Grandma names were pretty great in the old days.

Saw a Mabel from @Shanitoba, and an Edna from @skatem and I had a Winifred.

Anyone have a classic grandma (or great-grandma) name?

chrisbegley,
@chrisbegley@mstdn.social avatar

@ottaross @Shanitoba @skatem my great grandparents were Augusta and Augustus

When writing alt history, I like playing with the wank/screw dichotomy in the genre (wank = country or faction gets stronger/richer/portrayed more positively; screw = the opposite). For example, let's say Germany unifies under a Großdeutsche Lösung, is forced to democratize in 1885, avoids starting two world wars and the Holocaust... but it's so economically dominated by Junkers that it ends up a lot like real-life Italy, with a huge low-productivity traditional sector.

chrisbegley,
@chrisbegley@mstdn.social avatar

@Alon wouldn't democratization have meant Bismarck, the ur-Junker was forced out by reformers though? I would see democratization driven by Frankfurt and the Hanseatic cities.

I have an alt history of what-if-the-US-stays-British; in the timeline, Zionism didn't do much, and the entire Levant is one Syrian state, ~5% Jewish.

Dear followers, please persuade me to write it up as a normal narrative and not as live updates (like @ww3real) by the Jewish-Syrian-British protag.

chrisbegley,
@chrisbegley@mstdn.social avatar

@Alon @Transportist @paninid @ww3real so in this, the railways jump up to the now Winnipeg, and then go in to gather all the wheat in the Prairies then proceed through the various passes?

This whole plan to sell off federal lands seems poorly thought out. Previous governments sold off everything not nailed down often meaning renting back building we used to own.. so we’re selling either garbage or needed buildings and waves hands housing https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/selling-federal-office-buildings-should-move-twice-as-fast-says-procurement-official-1.7182722

chrisbegley,

@Auxonic they do say they are planning the office footprint for 3 days in office weeks

chrisbegley,
@chrisbegley@mstdn.social avatar

@stephanie @Auxonic @dairpo we have our in-office days set for our entire team. No element of choice. I think this is more effective. Otherwise, as you say, you might as well be at home

chrisbegley,
@chrisbegley@mstdn.social avatar

@Auxonic @dairpo I do think they will need to figure out the Monday/Friday thing though. If we want true hybrid work environments, we cannot have 15% there on Monday and Friday and 90% on T-Th.

Today is World Autism Awareness Day and my work put out a little blurb about it in their weekly newsletter.

Normally that would be great, except for the entire frigging thing focused on the stereotypical shortcomings of autistic people, with no actual call-to-action for neurotypical people to accommodate autistic people or highlighting the spectrum.

chrisbegley,
@chrisbegley@mstdn.social avatar

@casseagull I find that never expecting anything more than the most shallow, performative gestures from senior management on these type of topics is the appropriate mindset

Tonight's is a rough version of , the Brazilian black bean and sausage stew.

Seems like a nice choice to result in some leftovers as well.

I have a habit of eating later when I'm immersed in work and don't stop for supper at a specific time. The only growling stomach is mine this week.

A somewhat hyper-local shopping topic…

as per toots a few wks ago about Guinness Zero availability and pricing, last time I was excited to see the hard-to-find brew in a Loblaws (grocery chain) for a pricey $17 (4pack). The LCBO (liquor store) sells it for $13, but can't keep it in stock.

This evening we stumbled across a big supply at Food Basics (grocery chain) where it's $10! Was shocked at the price. Grabbed a few packs at that price.

chrisbegley,
@chrisbegley@mstdn.social avatar

@ottaross one thing I have been doing is getting a can of normal and a can of 0.0 and mixing. I get two nice 2.1% drinks, tasting almost identical

@casseagull well, technically speaking it predates amalgamation by about 10 years.

On another PWHL note though, I met two PWHL Boston stars today! Lexie Adzija and Taylor Wenczcowski!

@casseagull Book review 2023! I read lots, but lots of it was Lee Child and a series called Ava Lee. Just escapism (but fun!!!).
Best book I read was Factory Girls, set in Northern Ireland 1994. Great read. Second was Nobody's Fool, which I liked because it was about working class men in a serious way.
Honourable mentions:
August Into Winter
The Sorcerer of Pyongyang
Everyone in my family has killed somebody
The Wall (Austrian)
The Ninja Daughter
The Private Apartments

4 Canadian NHL teams in the playoffs this year to bandwagon jump...my Leaf fan friends seem unconvinced this is their year, so I'm leaning towards one of the western teams. A brother-in-law is a big Winnipeg fan, and they have the best timezone of the 3. Another 10ish games to decide.

Gotta love the PR campaign to normalize illegal private DNA databases that destroy the privacy of anyone related to someone in there. Friends don’t let friends give their DNA to these companies (that are also hardly more than astrology as far as accuracy goes)

Hard to see on the radar, but the stinger low should have formed near Washington hours ago, and will slowly develop and move towards New York, before exiting to the Atlantic tomorrow afternoon. This feeds the much larger flow of the occluded low centered over Chicago, lofting Gulf Stream heat and sending it across Ontario, simultaneously pulling down cold air...a long lived snow factory.

chrisbegley,
@chrisbegley@mstdn.social avatar

@johnefrancis it is windy, cold rain/sleet in Boston right now, and for the last many hours
