am in my 60s!"

@juergen_hubert except we might not make it to the 60s with this strategy 😱
