This whole plan to sell off federal lands seems poorly thought out. Previous governments sold off everything not nailed down often meaning renting back building we used to own.. so we’re selling either garbage or needed buildings and waves hands housing https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/selling-federal-office-buildings-should-move-twice-as-fast-says-procurement-official-1.7182722

@stephanie @Auxonic @dairpo we have our in-office days set for our entire team. No element of choice. I think this is more effective. Otherwise, as you say, you might as well be at home

Gotta love the PR campaign to normalize illegal private DNA databases that destroy the privacy of anyone related to someone in there. Friends don’t let friends give their DNA to these companies (that are also hardly more than astrology as far as accuracy goes)

@ottaross my most controversial opinion is that he is the best PM of my lifetime:

  • Free Trade
  • GST
  • Acid Rain
  • Montreal Protocol
  • First to have powerful female ministers (Flora Macdonald, Kim Campbell)
  • Tried twice to fix PET's constitutional mess

The metric cup of 250ml (as used in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada) implies the existence of a metric pint of 500ml and a metric gallon of 4 liters, and all the other units derived from the gallon.

chrisbegley,
@chrisbegley@mstdn.social avatar

@pnorman @akrennmair I would say the "gallon" people are rarer and rarer. Beer is often sold in a pint (but since it has no legal meaning, you get between 440 - 500 mls!)

A somewhat hyper-local shopping topic…

as per toots a few wks ago about Guinness Zero availability and pricing, last time I was excited to see the hard-to-find brew in a Loblaws (grocery chain) for a pricey $17 (4pack). The LCBO (liquor store) sells it for $13, but can't keep it in stock.

This evening we stumbled across a big supply at Food Basics (grocery chain) where it's $10! Was shocked at the price. Grabbed a few packs at that price.

@ottaross one thing I have been doing is getting a can of normal and a can of 0.0 and mixing. I get two nice 2.1% drinks, tasting almost identical

Today is World Autism Awareness Day and my work put out a little blurb about it in their weekly newsletter.

Normally that would be great, except for the entire frigging thing focused on the stereotypical shortcomings of autistic people, with no actual call-to-action for neurotypical people to accommodate autistic people or highlighting the spectrum.

chrisbegley,
@chrisbegley@mstdn.social avatar

@casseagull I find that never expecting anything more than the most shallow, performative gestures from senior management on these type of topics is the appropriate mindset

@Auxonic @casseagull @lanastewart there is a scheme in Munich called ReCup which involves most places selling to-go coffee. You pay an extra euro and get a reusable cup which can be returned (for your euro) at any participating coffee shop. Since most do, it is very easy.
Part of the reason it works is that Germans are trained from a young age with this deposit system for the glass at beer gardens.

    People in this thread, like @martinvermeer, are comparing military spending now with the Cold War. However, one crucial difference is the scale of the adversary. In 1989, the total population of the Warsaw Pact countries was 401 million, while Euro-NATO ex-Turkey was 332 million. Today, Russia and Belarus combined are 154 million and Euro-NATO ex-Turkey but with Sweden is 512 million. 2% is a good goal for deterring Russia; what we need the most is force integration. https://mastodon.social/@anderspuck@krigskunst.social/111934500789518780

    chrisbegley,
    @chrisbegley@mstdn.social avatar

    @Alon I would argue the other key difference is the role of China, where the US has to maintain greater Indo-Pacific capabilities, so there can be less free-riding on Russia from EU/Canada

    @ottaross @BostonBibliophile I have read it. Funny, but the author's second (Playing the Moldovan at Tennis or something) is better imo.
    If you want a more serious tome Patrick Leigh Fermor's "A Time of Gifts", a memoir of his walk in 1933 from England to Constantinople, is excellent

    Hard to see on the radar, but the stinger low should have formed near Washington hours ago, and will slowly develop and move towards New York, before exiting to the Atlantic tomorrow afternoon. This feeds the much larger flow of the occluded low centered over Chicago, lofting Gulf Stream heat and sending it across Ontario, simultaneously pulling down cold air...a long lived snow factory.

    @chrisbegley@mstdn.social avatar
